Greetings good folks and freedom lovers!
I have been thinking about moving to Wyoming from North carolina for years now, on account of the likelihood of finding like-minded people; and with the potential descent of the US into a totalitarian police state, I always figured on WY being the last free spot on earth. More recently I heard of the Free State Project, and afterward, the Wyoming Free State Project. I think what you outstanding patriots are doing here is great for our nation, and for our individual liberties.
I am a self employed tech worker. I never met a computer or network that I couldn't fix or build. I only recently became self employed in an effort to attain self determination. As it stands, I am moving very slowly and subsisting from client to client with ramen noodles and just enough to keep parts materials and gas to keep working.
I would have long ago signed up for FSW if not for the reservations I have concerning whether or not I will be able to make a living in Wyoming. I do not want to live on the charity of others, but make my own living, and I am concerned about the marketplace for techs in rural Wyoming. Any feedback you kind people can give me in this area will be most welcome.
I have been strongly libertarian minded long before I had even heard the word "libertarian." I do not remember an awakening to the concept of liberty, because I have felt the way I do now from my earliest memories. I have always felt that there was something wrong with other people who seem to reject the concept of freedom as dangerous, or worse - lunatic.
I am 34 years old, born 11 Sept 1973. I am a former US Marine Intelligence analyst. USMC Rifle Expert, current RWVW/Appleseed Rifleman. I can hit a pie plate on iron sights from an AR-15 at 500 yards about 85% of the time from prone or sitting unsupported, and I a track record of success training completely unskilled shooters on iron sights to hit a 21" target at 500 yards into the 80%+ range.
I am a computer and network expert. I am most familiar with the Mac OS and Unix platforms, but have made a significant living in times past with all MS and Windows modalities. I would still be making i the $65k/annum range if not for the fact that most of what I do has been offshored. I decided to become self-employed after increasing required skills and decreasing wages sunk me to $25k/annum despite doing the jobs of people who used to make more than 4 times that salary. I am now self employed, and scratching out an impoverished living at between $10k and $12k a year. I no longer have any savings, and the remaining equity in my home is approaching zero.
I want to join the FSW project, I really do. I have remained in North Carolina because tech is supposed to be a good market here. I am thus far not having a great deal of success at going it alone here where the market is supposed to be good, which is why I am very concerned about trying to move to WY where I have no idea what the tech market looks like. I am at least surviving here -- the last thing I want to do is to pull up stakes and move to WY only to very shortly go homeless (on account of having no savings whatsoever to survive on until I am able to make it work).
I could talk for hours on this and other subjects regarding liberty and how America is losing her freedom, but I had best cut it short for now. I am sure there will be plenty of opportunities to discuss this in the future.

Not a lot of high tech in Wyoming. However if you have a work ethic and can fix stuff, you should have no problem getting work here. However you might have a problem finding housing! This assumes you are working in the energy business. It is conceivable to find a home in the SW corner of Crook Co (thus being in with the largest FSW crowd) and drive to work in Gillette. At least a way to get your foot in the door...
You might find work installing satellite or cable or internet, that sort of thing. Otherwise you might be going far afield. That shouldn't matter; "Specialization is for insects" as Heinlein put it.
Go look at our jobs board, should find some leads there or some resources to get you in touch with the jobs.

I just did a quick search, without registering or logging in, and it looks like there are several IT type jobs. I usually tell folks to find a way to get to Wyomimg and spend a week or two knocking on doors and you will find work. You may have to take a job that is not quite right just to get started. But that will give you a chance to look around and make a living untill you find the right fit. There are a lot of large industrial sites in Wyoming and all will have IT departments. There are several colleges which have IT too. Might be able to contract your sevices out also. We are starting to build a good network of fine folks in the state who continue to offer help to newcomers and visitors so do not hesitate to ask for help here.

Welcome! Set your sights on freedom and make up your mind to do whatever it takes to reach that. If you insist on finding exactly the work you want, or the same as you had, you will not see the opportunities that actually exist.
I know all too well... been there and done that. :) I finally woke up and just moved. It's all working out.

One of the potential outcomes of the Lightspeed Systems public offering is more than one store location in, e.g., Wyoming, where we would employ people to fix computers and install systems/networks for business customers. More when I know something.

Welcome aboard Gunny. There IS work in WY, but like Paul said it may be far afield from where you currently are. Glad to see another independent type patriot join the ranks. You'll certainly find several like minded folks here.

Welcome to the forum and to a whole big group of freeom minded people.
I live up in Crook County. Just had my Wild Blue satellite Internet installed by a guy from Colorado. He covers 4 states!
The thing to remember about WY is the low cost of living. You can get by with nearly any job. If you have a pulse you can get a job around here. No exaggeration. It probably won't be in high tech, but there are lots of jobs for young men around here. At lunch time all I see in the local restaurants and fast food places are young men driving a truck, a big rig, a service truck, a panel van, some kind of service related job. Not nearly so much opportunity for women, at least for those who wish to stay in their "traditional" roles rather than working at the mines!
Good luck and good to hear there are people like you out there, whether in Wyoming or not (yet).

Get up to Northern Virginia NOW!
You are needed, especially since you have *nix AND Windoh's skills. If you are weak in one or the other, brush up on it. If you can run both servers, your skills are in demand. For example, my brother in law has been looking for a senior level programmer with Windoh's and Unix skills for two years! The problem is everyone chooses one or the other.
You WILL make money here. I wouldn't work for anything less than $70-75k here TO START. If you generally qualify as "senior", figure on at least $80k+. Some companies pay more than others; Amazon offered my buddy (a senior Linux SA) $105k + $20k sign-on bonus + bonuses. If you have host + network skills, you'll be doing really well.
Virginia is very pro-gun, btw. It's home of VCDL (vcdl.org) and we hammer the state legislature every time they get rowdy.
