Title: Moving to WY: Best Area based on the following?
Post by: ejalfree on April 12, 2009, 11:32:22 AM
The wife and I are considering moving to WY. We're close to retirement age and fairly well off financially, so employment is not an important consideration for us. What we would like is at least 40 acres of land in a beautiful area. Not to insult those farming or that have different tastes than us, we don't consider flat plains as far as the eye can see to be our taste. We'd like a close up view of some big-ass mountains. The kind of views where your jaw drops every time you open your front door! At the same time, we don't want to be too far from 'civilization'. No more than 60 minutes or so from an airport with commercial flights, hopefully no more than 20 minutes away from a town with at least 5,000 with the basics like a supermarket, hardware store and hopefully a couple of restaurants. Having some water around would be nice too, but we realize we probably won't get everything we want. Any specific suggestions would be much appreciated.

It seems to me that you would probably like to have a look at Sundance and Newcastle.

Thanks RHodges... did a quick search for Sundance and you're right, there did seem to be some pretty acreage there but it all seemed to be around 5K an acre which seems a bit pricey. I'll continue looking in the area. Appreciate the tip....

Welcome aboard ejalfree.   Your discription, "some big-ass mountains" describes Buffalo or maybe Sheridan.  For the big airport it will be Billings.  Sheridan is a little bigger town but you go the little villages on Hwy 14 going across the mountain and still be close to Sheridan.  The only problem I see is that I will be extremely jealous and constantly dealing with the 10th commandment.  "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors wife view ::)

Hey ejalfree!  You might look towards Lander or Cody.  The finest "bigass" mountains are over near Jackson Hole.....those folks have a different agenda though.

Hi Judith,

Checked out the Pavillion area (within 20 miles of it) on realtor.com and only 5 tracts of (no disrespect intended to the locals) butt-ugly (to continue the metaphor) land of over 20 acres turned up on the search. Please keep those suggestions coming! Thanks.

Howdy ejalfree,  Pull up a Wyoming map and look at the areas with mountains . Then do a search for land in the towns close to them.
For instance you will see a lot of mountains along the western border , the Tetons , the Wyoming and the Windrivers. Then as you move east you have the Bighorns, the Black Hills , which in my mind are not big but very nice, and in the south you will see the Laramie, the Medicine Bow, in two groups , and finally the Sierra Madre. There are the Uinta in the south west corner also but they sit on the border so the view is nice but you are not really in the mountains.
Each of these areas may do, it all depends on your desires and cash on hand. Many places in Wyoming are butt ugly when you first see them but after you spend time in those areas they become more beautiful.
