Title: Invaded by liberal Californians?
Post by: Paul Bonneau on July 04, 2015, 03:05:33 PM
We've heard the old chestnut about people moving somewhere causing the same problems they moved to escape. Just ran into this comment:

Quote
Indeed, last year, Nate Silver and Harry Enten used data from the University of Chicago’s General Social Survey to demonstrate that people moving from a liberal area to a conservative one and vice versa tend to have political attitudes that resemble those in their destination, not their old home. “If anything, movers generally have more extreme political views than natives,” Silver and Enten wrote. “Thus, the process of intra-country migration could be contributing to political polarization rather than making states more purple.”

Far be it for me to believe some psych study cooked up by who knows who, but I was always doubtful of the old chestnut anyway, particularly after working on the Wyoming Liberty Index. But yeah, at least immigrants do drive up property values.

I hear this all the time and it does bug me.
No one forces sellers to raise prices as people with more money come into an area or when demand increases.
This is just "free"** people making their individual choices at work.  IOW, a market.

If locals wanted property values to remain stable they would simply not raise them.  Of course that isn't what the local sellers want, but local people who are buyers are up in arms blaming the 'immigrants' for 'driving up prices'.  They should be blaming their neighbors for asking (and getting) more for their property.

So to put the onus on the 'immigrants' as if they are somehow doing something wrong is disingenuous.

**Yeah, I'm using the term pretty loosely.

I could see it both ways.

FSWP is basically a way to recruit small government voters to Wyoming, but I can see how some big government people, unhappy with California (now that they've destroyed it), might move to Wyoming and try to "fix" it. (thereby destroying it too)

BTW: The definition of inflation (in some circles) is an increase in the money supply. If you have people moving to an area bringing in "outside" money it will increase the local money supply and should increase prices in multiple sectors, but most likely in housing and double espresso lattes.  ;D The immigrants ARE driving up prices. They way to fix that is to make sure the immigrants to your area are broke and mooch off the system.  :P

So I guess that I am an immigrant then?

not from Wyoming, but moving there soon.

So you'll can blame me for the raise in the cost of everything.

so be it.

Immigrants are always welcome if they come because they want to blend in. Those who want to move in and make changes are evil.

Probably not. Most, if not all, of the real estate "offers" are just thinly veiled get-rich-quick themes. The "sellers" are just hoping that a rich buyer will come by in the next couple years and pay their stupid high price. In Hulett, it seems that half the town is for sale, but on inspection it looks like zero properties are for sale at a decent price.

I was thinking of the two legged sort. Lots of them most everywhere these days, unfortunately. And they don't usually rattle any warning.
