Title: Recent Gasoline Prices
Post by: FDNYLiberty on April 15, 2011, 08:05:26 AM
Hi Folks,

Just seen on TV that the "average" price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline (as of 4/14/2011) is now $3.81. They said that this price was the "average" price  everywhere across the USA EXCEPT in Wyoming.

What are you folks paying in different parts of Wyoming?

When I went to the gas station here in my town (suburb outside of NY City), and I was paying $4.04 regular unleaded. In New York City it is anywhere from $4.15-$4.39 a gallon.

Just curious. Thanks.

Yesterday at the Shell station in Campbell County - non-ethanol was 3.49 a gallon, 85 octane.

This is the most useful website for gasoline prices I've ever seen:
http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_gastemperaturemap.aspx (http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_gastemperaturemap.aspx)

I use it before I set out on any trip to decide which area to stop at.
As you can see, Wyoming is the "greenest" state! This is the only time I want to be "green".

You can zoom in, or double click on any area to see the individual gas station locations and prices.

What's really obvious from this map is the political boundaries and the prices. If the price of gas in any area was simply caused by its proximity to oil fields, refineries, or transportation, the state boundaries would not be obvious. The prices would slowly change with distance across the land. But look at Kalifornia. Sticks out like a big red thumb. Yet they drill for oil off the coast and much of the Alaskan Pipeline crude comes to Kalifornia for refining.

A picture says 1K words (modern phrasing).

Thanks for this great site, Mac. I didn't realize you could double-click for prices because the first few times
you click it only zooms. I see you have to keep zooming to get to the local prices.

Las Vegas - 3.89
Reno - 3.91
NorCal - 4.05 (Ouch)

Marc Faber, Gerald Celente and, from a different perspective, Lindsey Williams are
predicting $175 - $200/barrel oil by September of next year. That would translate into approx. $8/gallon gas.

Time to lock in the price of airline tickets and expect surcharges on trucking and the resulting trickle
down of rising prices as a result. I hear one airline is going to start issuing tickets whereby the gas
component can be paid on the day of departure.

Over in Spearfish it's about $3.10 per gallon this week.

Right now, WY gas prices are the LOWEST IN THE COUNTRY.

I'm paying 3.05 for premium here.  A couple of stations by the highway are stupid enough to go at ten cents more, and there's a Sinclair on 2nd street that sells at the two cent mark rather than five.

I'd say to prepare for gas to become VERY expensive, and probably hard to get at any price eventually...  Beware of renewed efforts to steal gas from parked cars.

Why Is Gasoline Consumption Tanking  http://www.streettalklive.com/off-the-street/683-why-is-gasoline-consumption-tanking.html
(Street Talk Live) by Charles Hugh Smith.
Gasoline deliveries reflect recession and growth. The recent drop in retail gasoline deliveries is signalling [sic] a sharp contraction ahead. Mish recently posted some intriguing charts depicting a significant decline in gasoline consumption. Then correspondent Joe R. forwarded me this stunning chart of gasoline retail deliveries, from the U.S. Energy Information Administration: (EIA) As Joe noted, this data is interesting because it is un-manipulated, that is, it is not "seasonally adjusted" or run through some black-box modifications like so much other government data. Retail gasoline deliveries, already well below 1980 levels, have absolutely fallen off a cliff. Is the plunge inventory-related, i.e. are storage facilities so full that retailers are simply putting off deliveries? Though I don't have data on hand to support this, I know from one of my correspondents who is in the gasoline distribution/delivery business that gasoline is very much a "just in time" commodity: gas stations are often close to running out of fuel when they get a delivery. Stations aren't holding huge quantities of surplus gasoline; that's not how the business works. Given the absence of "extra storage" in gas stations (and the fact that the number of gas stations has fallen dramatically since 1980), it is reasonable to conclude that retail delivery is largely a function of demand, i.e. gasoline consumption. Even if you dismiss the recent plunge as an outlier, the declines in retail gasoline deliveries are mind-boggling. If you look at the data from 1983 to 2011 on the link above, you will note that delivery declines align with recessions.

kbar6,

The gun show at Newcastle is at the Weston County Senior Citizen's Center.  US Highway 16 runs into and through Newcastle, I come to Newcastle from the west more or less on Highway 16 and turn north at the food market on the north side of Hwy. 16, then drive north for 3-4 blocks.  I don't know the street names and I don't remember what the food store is named  ???

Susan, or some other Newcastle resident, I need help with specifics  :D

Don't know how this got into "gas prices" - but ok.

Store is called "Decker's Market." You can only turn one way there. The old school that is now the senior center is at the end of that road. You can't go any farther without turning again. Large parking lot in front. There are usually signs directing folks to the gun show at the corner by the market.

It could be lower. Don't get me wrong, I expect the Fed to print money & cause hyper-inflation but you never know. We may have a deep depression with deflation. Not likely, but possible.

I'm not sure which is worse, a deep depression or hyper-inflation.  :(

The moderators are pretty quick to eliminate this stuff. It is best not to respond in any way, except to click on the link in the spam post that says "report to moderator." That's all anyone needs to do.

And, unfortunately, spam is a part of almost every message board and forum I know. Just has to be dealt with.

