I want to do some penetration tests by shooting through loaded magazines to see what kind of ballistic protection they offer. I feel bad about shooting good working magazines but that’s all I got. If anyone has magazines that have: dents, rust, broken pieces, bent feed lips, missing pieces, or are generally unserviceable I want them.
I have good working mags that I will otherwise shoot through as listed below:
AR-15 Aluminum GI 30 round, used to like new condition - I have some from the dark days of the ban that say for law enforcement and military only. I will be keeping those to shoot as a form of therapy.
HK-91 Aluminum 20 round, in like new condition
Possibly some AK-47 mags, new in package to like new condition
Please let me know if you have any similar unserviceable mags. I will trade you any one of the mags I have for a couple of broken mags that I can use in my test. I’m going to try and trade into some junk magazines at the gunshow this weekend so let me know if you are interested ASAP. Post or PM with what you’ve got and we’ll make a deal. You can either bring them to the next Sundance Shoot or the gunshow this weekend or we can arrange delivery by some other means.
My plan is to load some dummy rounds from steel case ammo. Filled with sand and capped with hot glue to simulate loaded ammo. So if you have any steel case 5.56 / 7.62x39 / 7.62x51 empties that you do not have a use for I am also interested.
Any ideas that may make this easier would be appreciated as well. If you are interest in testing a load send me a PM to get on the Sundance Shoot e-mail list.
So far the rounds to be tested for penetration include
.22 LR
.380 ACP
38 special
.357 magnum
9 mm
.40 S&W
.45 ACP
10 MM
.223
7.62x39
30-30
7.62x51
6.5x55
7.62x54

It started by me wanting to see how effective certain hangun calibers were against real targets in a hostile environment. But the idea that I will probably have a chest rig on myself made me question what it could hold up against. I will use berdan primed brass for the .308 mags but I don't want to ruin good brass so I decided to use steel case for the 5.56 and 7.62x39 dummy ammo. I don't think there will be much difference between the steel and brass for those rounds as it is so thin.
Someone suggested using coarse ground pepper instead of sand for the powder substitute. Great idea and I think I will roll with it. Keep em comin'
