Whie Im working on my move, slowly but surely. Things seem to block progress, one step forward 2 back , type of thing.
After spending most of my life in SoCa, it takes a bit more work than one might think. I aint no youngster..
Careers and friends, family, and "stuff" etc all seem to slow down the pace.
Then I have a book coming out the early spring of 2010, and Im dealing with that ordeal . ( Songwriters Survival Guide to Success: How to Pitch your Songs), it is with a major publisher and just getting a few pictures is a time consuming thing. Among other info they need.
Writing for the magazine, Wilderness Way... Yes Rich your package will be forthcoming... ::)
And we are working on and filming a survival series about survival....been a busy old buzzard..
Also Im in the heavy duty planning stages for Dirttime 10 in Wyoming... that is almost a fulltime job..just a 7 months and a few days away.
BUT... California just raised the income tax on everyone ... get this ...by 10 percent.... 10%...10 % It will taken out of everyones pay check ....Im self employed and have been about half of my adult life...but still it can nail me..
It is only supposed to last a little while... right....
. I have a meeting setup with my CPA..
I really just want to "cut and run"..But I have no place located as of yet, etc.. small problems like where am I going to live etc..
Have to be cleared up..
I cannot go live with my daughter who lives in Gillette, some of you met her at Richs...
I have cut down on a lot of "gear" but still have a good deal Im bringing with me.
All has to do with my being able to be self-reliant....etc...
So the 10% will kick some butt with folks from Calie if they have the getandgo...

Hey Dude, I hear you. I have been trying to get out of the People's Republic of New York, which just hit its businesses and self employed with another tax to keep the transit system salaries moving. 1/3 of 1% of profits. Like you, I am hitting snag after snag, but I use those tax increases to stay motivated. I have no idea if I will ever get a job in Wyoming, but I keep trying. Everyday I take at least one step towards Wyoming, no matter how small it might be. I look forward to meeting you at DirtTime10.

CA will simply continue to raise taxes and drive the best and brightest out of the state. What remains will be the deadwood and moochers that suck the blood of those few productive citizens who remain behind. The politicians will stand around scratching their heads (and other body parts) trying to figure out how to develop more "revenue sources" for their faltering state.
Eventually Uncle Obama will bail them out, but in a not so obvious way.
It appears that the "Golden State" is not golden after all, but is rather a tarnished pile of junk metal.
Yeah, I used to live there in a previous life. Never again. Never.

*gasp* (begin sardonic irony towards Kahliforniah's "plight"):
Hahahahaha... oh wait. Sardonic Irony is called for.
How about truth instead? I heard the Guvernator giving zee speech about zee evektiveness uv his bailout. Zee guvernator sez it eez werkink wery well! Zey are un zee path to kreatink a whole 1 million jobz!
Zee 10% tax increase is the path to glorious new vistaz kumradez! Do not oppose the 10% tax hike! Only opponents of the peeplez revolushawnary politiks oppose zee neue tax hike of measly 10%.
/endsardonic irony.
OMG... I almost ran off the damn road hearing that. I was laughing THAT hard! I had to REALLY focus on my driving so I wouldn't put any wheel over the snooze zipper. By Moses' beard! I swear this stuff is GOOD! I mean DAMN GOOD. Let them fleece the sheep until it dies of hypothermia.
Disclaimer: I am not driving now. I parked sometime ago, so don't fret that I was being unsafe. I am merely finding a way to express my sheer laughter at this mess. And for the record, I was in a four wheeler, so it wasn't even a truck. :)

One of the things I thought of often... while I planned my ESCAPE from California...
At what point will they PREVENT the productive people from leaving?
Think it couldn't happen?
Get out of there, even if you have to come in just your long johns.
-
At what point will they PREVENT the productive people from leaving?
Boing just moved their 787 production to South Carolina because of taxes and draconian labor laws in WA. State officials are shocked, shocked I tell you...
Capital is mobile. Directive 10-289 in 3... 2... 1...

Do what it takes to get the hell out of Kalifornicate. No one said it would be a rose garden. Get your old Jarhead ass out here Boot.

