Title: Greetings, friends
Post by: MutableDruthers on August 03, 2007, 09:13:19 AM
I've been lurking here for a little bit and I figured it was about time to say hello. I'm not sure if Wyoming is in my future, but I'm certainly an interested party. It would be quite a shift for me were I to make the move, as I currently live in a small suburb five miles outside Philadelphia with my parents while I work to get my English writing degree at the University of Pittsburgh. I look forward to getting to know all of you.

Pittsburgh winters are no cakewalk, either. Not much now accumulation, it's just constantly below freezing. All I know for sure is that I need to get out of Southeastern Pennsy. I figure either Wyoming or the Wyoming Valley for which the state is named is in my future. I love Pennsylvania to death but things are really starting to get out of hand here. Although this won't be a pressing concern for a long time, I couldn't see myself starting a family here. I want my kids to be able to roam by themselves a little bit, something I was never allowed to do. It's just too dangerous around here. My main concern is: what the heck is BA in writing good for in Wyoming?

Freelancing, maybe.  Or a novel.

Howdy MutableD. , welcome here,  My older brother had a degree in P.E. /coaching. and ended up being a pretty big shot at a Wyoming energy company.  If you are willing to work and learn I think any degree will be worth while.  Miles

You're probably going to be working in some other line, at least for a while. But that's a known part of the writer's trade, isn't it?

Despite the reputation of people in Wyoming, we actually do read here.  ;)

Teaching.  There are jobs as private tutors everywhere.  There are jobs teaching in private schools.  I would suppose that public universities and public colleges might have jobs for people who can write.  You typically have to have a master's degree or higher to teach in a publicly funded university or college, but they have other sorts of jobs.  I would urge you to stay away from public schools, but they do employ people who can write.

Writing.  You might look at newspapers.  There are also jobs writing for companies.  Someone has to write press releases.  Someone has to write ad copy.

Driving a taxi.  It is what most people with degrees in writing do, I gather.  8)

What's a taxi?

A taxi is what a taxidermist uses to prepare an animal skin.
