Title: FSW Ham Radio Operators??
Post by: Seniortech on April 05, 2007, 11:56:59 AM
Greetings to everyone.

I really like this forum.? It is the ideal way to greet, discuss, learn, communicate.

I thought I read that someone is a Ham Radio operator, but I can't find that thread again.
So, is there anyone out there who might want to talk on the air?? ?I can operate SSB on
HF, any band, and probably even work CW although my fist is pretty rusty.

Mama L:? Linda and I are coming to the JAM, along with son, John and his wife, Kim, and
18 mos old Gus.? Looking forward to meeting everyone there.

John

Sorry, dear... I don't even do AM or FM radio much. LOL  I used a CB radio at least 30 years ago, but not since... so I'm no help here.  But I'm looking forward to meeting all of you in June! Hope you can get some "hams" here to talk to.

Greetings John!

Maybe this was the thread?: http://www.fundamentalsoffreedom.com/fswforum//index.php?topic=3453.0

Looks like there are a few hams here.  I would love to talk HF, but I'm moving at the end of the month and probably won't have a decent antenna up until around June 1.  I'll get back to you when I have my HF rig working again.

I will be coming to the Jam and will bring my UHF/VHF HT for local comm of course  :).  Looking forward to meeting you then!

I had never seen that thread before.  Lot of comments there and a lot
to think about.  Looks like a bunch of hams around.

I never heard of any psch test but I last renewed my ticket in '04.  I read all
the QST's and I don't remember any such being mentioned.  Lot of other
problems though, like antenna restrictions, BPL and the like.  The usg does
want to control our every breath from the cradle to the grave.  I'm agin it.

Yes I think the psych test is urban (or RF :)) legend.  Antennas are a problem unless you're way out in the boonies.  I suspect in most parts of Wyoming we'll be able to put up the 200' tower with the multiple yagis and a discone on top if we want  ;D.

I'm in the boonies here in Arkansaw, no problems.  I have a 45' tower but an ice storm
destroyed my quad and I'm operating with only an inverted vee dipole.  Works pretty
good though.

I hope I can get in the boonies in Wyoming, at least far enough out of town to
avoid most town problems.  Hopefully I'll be there within a year and looking
forward to it

I need to learn more about antennas - I'd love to buy you a beer (or whatever you'd prefer :)) at the Jam and pick your brain a little.  I'm in the city now and need to be unobtrusive.  I'm thinking maybe a birdhouse on a nice tall pole, for example.

Hi John and welcome!

I'm a Wyoming-bound ham from Pennsylvania (N3CMI).

I just bought some land near Sundance and I look forward to putting up some serious antennas when I get moved out there sometime this summer.? I'm in the process of selling my house here in PA, so the tower will be coming down soon.? Since that also supports my 40M dipole, I guess I'll be off the air for a while.? In truth, I haven't been very active lately anyway, but I hope to make up for that when I get out there!

D'ahin:  What?  Beer at the Jam?  Sounds like a gud idea to me.  I don't know that much about
antennas but I would like very much to talk about anything ham.  My first antenna was a piece
of comm wire tied to a 10" crescent wrench and flung over a pine tree.  It worked very well
for cw, but that was back in '68.

Ed:
Tnx fer the welcome.  I am in the process of getting rid of stuff here too.  It takes time and
thought.  I won't get moved to WY by this summer, but maybe by this time next year.  We're
coming to the Jam, though.  Wife, Linda, is also a ham as is son, John (both techs).  I've been
around long enough to make extra.  I have always been mostly a ragchewer and I haven't been
very active lately either.  Are you coming to the Jam?

I look forward to meeting you both at the Jam.  Maybe there will be other hams too.

For a moment, I thought it would be cool to have a FSW amateur radio interest group - maybe even a regular FSW net.

But then I was reminded of this video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UAwZKL4_0w

Yup, herding cats. ::)  I swore I'd never do that again.

But I'll have some beer and a shady/dry place to hang out at the Jam, in case anyone stops by.  Radio talk is ok, BTW  ;).

Hello all,
I'm looking into moving to Wyoming withing the next year. Seems to be a pretty good group of guys on here. I just sold all my radios (Icom IC-718 and Yaesu FT-7800) to purchase a Sig P229R. Things are starting to get a little out of hand around here and the cops can't even protect themselves, much less me. I hope to be back on the air in a few months. I would love to find a place for a full wave 160 loop and a few other up about 100'. Well, thats it for now. Have a great weekend/Holiday.

Matt:
Welcome to the forum.  If I had to choose between an Icom and a Sig I would have done the same thing.  The situation
in NC sounds about like the same thing in AR.  Our sheriff even shot himself in the butt-tocks.   I am making my plans to move also.  I have been to WY looking at places but need to get rid of my stuff here before I can move.  Hopefully within a year.
I am going to the Jam in June and will have a few extra days to look around.  Being born and raised here doesn't mean
I have a life sentence to the prison of granpa's old home place.  I imagine you'll manage to get a rig and be back on the
air before long.

P'ahin:
Yeah, that herding cats is futile alright.  But a regular ragchew on the air about things FSW might work.  I read somewhere
on this forum about tentative plans for a local net, maybe in Crook County, sometime in the future.  It would seem that
communications among FSW'ers would sooner or later be essential and hams can get on the air, one way or another.
Anyway, I will look forward to your shady place at the Jam.

Jim,
Thanks for the welcome. I don't know when I might get back on the radio, I have to find a job right first. I am looking to make the move to WY in the next year or so. Probably to the NE part of the state and then likely Crook county. I will be looking for rooms to rent and more in the coming months so that may keep me off the radio. Have a great week/holiday.

Welcome, Matt.

It's great to see so many hams and potential hams here!

I've been going through the tough process of sorting through a good 35 years worth of ham and other electronic stuff, deciding what to keep.? Part of me says get rid of all this stuff to make it easier to move, but then I think what a great radio environment WY will be.? I've managed to whittle things down a bit and will be bringing the best of the boatanchors (R390, R390A) and some old Drake and Collins gear.? The idea is to keep stuff that I can maintain myself indefinitely.?

I like the idea of a Crook County net.? We used to have a 2m simplex net here on 145.080 until the packet stuff forced us off the freq.? It worked great as an intercom while chasing DX and was a way to keep in touch.

I don't know if I'm making it to the Jam yet.? This is going to be a busy summer, but I'll try.

This thread hasn't been active in 6 years, but thought this might be the best place to post this from seniortech:

http://lewrockwell.com/orig13/hathaway4.1.1.html (http://lewrockwell.com/orig13/hathaway4.1.1.html)

An interesting article about the freedom minded aspects of ham radio.
And even though "ToFreedom" hasn't posted here in years, I keep in touch via ham radio (with other FSW members) at least once a week.

I've thought about getting a ham license off and on for years. Don't know if I need it but articles like this make me want it.  ;)

Me, too. In my case it is one of the dozens of things I hope to accomplish this year!

Good article, btw, thanks for the link.

You can tell David has been a radio operator for a LONG time; great article!
His second Radio call sign (CP6XZ) is for Santa Cruz, Bolivia.  On recent trips
thereabouts there were serious radio antennas on half of the houses in the
gated areas.

I am very impressed with the recent batch of FSWer Hams.
When things calm down for me, I'll be keen to join them!
Way to go, y'all!
