Title: So, where are people moving FROM?
Post by: Paul Bonneau on April 04, 2014, 12:37:53 PM
A case for moving to Wyoming might be made by looking at the places people are escaping from. If you are living in one of these states, think about it... Don't just move from one rotten state to another.

Where does Wyoming rank on the list of states people are fleeing TO?

The migration out of New Mexico is largely economic in origin. The state is still waiting for the recovery. Unemployment statistics show around 50 to 80 job seekers per job opening. People are moving out to find work. I will probably be doing the same,  soon, but will also be looking for an uncrowded place where it will be possible to grow/raise food. In the meantime,  I'm getting my house ready to sell, and looking for work.

If everyone is leaving, How will you get the house sold? Good Luck, hope to see you in Wyoming!

Net leaving. More leaving than coming in. Real estate investors are buying even if nobody else is.

Wyoming can use more good people and we have the jobs to support them, although I hope we don't aquire folks simply because things are going to hell where they live now. We need people who have taken the time to find a spot that promotes freedom and self sufficiency. We don't need the types who leave a spot just because things are bad. That is how places wind up with the wrong types of folks who then try to change things to be like where they come from. The right kinds of folks will want to come here and will have already had plans in place to come here, rather than being forced to come here because of economic reasons.

There are alot of bad places to live in this country, but I would like to believe that even those bad places have good people who would like to see things set on the correct path. The smart people in those places are either working on fixing the problems, or they have seen the futility and are looking for good and freedom loving places in which to move and raise their families. Those are the people I am trying to reach in my own efforts.

There are quite a few places in this country that simply aren't worth the effort of trying to save them at this time and thankfully there are smart people there who realize that. I have told a couple of people from this board and several others from some other boards I belong to that I don't broadcast the positives of Wyoming to just everybody. The smart folks have already figured it out and the dumb ones don't need to be encouraged to move here. Once the smart ones have figured out what a great place Wyoming is, they will usually start asking questions. That is when I step up and start trying to help and letting them know what all is here. When making a generalized post on some board though, I accentuate the negatives about Wyoming. The smarter people usually see through the ruse though and several times that has led to some very positive conversations.

I am sorry to see things so bad in other places that people are having to uproot their lives and their families just to make a living, but I don't see that as a reason we should start promoting them to move here. I remember when Katrina happened and TPTB in this area wanted to start recruiting all of the out of work people down there to move up here. That was doing nothing but asking for trouble. Sure we had jobs here, but the out of work people they were wanting to recruit didn't have jobs before Katrina and they didn't want jobs after. The people who did have jobs before would either have jobs afterward, or they would find another somewhere else. Some of them we even smart enough to look this direction and make a move.

With the internet and all of the information available these days, if a person is unable to see the economic advantages there are out here, I don't see how they could ever be an asset to this state or to the promotion of freedom. I am all for helping people as I have tried to help more than a few with a move to this great place, but I will leave it up to them to figure out the reason why they should move here.

That's well written, Tex! I can't argue with a single word.

A couple times in the past, someone relatively new thought that we "want people to move to Wyoming."
Wrong. We do not want people to move to Wyoming.
We want GOOD people to move to Wyoming.

And of course, we want to be part of the community of good people already here.

Spot on, guys.

The FSW SofI tries to make "good people" requirement pretty obvious:

Quote
I solemnly pledge that I am able and willing to join the Free State Wyoming and its effort to populate Wyoming with individuals of demonstrably ethical character who -- forsaking fraud, theft, and aggression -- desire to peaceably co-exist as reasonable neighbors for the goals of political liberty, free trade, and voluntary cooperation.

By hereby joining the Free State Wyoming, I either:

declare that I have already established bona fide voting residency in Wyoming,

or solemnly pledge my best effort to legally establish such no later than seven years from today.

I left rural Upstate New York when I moved to Wyoming in 2012.  I moved there in August 2004 (from South Texas) when I became engaged to my wife.  By September 2004 I was ready to leave.  Gun laws, lack of personal freedom, taxes, and culture were the primary motivating factors.

Yeah, good point. Economic refugees; one of the reasons Gillette is so screwed up, I'm guessing.

I don't recall anybody saying we should recruit particularly the Katrina people. I do think it makes sense to look at people coming from New York and California though, providing you vet them first (figure out where they are coming from, philosophically). The problem is getting people off their duff, and California's economic woes are a good way to do that. What those woes are not good for is selecting freedom lovers; that has to be done independently.

It all depends on how the individual assigns causes for his problems. If he realizes government is behind most economic problems, he is not likely to call for more government in his adopted state. If he believes economic problems are caused by not enough government, then he would call for more and is not a good match for us.

Of course there are some people in Wyoming who should be encouraged to emigrate, too.  :)

Right on!

Just give me a place with less people and more freedom.
Peace and quiet.

I wonder if Kansas would not be in the top 10 of this list now...with the gun law change.
