Thanks Biathlon. I plan on being there by spring 2009, earlier if i can afford it. Need to get the house built so i have a roof over my head. See ya'll soon. Probably won't make the jam :( but, look forward to meeting everyone soon.

Welcome to CS,
Got property already? Way to go.....
Regards, Danl ~W~

Yeah found it online throught Rocky mountain timberlands. Not too bad on the price either.

Welcome Shooter!
You found land online? Unseen? Swampland? Ha, ha!
Glad you're coming up this way. Let us know if you're ever in the state for a visit.

Say, since you are a Virginian, get yourself a copy of Owen Wister's The Virginian (http://www.kirjasto.sci.fi/owister.htm) which is THE prototypical western novel, set in Wyoming. That should get the juices flowing... :)
-
Can someone tell me if I should notice a change on my profile, or anything when I send in my SOI and FRN? I sent it over a week ago but see no change as of yet.
-
Howdy colonial shooter, Sometimes it takes a while for Boston to get to and sort through all of his fan mail. ;D but be assured he is working on it and your profile will change according to your situation. When are you going to get out to see your land ? Miles
-
I won't be able to physically get there til next summer, however i am trying to get a lot of things taken care of prior to my visit. Hopefully I will have photos and GPS coordinates, soon. I want to have the house built before I get there which is spring of 2009, full time.

Hey Colonial
Another Virginian & NRA lifer here... and still here in VA... I've drooled over some internet photos of land too & would like to know how your deal worked out. (Pros / cons etc...)
-
Couldn't beat the deal 35+ acres= 16,000/ 180frn monthly. Rocky Mountain Timberlands. A little remote but I like that. I am looking forward to moving I am getting the ball rolling looking for work, etc.
-
Good grief! Sounds like a deal - no neighbors and plenty of room to blast critters for breakfast. I could sell my 4 acres here and clear enough for a similar sized lot. Sent you a reply PM.

Folks, be very careful about buying land sight unseen. Especially, worry about the water situation. There are many places in Wyoming that have water so mineral-laden that it cannot be used for much at all; in that case you'd be getting a truckload of water from town once a week. Doable, but not the best setup.
Also consider living in a small Wyoming town. There is an awful lot to recommend it. Lots of nice folks around.
Just a thought. Don't wanna throw a wet towel over your ideas (more than I already have). ;) I too have thought of buying some "waste" land and putting up a basic home and seeing if I could make a go of it. Lots to recommend with that as well, especially if no wife is involved. :D
-
No, Paul, I wouldn't say that's a wet towel, just a dose of truth. Doing the 'way out in the boonies thing' is only for hearty souls with lots of sand and practical skills. Just living the way we do now (burning self cut/split wood for heat) takes a lot of time. Pile on remodeling and building on by myself or with a helper now and then. + Fence line repair. Whew.
If your not used to being very alone, living out in the distant sticks would be an issue. Take my word for it, doing construction work by yourself is really time consuming and patience testing.
Living in or near a small town would have some real advantages in some types of SHTF scenarios as well as just being pleasant to be around folks from time to time. If I were to do that, having a 'retreat' up in the hills would be sorta fun. Your own special campground for solitude or inviting the gang up for a good time.
-
Those were pretty much my questions to ask: water, mineral rights, etc etc. but don't want to hijack his thread.
*l* Construction!? You mean Home Depot won't come out and do it? ;D Yikes!
My part-time job "office" is a retired phone company van w/ a ladder rack on top & a hardware store inside. (But I get your drift - more than once I've had to figure out how to get an unwieldy piece of lumber in place with no extra hands.)!

lunghd,
It is interesting, the prepositioning and 3rd arm techniques we come up with for a one-man show!?! That's why I hire inexpensive 'day' labor from time to time to be a 3rd arm. Even if they are idle more than I like, a second person keeps things moving...
Thus, the folks that did 'barnraisings' in remote areas with large groups of people were quite smart. I participated in a 'church in a day' project last year. 30 x 80. With slab foundation laid, all walls laid out, trusses and all materials on hand, a very large group started at 6AM Saturday, we were roofing by noon, inspected by 6pm. Had church Sunday morning. All that was left was baseboard (not on materials list) and exterior landscape. Considerable planning for materials and people made this possible. -All power for compressors and power tools was supplied by several gensets...
This is an example of what could be done in Wyoming amongst friends. Cash, PIK or barter services for skilled trades as necessary. Excellent technique for remote locales, such as Colonial Shooters spot.

bobcat - Yup. I'd be all over the barter system. Anything to help lower my bloodpressure over the amount of book-keeping required for a hobby that wants to be a business. Yah - day labor can be helpful it's just finding one that's sober or out of jail the one day in a month I need him! ::) Any other day I can find thirty people who want me to pay them $100 to hang a picture... $100 to help carry drywall in? *ahem* "got bail?"
Impressive time on that church raising... I'd still be unloading my van. ;D
Shooter - Thank you for the info. Got the URL and that's some pretty property you've bought into. Some trees & hills to help make the transition but wow - some long distance views too!

Fortunately, I have a short list of some friends that enjoy doing the work on a very part time basis. I also help them from time to time in that regard. Fortunately, none of us have any problems staying sober and out of the cooler. We have too much to do to even contemplate stepping in that direction. Those relationships will be hard to leave behind. On the other hand, I look forward to striking up those kinds of relationships in WY/MT.

You and me both. ;) First time someone told me about such a thing, I thought, no possible way. The first one I went to was as much curiosity as desire to help. Make no mistake, there were A LOT of folks doing A LOT of preplanning and prepositioning of 'stuff' to pull this off. I am still in awe of someone even THINKING it could be pulled off. My hat is off to them.

I'm sure there will be a call for mobile hammerheads if only 1% of the people here actually make a move to WY. Shouldn't be hard to establish a new network just from people on this forum & those they have direct experience with. Distance between people would be the tough thing but not insurmountable given the common goals many here have. That's another thread I guess - sorry to hijack!
-
That is one of the Forum's primary goals... to serve as a conduit to help establish those networks. ;) Getting people together in real life and to Wyoming is the mission. All the debate that goes on and the news items that get posted are just icing on the cake.

Thanks for repeating that J, I for one am grateful for the reminder, as that was my reasoning for joining up. All too easy to get lost in the 'interesting' conversation. Speaking for myself, the forum is working, as I have found several folks with similar interests and life skill sets. Now, I just need to get these FSW monikers coupled with faces and more 'normal' names. Easier to remember 'who' your conversing with. See you at the Jam. ~W~
Clemac, thanks for the 'approval' ;) I was pretty 'cheesed' when I read about it, especially when I got to the part about how everybody took cover for the sake of 'total protection' and comments about how the cops 'took charge'- atfter the fact of course. At least these cops appeared to be rushing into harms way to take the perp(s) out? Should have expected as much from CNN (Communist News Network) as they are co-conspirators in victimology. >:(
Ehhh, gotta get back to work. :) ~W~

colonial shooter, welcome here, and thanks for coming aboard.
I'll be handling FSW biz all this week, your SofI included, as I'm
sure it's arrived by now. I'll upgrade you, and PM you then.
Congrats on your Wyoming land purchase!

Thanks Boston and everyone else here. I have a question about cellular service. I am told that there is adequate service on the remote home site. But who can tell me the company with the best reception and service in the area of Medicine Bow?I currently have Sprint but could change if another is better.
