Just doing the normal relocation due diligence research and found these two maps rather alarming. 1) Nuclear Weapon Target Map for Wyoming (FEMA-196/September 1990). 2) Continental US Fallout Pattern for Prevailing Winds.
Anyone with knowledge on the subject please feel free to respond as I am currently vetting locations throughout the Western U.S. for my final retreat. Thanks!

Of course it is!
You can't generate power with out the coal.
Besides, if you get the coal burning .........

The target map from the 90's is probably due to the ring of nuke's we had in SD. One about a mile from the WY border on I-90. But they have since been removed and the silos filled in. Ellswothy AFB would probably still be a target but it is about 50 miles or more east of the Wyoming border. With the Silos gone that may have changed the fallout picture too. Look at the SD map to see why crook county has a little red on it. http://www.ki4u.com/nuclearsurvival/states/sd.htm (http://www.ki4u.com/nuclearsurvival/states/sd.htm)

B.T. thanks for your help, I certainly do appreciate it.
I realize when you say this, "With the Silos gone that may have changed the fallout picture too.", you refer to the fallout from the now defunct fields you are describing in SD and I agree. In addition to a direct attack, I'm concerned about being down wind of an attack on such a large target such as MT's fields. Would you have any knowledge of Montana's fields?

I have none. The only reason I know about the stuff around the Black Hills is that I grew up, and am still living there.

Was stationed at Ellsworth and deactivated the missile wing. I hated to do it and move. But now I am also sitting on a big bullseye in Cheyenne!
I can't get into specific targeting etc, but Teapot Dome and the coal mines are targets of course. Depending on the winds will determine any possible fallout. Remember that Malmstrom AFB is a huge target as well.

Thanks for your input folks. I really appreciate your help.

Buffalo Bill dam at Cody is a likely target... Without it, most of the area reverts back to sagebrush and prickly pear.
-
Then I guess I better build a basement when I move. 8) With poured concrete walls and roof. and an air filtration system. I have been accused of having a bunker mentality from time to time.

Billings - Refinery & Airport
Cheyenne - Refinery
Evanston - Refinery
Evansville - Refinery
Newcastle - Refinery
Sinclair - Refinery
Casper - Airport
Cody - Reservoir & irrigation
Lots of potential ground zero... All depends on who throws what.

Green River , UP railroad mainline and I-80 running through a smallish canyon. That would mess up transport for a while. The Green River itself also has a couple of good sized dams that would cause a real mess downstream if hit.

I'll preface my remarks by pointing out that I have no expertise in this area whatsoever....
I tend to look at this topic from the standpoint of allocation of scarce resources. So, unless the nuke-throwers have unlimited resources, I'm inclined to think they'll be looking for the greatest return on investment. I realize there may be a few key targets in Wyoming (e.g. military bases). Aside from those, however, I can't see why they would allocate scarce resources (expensive b0mbs) to a state with a total population that is lower than many U.S. cities, and is mostly wide open spaces.
Just my 2 cents...

Well... ain't none of "experts". :)
There was a study done some years ago, looking at what a limited strike... hittting our industrial base would do. They study calculated that, 80 warheads could easily wipe out 70% of America's refining capacity. The resulting trickle-down effect to transportation, agriculture, plastics, medicine, etc., etc., would throw us back to a pre-depression era economy that would persist for generations.

And I guess I look at this topic like I look at the Yellowstone caldera topic. If someone decides to start lobbing nukes or if Yellowstone blows I am not so sure it really matters where you are. So I might as well die happy , in the wild west.

I'm 100% in agreement with you.
The only Americans who are certain to survive are the politicians, who will be playing ping-pong and drinking cocktails in deep bunkers that you and me paid for but aren't allowed to get near.
I ain't so sure I want to survive just so I can haul Bush's garbage or pull Clinton's rickshaw.

Don't forget that with a single targeted airburst, the EMP will knock out all those electronics that are not EMP protected, and everyone goes back to the stone age per se.
