Title: FSW Forum replacement
Post by: Cyclonesteve on November 26, 2017, 11:33:12 AM
I've had a great time reading the posts of new and old members over the years on this forum, but with no new members and almost no posts from old members I've come to the sad conclusion that this forum is dead.  :'( (or at least in a vegetative state on life support)

While I'll probably come back from time to time to see if there is anything new, I was hoping someone out there could point me to an active site that discusses Wyoming and world issues.

Thanks, and have a great day!

I think a good analogy would be a hobbyist or special interest magazine. There will be readers who are just getting into the hobby and are looking for articles written for beginners. Readers with experience will want articles that cover new ways, tips, and tricks. The old timers will tend to get bored unless there is enough news or highly specialized articles.

How to keep everyone happy? That is a publisher's problem.

On forums, the old timers often hang out and help the beginners.

My feeling is that most of the "Wyoming Seekers" have found what they were looking for. The many who are/were not actively seeking, might still be interested if someone took the effort to "sell" it to them.

Speaking for myself, I am happy to help someone who is seeking, but I have better things to do than to "sell" an idea to people who don't or won't understand its benefits. I am glad to discuss a healthy diet, but if someone wants to cram their face with fast food, that's their choice, not my problem.

It could be that there are many people who are still interested, but are tied to a job. At the beginning, my hope was that some of us would bring or create businesses that would help others get started. But I haven't seen much of that. A couple times, I offered my programming and/or electronics experience to FSW members with their projects, but no takers. How sad is that?

I would recommend goldismoney2.com as a lively forum with discussions of money, politics, and everything else.

Hi Steve,

I've appreciated your efforts in posting on the FSW forum.  You've certainly done your part as a newer member.
The lack of an "echo" is understandably disappointing.

I note with irony hearing some FSWer complaints that "nobody posts on the forum anymore" .
Well, to know that one would have to log on.  I.e., they log on, notice no/few newer posts, and then log off.
Without having added anything of their own . . .
If one visits, but never posts, then why complain that nobody else posts?
I've long admonished that the FSW is what its members make of it.
After 6000+ posts over a decade, I've "rowed my oar".

I've met many great people through the FSW and made valuable friendships.
However, I've also encountered a surprising number of rude cowards and gossiping backstabbers.
So, I've mixed feelings in retrospect about my decade in this, and will just leave it at that.

The free state idea is a good one, but apparently a bit early.
The FSW never attained sufficient numbers for "critical mass".
We hadn't "first mover" advantage, and Wyoming is (for most free staters) a more challenging move than NH.

However, if it's any consolation, when I was last on the FSP forum in 2014 or so, members there mentioned the significant
reduction in their forum participation.

Both orgs were the "bus" for their respective states, and once the "passengers" arrived, the bus had done its part.
This "bus driver" did what he could.  I thank you all who expressed appreciation and helped out.

I agree with Richard's observation:

My feeling is that most of the "Wyoming Seekers" have found what they were looking for.

I'm grateful to Richard for being our forummeister, and hosting us on his server.
He's the reason the FSW Forum still exists at all.
If he ever tires of doing so, I will thank him with no rancor.
Or, if he would like to place the forum on "read only" status, I would also understand.

There may only be a remnant here right now. However I, for one, like the candle being  in the window. Trump being in office slows the country's decay compared to what would happen if Clinton were in. Every 4 years an election gone bad or stolen could change the country in significant ways. Individual states could also make things progressively (pun intended) worse in various parts of the country. I hope to see the forum continue.

Having made the move a few years ago to Wyoming, I am enjoying it here.

I do understand about the slow movement of the forum.

Maybe as I get more done on the homestead, I will post it here.
