I am thinking a little about moving to cheyene Wyo. The wife does not like rural life and I have a business that involves travel so I have to be near a large airport like Denvers.
Wikipedia says only 50,000 people but it's really the edge of the denver, fort collins mega city. It's Wyoming's seat of government so full of liberal government workers? I am asking?
The wife manages/owns rental properties, is this town big enough for that kind of business?
I would not work in wyoming and so all my earnings would be in a sense exports, new money into wyoming.
-
Sounds like a good compromise for you folks. I wouldn't live anywhere near Cheyenne, let alone Denver, but that's my choice. Getting here is probably the main thing. Then as time goes by, or the situation changes, you can always decide to find a different place.
Good luck, and welcome!
-
thanks mama.
I did a little research on wyoming. IT's a rural state but 50% of the people live in the 13 biggest cities. I imagine the population growth is in these cities. If you want state wide freedom minded/conservative people then those people should be also moving to your cities/towns. You don't have to be a farmer to be free.

Hi haole. Casper is about the same size as Cheyenne (though without a big college town right next door), central in the state so closer to most of the other FSWers, less liberal, growing, and I'll bet there is a fairly good connection service to Denver, and probably Salt Lake. It might be worth taking a look at, but it is a few hours further from the "mega city". Lots of us consider that a good thing, but YMMV. If it has to be Cheyenne or nothing, at least that is still on the right side of the border.

Funny thing is that I don't know of a single FSW person who is a true "farmer." :) Many have a garden or raise small livestock, but most have other, ordinary jobs and professions. Many of us have lived in big cities, or near them, and never want to do so again. Some of us ARE city folk, and enjoy the bigger towns very much. There are all sorts of people, and all kinds of living options here in Wyoming. Rural living isn't for everyone, for sure, but I hope you will at least visit us out here in the boonies. You may have some surprises! LOL

I lived in Cheyenne for about a dozen years... moving back 'home' to NW Wyoming close to ten years ago.
My impression of Cheyenne after living there for 12 years.
Good points:
1. Excellent medical care.
2. Decent shopping (short drive to Fort Collins).
3. I don't travel by air myself... but Cheyenne has a small airport and the Denver airport is a reasonable commute.
4. Intersection of 2 major interstates.
5. Couple hour drive from reasonably good fishing and hunting spots.
Crappy things:
1. Too close to Colorado. Coloradans flock to Wyoming on summer weekends and hog all the recreational locations.
2. Weather sucks. Hot and windy in summer... cold and windy in winter... just plain windy in fall and spring.
3. FE Warren AFB is one of last missile installations... so in event of war, Cheyenne will be a glowing cinder.
4. Most residents work for state, local and federal government. Not much for decent paying private-sector employment.
5. No character... Looks like any other vinyl village. Huge houses plopped down on barren, dusty, 5-acre plots.
It isn't the worst place to live... That's the best recommendation I can give.
-
Cheyenne tends to be looked down on in Wyoming, much like any seat of government. ;D
I don't think it's that bad, but I don't live there. Everything is relative; it might look like heaven compared to most cities (if you can tolerate the wind).
Wyoming is neither a rural state nor an urban state. It's a small-town state. No big cities, and the land is not good enough to support a large population.
-
Is Larmie better? It's a college town so it's goo for the rental business.
-
Laramie is a college town. Quite liberal as you can expect. Very windy and cold in winter. 45 miles from Cheyenne. Good fishing in the Snowy range. As a whole southern Wyo is quite windy and to close to Colorado Greenies. Lived in Cheyenne for 13 yrs. Do not want to go back.
-
A lot of speculators over built the rentals here in Laramie and now we have a significant empty market. Part of that is because Wyo Tech built their own dorms 3 years ago. The fishing and hunting is superb. We have a superb rifle range. We had our first snowfall this week and the skiing is also great. ;)

Way I see it, you can also bring people to hunt/fish/sample the goods of a freer life. Then "infect" them with the "freedom bug" so that even in their shithole socialist homestates/hometowns, they can act for more freedom, rather than less.
Of course I'm biased in that respect, but that is an idea.
-
Exactly. Cheyenne is not my cup of tea, but its a hell of a lot better than where a lot of people live and have to put up with. Some may just have a fine fit in Cheyenne, my son loves it there. Some may use it for an interum jump off spot for other places in Wyoming that suit them better. My frame of reference comes from having lived in several places in Wyoming and my comparisons to Cheyenne are tainted. Those who have never been here have no experience of this kind. As I have stated, Cheyenne is probably a whopping better place than the shitholes others live in in comparison.
-
I like the fact that many people are happy to live in Cheyenne... Keeps 'em from moving up this way. :)

