It's about time I introduced myself! Ive been lurking for a good while and seeing Viking's post and how his situation and opinions mirror mine I decided it was past time to register and put myself out there. Ive been in 8 yrs as of now and am a PO1 (E6), with a little less than 2 yrs to go. Ive done 6 yrs in San Diego and will do 4 yrs in Virginia Beach. I took my "red pill" last summer while in Africa and have been coming out of my shell more and more since then. As far as the Navy is concerned it's just not the same for me anymore, as I do not believe in what I am doing. I'm in the top % advancement wise, so it sure is a secure job, but those who trade liberty for security...well you know. My original plan was to do 20 then retire to a paid off homestead in one of the free states. But that doesn't seem feasible anymore, especially with events of the past week. While already half way there I see it as in a sense "wasting" those 10 years. I was looking at MT or ID at first, but the job situation and the FSW put WY over the top for me. Im a bit surprised by my transformation from a man who toed the party line so fervently to one who wishes to be dependent on no one but myself and embraces libertarian ideals. I can not lead people to a goal or values that I do not agree with and it sickens me that I am a de facto "agent" of a govt that I dislike so much.
Well that's what brought me here so here's a little bit more about myself. My main experience is in weapons/ordnance/security and right now in fact I am instructing on major caliber gun systems (MK45, MK75, MK38). I don't really have any marketable quantifiable skills, although I am about to get an Associates in Electrical Engineering, and have Journeyman opportunities in the same field as the gun systems I work on are filled with electro-hydraulic and mechanics. The big thing that has kept me in is the question of what I would do when I got out. Between TA while I am still in and the GI Bill when I get out I can amass a quite immense arsenal of skills. Well I am now confident in my ability and desire to do ANYTHING. Trucking, railroad work, energy, construction, I'm excited at the prospect of doing something I may have never done before, in such an atmosphere as the Free State of Wyoming!

Welcome from one Sailor to another.

Howdy GMZ, In my experience of working in several Wyoming industries, they love to hire ex military folks. So follow your heart and get to Wyoming when you can.
-
Welcome GMZ!
Congratulations on "comming out".
Have you visited WY yet?
-
Thank you all for the welcome! No I have not visited yet, but its on the short list. Ill be on leave in a couple weeks and am thinking about taking some time and going for a quick recon if I can peel away from the folks for a bit. This is a very sudden development, as I had planned to do 20 then retire, but this year has just opened my eyes to so much around me in a big way. Im in good shape as Im on my shore tour with no deployments until my time is up so I will be able to properly prepare for the transition. Just hope there are still some jobs by the time I get there! I ordered a second copy of Molon Labe (my first grew legs when I was in Djibouti) and am re-reading it now with a much keener interest.

Welcome aboard...GMZ,
Nice to be amongst like minded sailors (at least on the net)...no oceans for 100s of miles in WY! You'll miss the MK 45 5" though...
Are you a DDG or a CG sailor?

I am former Navy, my Dad was Army (Korea), one son is NY National Guard, another is going Coast Guard. NY just turned down my application to buy a hunting rifle, due to a forgotten parking ticket. I guess they will soon want my other ones. Am a firefighter, and need to be free of unreasonable restrictions. Would love to come out with the solar powered self contained camper for a bit and check things out. I'm a former IT engineer, and have been off grid for 5 years, teacing others how to build wind turbines, and install solar off grid power systems. Need very rural with mountain views. Any one willing to play host? Just need a place to park the camper.

Anyone bother to tell you how that, in any sane world, precludes you from owning a firearm?
I left NY in 1992 because of this ludicrous behavior. Unfortunately I went to GA instead of WY. Now I have to relocate again.

Howdy Solar Steve I can't wait to hear more about your experience with wind turbines and solar! When I get a little time, I would love to build a wind turbine.
If you park your rig on public land you can stay in one place for up to 14 days (unless that has changed recently?) So if you do not get an offer to host your stay ,don't let that stop ya from visiting Wyoming.

Thanks for posting here, GMZ and Solar Steve, and welcome to the FSW!
Come out to visit when you can!

Solar Steve, there is always room for FSW folks to camp out here at my place in Newcastle. Just PM for directions or to chat any time. :)

Yowzaz been gone a while!
Viking, I was on a couple gators and the JPJ which is a DDG all out of San Diego, cant say I miss the ship life anymore! Theres no way Id go to a ship out here in Norfolk(and they want to send me), I would rather re-up in the Army. By the time my shore tour is up I will have 6 months until my EAOS, Im worried they might try and stick me on a ship anyway and I would love that time on shore to take care of business.
The more I think about getting out and moving somewhere nice and stable I realize I want to do so many things but cant because Im always moving around, so Im just contented myself to sit tight until I am able to do so. I cant even have a garden because I move at least once a year. I was thinking of taking a trip out West in the spring to go to a pistol/carbine class and swinging up on through.