Meanwhile... back at gas prices... I paid $3.43 for unleaded reg. here in Newcastle on Tuesday. That's cash price. Credit card costs you another 3 cents a gallon. One place advertises 10 cents a gallon off on Sunday if you buy at least 10 gallons. My car only holds 8 gallons when bone dry.  Need to take a 5 gallon gas can with me, but I never remember.

Ever try to calculate how much of that price is tax (at every level of production and distribution, besides the direct tax), and all of the idiotic regulations and legal barriers that eliminate sources and make production difficult to impossible? How long was it again since any new refineries were built? If the price they got for the actual product was that high, you'd think someone would enter the market... But nobody is allowed to do that, of course.

I think it's some sort of miracle we have any access to gasoline at all.
Title: Re: Recent Gasoline Prices

The direct tax on a gallon, at least here in L.A., is about $1.25 per gallon. That includes only fed and state fuel taxes and sales taxes. There are of course other taxes as ML has mentioned.
Here's a blog that addresses the real reason behind high gas prices. FSW and FSP are also mentioned in one of the posts.

Diesel has been so high, I have'nt driven my Dodge with the Cummins in several weeks. When we have to go anywhere we take her Subaru. Diesel has been right at $4/gallon almost all winter here. Btween the cost of a new pickup and fuel prices, I've decided there are'nt too many places I want to go. We wait until we have a good sized list of things we need before we go into town. Im curious what fuel prices will be this summer.

For planning purposes it's probably best to build $8/gallon into expectations and work from there.
Anything less feels like a break and you end up with a mental buffer for the price volatility.

With the exception of Venezuela and the middle-east, the rest of the world has been
living with such 'outrageous' prices for quite some time.

The rest of the world dosent have zoning and allows you to work within walking distance from your home. Or even work in your home. Places that do have long commutes have cheap effective public transportation. I was in LA a few weeks ago and took the train. It cost me more and took twice as long as driving would have....

How quickly we become accustomed to things. Suddenly, what used to be outrageous, is now a deal!
And not just prices.
"Look mommy, that bad man isn't wearing his seat belt!"
"Look mommy, that bad woman is smoking outside!"
"Look mommy, that bad man eating a hamburger has a GUN on his belt!"
"Look mommy, those bad people across the street are shooting fireworks that go waaaay up! Isn't that illegal mommy?"

The best we saw in southern California a week ago, and the week before that,  was $3.89...but California has a lot of gas taxes!

In Albuquerque a week ago, $2.89 was good. Mid-week, I found $2.85. Yesterday, $2.81!

(I would rather have it under $2 but even this is a positive trend for now. We emptied the stored cans into the Jeep and I'll refll them with $2.81 gas.)

Yeah, prices are relative to a lot of things. Don't remember what year, but I once filled up at $5.50 a gallon - So. Calif. long time ago.

I've been "frustrated" with these "low" prices. I use only cash, and even here in WY the # of places allowing you to pump first with cash has dropped. So for the last two weeks in Gillette where I have to go into the Flying J and prepay, I try to give just enough to fill it just shy of clicking off so I don't have to go back in. Darn! Both times I still waaaay overestimated the $$ consumed and had to go back and get my change.

Life is tough here in Wyoming . . .  ;D

Was $2.759 I think.

Ps. I've posted this link before and I'll do it again:

Quite useful. You can see at a glance that Casper and Gillette are low prices. Just keep double clicking and drilling down to locate exact stations and exact prices.

$2.67 to $2.69 here in Albuquerque last week. This week a lot more! The best I could find was in the $2.70s and some of the cheaper stations last week are in the $2.80s or $2.90s this week.  :-[

Most places in Colorado Springs are right around $2.65-$2.69 but there is one that is over $3 for some reason...

Oh we miss the cheaper gas prices in Wyoming.....
We came back to MN last week with $3.25/gal to greet us.....and still is hovering around that price.  Right now in the Twin Cities gas ranges $3.19-3.35/gal

Here's an interesting map to look at for gas prices across the nation.
http://www.twincitiesgasprices.com/Prices_Nationally.aspx (http://www.twincitiesgasprices.com/Prices_Nationally.aspx)

this link is by county:
http://www.twincitiesgasprices.com/Price_By_County.aspx (http://www.twincitiesgasprices.com/Price_By_County.aspx)

Since most gasoline is at octane rating of 87 (mid-grade gas is 89, and premium is 91-93). Wouldn't the price per gallon comparison have to be from the exact same octane?  I certainly remember filling up gas in Wyoming for $2.67/gal for the 85 octane.  Actually, come to think of it, we filled up with the mid-grade level a couple times in Wyoming, since it was cheaper than the lowest octane!

$3.41 yesterday in Newcastle at the Sinclair.  Goes up and down almost daily, sometimes in large leaps. I can only imagine what a nightmare it must be to run a gas station these days.

At least there IS gas with no lines! You may remember that happening in the 70's, maybe someday it will happen again. (Not including things like storms)

Yes, I do remember. My first husband managed a Shell station during those years. The station was in a small town on the outskirts of San Bernardino. They were very busy at times, and occasionally could not get gas at all, but I don't remember any long lines. I suspect that was mostly a big city thing.

Just back from Italy where gas is just over $6/gallon.  At least the wine was a bargain!