Good to read an update, Dude, and I'm glad that you're still enroute for next year!
Your stress level will be cut in half after you get out of CA!

And largely because they are fed up with the Machinist Union striking every four years to prove they can do it. Gained absolutely nothing in the last strike except giving Boeing an excuse to move to SC. These strikes are very disruptive and give Boeing a bad name with customers. Delayed plane deliveries cost the customers money and since Airbus is a smart competitor Boeing really needs any edge it can get. The pols in western Washington here are pretty much all anti-business and this part of the state controls the legislature and usually determines who sits in the governors chair.

Dude, check this out. I believe it is close to dirttime 2010 event.

thanks for the replies everyone... and so of them were funny, even if they are true.. but sad also.
Im on track..
I really dont have to work, so getting a job is not a problem for me...
but knowing that you dont need a job, is when you get offered work... kinda funny and sad aint it??
I do have a few options that are opening up.
Dirttime 10 will be agood show... We have top instructors, and survival folks showing up for the classes..
I might even be there alreadyas a Wyoming rez... FSW ....how cool would that be , sez I ...
Jubal, who you callin a boot? oh yeah.. he has me by a few days..
Wyomiles, thanks for the link..
Boston, hope to see you at DT10 and yes I just know the stress level will go down..
Elk, shreznegger, or whatever is most likely the worst guv that Cal has ever had..
I dont foresee a future for him in politics.. except to lose.
Ya know I planned my escape one other time from California... I had the gear I wanted etc..
I had property located in Oregon, I put my house up for sale. The next day...
Feb 1971... wham, slam, bam... The Sylmar earthquake hit... They said it was 7.2, then said 6.8 etc..
I was 6 miles from the epicenter... I could not give my house away for the next several years.
I needed the money from that house to move back then..
So planning is sometimes goofed up and completly out of our hands.. dontcha know..
Anyway... Im charging ahead...

Keep pluggin on. You'll make it this time.

Dude,
It is not a 10% tax.
It is an increase in the witholding; it is raised by 10%. Basically the state is borrowing money, albeit by force, from employed taxpayers.
It will amount to about $4 per week per $50,000 of income. It will be returned next April.
If you are self employed it should not effect you.

Sounds like a press release from the FTB.
And the degree that it affects people is somewhat dependent on the decision the government makes next year, if they will actually pay the tax returns on time, or pay with IOU's or warrants or whatever.
Here's a solution for the serfs still behind enemy lines: Change your withholding at work and increase the number of dependents for state taxes. I'd go so far as to actually have to pay the state come April 15 next year: Why depend on their honesty?
-
I dont know how it could sound like a press release; Why would the state release a statement including "Basically the state is borrowing money, albeit by force"?
I am just stating the facts.
Changing your witholding, as you said, will negate the state's plan.
-
Changing your "withholding" beyond the actual amount is ILLEGAL. They could get you for underpayment of taxes and a penalty.
The point is that they're stealing your money in the first place. Why live under such oppression? Why contribute to the socialism and the redistribution of income? Why perpetuate the handouts to those who produce nothing?
The sales tax where my daughters live is 9.25%. That alone is reason to get the heck out.

Another reason my wife and I are looking to get out to Wyoming. Washington is not as bad as CA, but still the type of place where voters vote in tax hikes and against any controls on govt spending and taxing ability - yesterday's election being an example. Have been trying to get out to take a look around Weston and Crook counties but she's gone through two bouts of cancer in the last three years (three in total) and is finishing up one now. So, we are planning on another attempt next summer with an eye to retiring there in 3 or 4 years.

Your assertions that it's not a tax and will not affect people since they will get the money back: Especially while ignoring the history of the state not paying their bills.

It's not illegal to change the withholding to what your taxes actually are. I've always had more withholding taken out than my family status indicates, because I always had more (legitimate) deductions than average. I always arranged it to try to get a nominal amount (a few hundred) back rather than have to pay, but having to pay a nominal amount is legitimate as well.
-
Perhaps my language wasn't concise enough!
It is illegal to claim more deductions on the CA W4 than you are entitled to. You can also claim additional deductions for itemized deductions which you had last year or expect to have this year. Same as the federal. My point being that you can't simply claim a bogus amount to reduce the withholding during the year and then get it back later, at least not legally.
Yeah, they're trying everything in the book. Maybe after this year they'll claim that since people didn't scream about the extra withholding that they'll just go ahead and raise the actual tax rates to match!

