Title: Tell me about Wyoming
Post by: Billinky on November 27, 2009, 01:00:51 AM
As a very lonely liberty minded person all by myself in KY, I discovered the FSP about 3 1/2 years ago.  I had tossed the idea around and was getting more serious about visiting NH and moving there.  Until tonight I did not realize there were any other active groups except in NH.

Obviously there are less people in the FSW but then WY is has less population, which is something I like!

It's fair to say that I would find Wyoming people to be more "my kind of people.'  This is especially because my only goal in life is to homestead in a very traditional and non-electric way as much as possible.  While you can do that just about anywhere, including NH, I'd say I could find more like-minded people in this state.  The biggest issue I'm seeing with WY is no trees.  I have 56 acres of land in KY that I had planned on homesteading in the coming spring (before I decided living in a non-free state area is no longer a good idea)  and timber is a big factor for me.  I've done some quick searches in WY already and in my price range, I'm seeing land with nothing but sagebrush and scrub and no spring or creek on it.  Any suggestions?

Well, we do have trees, just not very many - none of the land here will bear any resemblance to KY. And water is always an issue, with little of it running on the surface. Land with trees and running water is available, but is very expensive. If trees and water are your highest priority, you probably won't find what you want in Wyoming.

But if freedom is on top of that list, we've got plenty to share. :) Best way to find out is to come visit us and see for yourself.  We plant our own trees. :)

A couple. You seem to have a nice place in Ky, and having spent some time there at the resort area of Ft Knox, I don't reckon the Wyoming winters or landscape would be too much of a shock to you.

I think you might find the Black Hills area not too-dissimilar to Northern KY, at least. They originally called it the Black Hills because of all the tree trunks, not for the color of the rocks. We're talking up around Devil's Tower [Crook County] and Newcastle [Weston Co.] here.

If you've ever seen the movie *Close Encounters of the Third Kind,* that's Crook County and the Devil's Tower area, though obviously, the moviemakers cherrypicked for scenery. Likewise, if you've ever been to Mount Rushmore or the biker party at Sturgiss in South Dakota, you'd recognize the scenery.

It's not all sagebrush [actually, more grassland] and wide-open spaces, though there's plenty of that to be found in the Cowboy state, but I think if I was in your shoes, I'd make myself as comfortable as possible in KY, then come visit in Wyoming and check out a couple of the prettier corners of the place. Then if the Democratics and lefties in Louisville and Frankfort make Kentucky living a lot less pleasant than it is now, you'll have some ideas about a place you can go to should you choose to vote with your fett- and you'll have some pals in some pretty good hunting country.

Hope to see you in Wyoming!

The only way you are going to satisfy your curiosity about the geography of Wyoming is to visit us and snoop and see for yourself. Other than that your just whizzing in the wind with guess work.

Billinky,
I live near Devil's Tower, in the Black Hills. Have 48 acres here in the forest. I'd say I have about 10,000 trees on my property! Pine, oak, aspen. Deer cross in front of my windows several times a day. I've seen elk, a couple of mountain lions, and a bobcat! Plenty of wild turkeys too. Oh yeah, and I have a year round spring fed creek running thru the property. Can hear it from the house when during the spring till late summer.

So, don't tell me you can't find what you're looking for!

What I was saying was that I can't seem to find sizeable acreage with timber and water that I can afford.  No more than 1,000 an acre

Trees and water for no more than $1K per acre is pretty much a no-can-do situation here.  Heck, rangeland in parcels of less than a few sections (640 acre per section) for that price, is hard to find.

Here in Wyoming, we've been infected with the "It's worth $250 an acre, but I want $3,000." syndrome. Caused mostly by out-of-staters who insisted on paying $3,000 an acre for $250 land.

If I were you, I'd stay in Kentucky.

HardwareHank...

I seriously question your purpose here on the forum.
Quite frankly, Your attitude here leaves much to be desired.

And even at 3K an acre it beats the hell out 1000s of locations
in America today. There is more to location that what can be directly
profited off of that location from an ag standpoint.

Be happy it's not $10,000...$20,000...$60,000 for ONE acre.

Foreclosures/Tax Auctions are just starting to amp up with most Florida and California "second" homes and land coming open...lots (10 to 75 acres) at ANY stage of development are decreasing in prices OR just sitting on the market.

Outside non-controllable issues aside, as long as that continues for another three to four years, my plans will be fulfilled  >:D >:D >:D

Most of the trees here are gonna be dead soon so that's a moot point. The beetles have pretty much extinctified the lodgepole pine here in 5 county! I prefer being able to set up steel out to 800 or even 1000 yards and that's kinda hard in timber. This is not Kentucky, it's Wyoming. Anywhere you land here you'll never be to far from some sorta mountain range with plenty of trees and solitude. Come on out and have a look for your self. Welcome to FSW. ;D

I can't speak as to what he meant. But there's an old quote about the Oregon Trail that may offer some insight: "The cowards never started, and the weak died on the way." http://www.parentcaresolution.com/comments.asp?cat_id=35&id=346 (http://www.parentcaresolution.com/comments.asp?cat_id=35&id=346)

The ones that are left after such a sorting-out are the ones I want to have for my neighbors.

Hey all -

I am new to the site but not sooo new to the concept of living in a community of freedom. As I have been nearing the end of my service in the US Navy I have been looking for a place for my family and I to settle... I had been strongly considering sites in Latin America (I grew up in Panama) but am loathe to quit my country for political reasons that could be within our grasp to fix...

So, as an offshoot of my libertarian beliefs, I began to research the Free State Project... Although I have nothing against NH (I lived in upstate NY for a few years) but, as Boston points out in Molon Labe the better prospect is WY. I won't "dis" NH as choice is good...better 2 FSPs than just one right? In any event, I am beginning to do my research on WY and life post military retirement there...so, that said, any pointers on what I ought to be taking in to consideration as I plan to bring myself and my family (wife and 3 young kids) to the Cowboy State?

Thanks!

Welcome, Damien! The first thing to do is read as much as you can here at the forum to learn about Wyoming and us curmudgeons who have populated it. :) Please ask questions if you don't see what you need.

Engage in discussions here and get to know us as individuals.

Then plan to come visit us as soon as possible. Bring your wife and children. See the thread about the spring camp-out. http://www.fundamentalsoffreedom.com/fswforum/index.php?board=59.0 (http://www.fundamentalsoffreedom.com/fswforum/index.php?board=59.0)

You'll probably never want to leave. :)

Latin America is not a good choice. You have absoluty no rights. Here in Wyoming we still have rights. Just got to keep it that way.

MamaLiberty and Crappiewy -

Thank you for the kind words and advice. My wife and I are in initial planning mode for a move to WY sometime in 2013...just need to finish up my final Navy tour. We have done some research and are considering the Sheridan area though we are not locked in at this point on a specific city. With 3 young kids still in the house, a job is going to be a must...

In any case, again, thank you! :-)
