What can y'all tell me about reserve peace officer programs in Wyoming?
Are reserve programs common?
Do they tend to be more municipality than county?
15 years ago I joined the Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue unit as a way to give something back to my community.
I find there's not a whole lot of things better than bringing a cold, tired, hungry, slghtly the worse for wear lost or injured hiker safely down off the mountain and into the waiting open arms of loving family - tears and hugs all around.
PSMP also gets called on for general law enforcement activities.
Mostly we get called on for walking a street beat or additional traffic control at for large crowd events like Harley week, parades, celebrity funerals, races, etc.
The two functions overlap nicely when it comes time for an urban search, to man flood barricades or evacuate homes threatened by wildfire.
Much to my surprise I discovered I like being a cop.
Probably would not like it so much if it was an every day, gotta go to work thing, but I enjoy being the second officer in a patrol car.
Anyway, I am wondering about the chances of continuing that activity after I move to Wyoming, and was hoping some of you might have additional info.
Take care,
JT

I get "drafted" on a regular basis to the 5 county sheriffs dept for search and rescue all the time 'cause I'm a ski patroler ;D The way things are up here is that anyone with some wits and a good work ethic have 2 or 3 jobs.

Can you address the training requirements for a reserve officer?
Here in Kalifornia POST has raised the bar so high that many interested candidates decide not to bother.
Some sheriffs in northern KA are opposed to the entire notion. Their opposition led to reserves pretty well needing to go through the entire academy required for full time paid officers.
The class time and out of pocket expenses for uniforms, gear & weapons, and continuing education is a lot to ask of volunteers. :-\