They are taking my money and returning it... With no interest.. I dont care if it is ten bucks.
I understand it... What I understand and what it will be are different things ..
One is "theory" and one is "practice" ... Lets see how long it will last , for one thing.
They are the ones who have goofed everything up. Not me or the citizens.
If I need money and have to borrow it from any source I have to pay interest. But not the state!
Like all govmints that get out of control it is more taxes by whatever name the y want to call it..
We are already paying almost 10% here for anything we buy... Then some cities have a tax on top of that..
At my age I have seen nothing but lies and BS from politics, no matter who they were , no matter if I voted for them , etc..
I have contributed to Ca. for well over 50 years... Lots and lots of money. It stops with me as soon as I can get out.
Why am I upset, because I find I am getting less and less in return.
From the roads, to the state parks, from any kind of service, to no service.
Not only have the gun laws gone over the top it is several other factors as well.
This used to be a conservative state....
Then after WW2 and up through the 60s it grew... By the 70s the gun laws were being turned against us...
It happened because poeple from the east coast, midwest etc.. came here in droves. Millions of them..
The Californians you rant about are first or second generation Californians, all from the midwest and the east coast.
I m a 4th generation Californian on my mothers side... You shouldhear my mom on a rant about how all these people wrecked the place..
Ca is a beautuful place.. And in some places has amazing weather... Deserts that are mindblowers, mountains, not hills, ocean,
sking, hunting, the sierras, forests, fishing , etc... hard to beat...
But it is crammed with too much ... you name the problem... its here...

I feel like the frog in a pan of water that is slowly heating up.. Soon my goose will be cooked.. And I wont even know it..

I feel like the frog in a pan of water that is slowly heating up.. Soon my goose will be cooked.. And I wont even know it..
You know, I've only recently begun to appreciate California's heritage, and that's the best encapsulation of the place I've heard yet. I grew up in northern Virginia, the whole of which (at least over the past 25+ years anyway) is only a suburb of DC, so I can sort of empathize. NOVA (as we tend to call it) used to be a part of VA, but has slowly, continually sucked the life out of it the more Fedgovco grew and grew.
That should say something right there....I hated NOVA so much that I left it for SoCal. If I had the TINIEST idea beforehand, I'd have bolted straight for Wyoming (or at least Montana) instead. Yeeeeesh....
-
If this doesn't motivate you to leave, then I believe you really don't want to leave.
Your first post was riddled with excuses.
-
You can call them excuses... I call them real life.
Very few can say Im leaving next week and then go...Unless they have nothing to give up or leave behind.
I am a very prudent man. I plan. Then I act.
This is not something anyone should take lightly. This is a major move in my life and to those in my family.
I do not take what Iam planning as a whim, and then, gee, if it doesnt work I'll move again, I can go back to California.
In my life I dont have that kind of time. When this move comes to Wyoming, Im staying, and will be the last move I make in my life.
I might move a few times in Wyoming ,but maybe not...
I do know one thing I have learned over the years , and that is , it is very easy to critize someone else.
At my age most guys are doing nothing. I have a very busy, rich, diverse, and productive life.
But if we examine our approach to things I imagine others could be criticle as well,of you or anybody.. Easy to do. and easy for you to say so.
Not many people have that simple of a life and all the other conditions that make up a life.
Maybe your life is simple and not much to deal with.
Mine is not that simple.
Thanks for the encouragement.
Dude...check yer6
-
You do what you gotta do and in your own damned time. Your the only one who knows, and your the only one who's gotta figure how to do it and then do it. Any one can criticise but your the only one that can say f&8ck you, I'll do it my damned way, F.O.
Its really that damned simple aint it.. F*&^k em.

Thanks Jubal... You can buy me dinner next time we meet up.... >:D
See ya.. in a minute...
