Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone knows of a place that processes year round. I teach anatomy and my supplies are a little lacking. I know some suppliers (like Carolina, Flinn, etc) that I can get animal parts for dissection, but the thing that really bugs me is the smell. I hate the smell of the preservatives.
I got a few deer hearts that were fresh (grossed out my kids pumping water through it to get rid for the clotted blood). But they were big (sheep hearts are tiny!) and they didn't reek (only the faint smell of coppery blood).
So if anyone has any contacts for parts (kidneys, brains, etc) that I would be able to contact a week or two in advanced to pick them up, that'd be great! Of course, free would be best!

I'd be concerned about bacterial contamination from "fresh" organs. After spending many years in various laboratory situations, can't say I ever got used to the smell, but it seemed a necessary part of the preparation.

Well I don't see too much in the way of a biohazard from a fresh organ. The gloves, goggles, apron, etc universal precautions should take care of any hazard. Plus a good washdown of all dissection trays, tools, and surfaces helps. I'd take a strong scent of bleach any day over a faint wafting of the preservative smell.

Check with Wyoming Game and Fish. Might be your local redshirt can give you an assist with some roadkill or culls. http://gf.state.wy.us/web2011/home.aspx (http://gf.state.wy.us/web2011/home.aspx)

Thanks Archy! I hadn't thought about that. But I had thought about how certain organs are going to waste just sitting in fresh roadkill...
So have you gotten to the Wyoming side of things yet?

Not back there yet. I've got some legal matters to take care of first [witness, not defendant] hoping for March or so. Which should have most of the worst of this year's winter out of the way.

Due to federal regulations, I dont think any processors will be able to help you. A while back we took a beef and a goat to get butchered and I asked for the organs and fat as well as any trimmings to be ground up for dogfood. I also asked about getting these same parts from other people's animals if they didnt want them. The butcher told us that due to the laws they could'nt let us have them. On your own animals, you can have them, but they can't give away or sell the organs or scrap from someone else's animal. I forget the exact reasons, but eventhough it will just get tossed they cant let someone have it.
We have a little horse that we need to put down if you are still interested. We also butcher every year and can hook you up then.

Well a few parts here and there would be nice, a whole cadaver might be a bit much.
And as for Bar Bar 2's offer, I think we're getting close to being done for this year. Maybe next year as we get closer to cutting up certain parts I'd get in contact with you.
Thanks for the input though!