Are the Colorado residents in the Cheyenne area really greenies? I can understand keeping the outdoors, clean & decent, good fuel economy, and reusing not refusing stuff, but come on. How bad are they? I'm from urbana, IL
>:(

Does anybody know from cheap to expensive rating the cost of rentals in: Cheyenne, Laramie, & Jasper
Does anybody know the prevalence of bleeding heart liberals from few to many in: Cheyenne, Laramie, & Jasper?
Does anybody know the availability of Surgical Tech jobs (hospitals, outpatient, or surgery centers) from few to many in: Cheyenne, Laramie, & Jasper?
Any help would be appreciated alot.

The problem wiht most greenies is not how they live.
The issues is that they want to force everyone else to do as they do, and have no problem using government power to make it happen. At gun point if needed.
It's not about the enviroment, it's about freedom.

Interestingly enough, plenty (maybe even most) of native born wyominites have this exact same problem!!
-
Colorado greenies means the color of their license plates not their environmental leanings. I don't know of any town called Jasper in Wyo. There is a town of about 60,000 called Casper in the center of the State ??? ??? ;)
UMMmm...........I don't think I'm confused. But only by those who know me. :-\ :-\
-
If there are too many "bleeding heart liberals" in Wyoming for you, even in Cheyenne, there's no hope for you. :)
People not in Cheyenne tend to be a bit scornful of Cheyenne (it's natural, Cheyenne being the seat of coercion, er, I mean, government); but in reality the statists are pretty evenly spread through the state. Freedom lovers as well.
-
Yep the "Colorado Greenies" reference has to do with the color of the colorado license plates. A small part of Wyoming culture is to identify people by their plates. Even within the state you can tell what county someone is from by the first number on the plate. :)
Did a search for surgical tech jobs in Wyoming and came up with several sites. Here is an example.

A curmudgeon friend here in thermop (county 15, the second least populated county) goes to Lusk (Niobrara, county 14, THE least populated county in WYO) to get his plates. He has no residency there, and he says there is no law that you must get plates from the county you live in. Considering he is 70+ years old, grew up in WYO, I've seen his truck plates with mine own two green eyes, and he knows the accurate skinny on the
crap official proceedings behind the scenes before it goes public....I believe him and have no reason to question his assertment.
just sayin'

My family and I live in Cheyenne and have found that there are many freedom loving and like minded folks here. We are refugee's from the People's Republic of Colorado and have been here since 03. Eventually we see ourselves moving deeper into the state but for now Cheyenne is working well for us.
-
Jvt,
are cheyenne-ites greenies? Ya mean tree hugger types i'm guessing. I've been here 32 years and there are some of those here.. but judging by all the pick-up trucks and SUV's on the streets of cheyenne, I would say no. I don't even know too many who bother to recycle, though there are collection bins around town.
As far as liberal politics goes, a democrat in this town is a whole 'nother animal then a democrat on either coast. Not that I agree with democrats, period, but frankly the RINO's are no better. You'll find strong conservative and border-line libertarian leanings on the local AM650 KGAB. But I would not say those views are a majority view here.
Rent is getting steep here: $400 for one bedroom dives, $500 - $600 for 2 bedrooms, $800 and up for 3 bedrooms. Lots of houses to rent that haven't sold yet. These are usually 800 to 1500 depending on size, location, amenities. Mobile homes to rent are available and cheaper, (usually $500 to $800, lot rent included) but usually on the south side of cheyenne. the south side is our poorer neighborhood, but frankly I like most of the folks better on the south side. It's run-down and low-brow, but also helpful, friendly, and cheaper. My brother-in-law owns and manages a mobile home park, if you're interested, lemme know here and we'll figure out a way to meet.
-
What is wrong with the South Side? ;D
I like it but am really itching to move north. Way north.
There are many low paying jobs in Cheyenne but few well paying jobs unless you work for the goverment. A good 50% of the population is either Lawyers or work for Lawyers. It is not a bad place to live but they are inching towards any other liberal city in ways such as citing you for an extra car parked in front of your house or wanting to charge more taxes. The recent cell phone while driving ban is a prime example,
Wyoming is pretty much a bring your own Job place.
