Title: Greeting from the Socialist State of ILL
Post by: FlyingDevildog on January 17, 2007, 09:13:05 AM
Hello.
I have been following this groups progress for sometime, just not here.
It's was at TCF. And I like how it has grown. Well, a little about me.
I'm 46, married with 4 kids, girl and 3 boys. We home school, and my wife is the Teacher. I'm a Mechanic by trade, working right now for a Gov. org. on there machines.
I'm also a Lic. A&P mechanic (airplane), would also like to get my private pilots Lic. am also looking at studying to be a gunsmith too. I am currently in IL, the land of the oppressed and home of the unfree.
I have looked around and see that there is not of lot of info. On Niobrara Co,  or on Lusk, Wy. Is there something wrong or something going on in this Co. that I am missing?  I have read about the Boom and Bust times, What would y'all say is a goal for income in the Bust times?

Thank you
Devildog

Welcome! Wonderful to have another family, especially homeschoolers!

As far as I know, Lusk is pretty bleak and barren, but land is cheap there. I'm sure someone else here will tell you more about it soon. I'd advise you to come look for yourself as soon as you can. There is a lot going on in Wyoming right now, and lots of opportunity for anyone willing to work.

Let me know if you come to Weston County. FSW folks are always welcome to drop in and visit. Just PM when you know your plans. MamaLiberty

I believe Niobrara is the only county in Wyoming that is losing population, so you should be able to find homes pretty cheap there.  :) I drove through Lusk and found it a decent little town. The thing about it is, you are out there, on the prairie, sorta like being out in the middle of a green ocean. Might get to some people...

The county is usually characterized as "bleak", etc. but I have seen some ranches for sale that look pretty nice actually, if you can find some down in the draws or with a few hills and trees nearby. And the price looked right too. I wouldn't write it off without a look or two.

Heck, Gillette is out in the middle of that green ocean, too, and lots of people live there. Of course there are jobs too, which may matter to you.  :)

Welcome to our group!

Having grew up in Kansas and finding myself here in Chicagoland, Green Ocean sounds might nice.

I also under stand about the job thing. That why I ask the ?  what  would be the least amount of money needed to live out there?

besides being a good mech. I'm also looking at raising Alpacas and rabbits and ??   And I'm not to bad in the graden too.

But you need to be making close to $55,000 here to just make ends meet. let alone get ahead.

Driving through Lusk a couple times, I'd say it is a cute little town.  Had dinner at one of the restaurants.  My main concern would be that it seems to be "equally far from everywhere"! ;)

My dad's in IL too - I'm trying to get him out of there. :)

Howdy Flying Devildog, welcome aboard.   I don't know much about the lusk area, I spent most of my time in the western half of Wyoming.   As far as boom and bust.  I think there are a lot of folks who travel around following the booms. During these times there is generally a lot of construction type work, large capital investments in manufacturing and utility sorts of workplaces. Once things are built things slow down again and the construction workers move to the next big job. The housing takes a little bit longer to catch up so this type of work stays a little longer.   So at the end of the boom cycle there are actually still a lot of jobs, it all depends on what you do for a living. For example , the coal mines will probobly be around for a long time, the railroad, gas companies, hospitals, etc etc. If you can get a job at one of these places the "bust" probobly won't effect you as much.  If you are a business person and have your own business, all the better.
Housing all depends on what you buy, how you want to live. You can buy a piece of land for cash, put a trailer on it and pay cash and not have a monthly payment or you can buy a 500,000 dollar home and pay each month. I would bet that groceries and other things are about the same anywhere, at least not to much different. So what I'm trying to say is that the amount you will need to live in Wyoming will all depend on how you choose to live. How much money do you spend each month VS how much you have coming in.  Hope that helps?    Miles

Hello from another noobie. I've been in Gillette since June and from what I gather from people I talk to I don't think that a mechanic would have a hard time makeing a living during the bust. The mines and the support companys  keep going even when oil and gas drop off.And from what I've been told the demand for Wy. coal keeps going up because of enviromental regs. A lot of eastern power plants can't burn coal from other places because of the sulphur content.
