Title: Buy or barter - Fireplace tools
Post by: MamaLiberty on October 09, 2010, 01:43:31 PM
If anyone goes to yard/garage sales, estate sales and the like, please keep your eyes open for a good set of fireplace tools with a stand. Nothing fancy, but better if nice and strong. Indoor wood basket or rack also a possibility.

Let me know what you find, the terms and we'll make a swap. :)

Also willing to buy or barter for firewood. Bags of pinecones very welcome!

Mom-umit saw an awesome set with wood holder at the big yard sale in Newcastle @ the Fairgrounds a couple weeks back and today was kicking herself for not getting it...FRN $5

You've got an expert in town to help with your search...just gotta get up early to join the fun  ;)

I get up around 3:30 to 4 AM, so I suspect that's early enough. LOL The problem is that I don't take a paper and don't know when/where these things are. I work on the weekend, for the most part, so I never think of it. I'll have to see if I can remember to drive around town and see what I can find. It will be easier to remember since I have something specific to look for. We'll see.

Super! Right now I'm using some old BBQ tools. I've already had some interesting experiences! LOL

Got a poker, scoop and bellows I'm bring with me that you can have, and I've generally got a couple of estra blacksmith tongs around if you want a pair of them to go with the rest. I'd suggest you consider keeping everything handy in a metral bucket rather than a wood or wicker container, just in case you need a hasty recepticle for ashes or coals. A two-gallon bucket works nicely, but a 5-gallon one is even more stable, and saves excess trips to dump ash.

I've also seen a pretty neat ash scoop made from a coffee can, that dumps into a bucket with a closed lid, into an extension made from a piece of stovepipe. That way most all of the ashes go into the bucket, and very little dust hits the air.

I'd love to have those tools and I'll see if I can find a bucket for them. Good idea. Right now my tools rest on the lid of the big cast iron dutch oven. The BBQ tools have actually done ok, but they are so light that I know they won't last long.

I'm using an old stock pot for ashes if I need to dump the drawer of the stove inside... but won't be doing that too often. These ashes are super fine and go everywhere, no matter what I scoop with. :) Works better just to take the ash drawer outside to dump... and I still get to wear some of it if I'm not really careful.

So... hoping to see you soon. :)
