Title: New FSW friend here...
Post by: Peregrin on June 06, 2008, 02:39:12 PM
Hello all!  My name is Renee.  I'm 35, married, with three children (homeschooled).  I grew up in Fort Collins, Colorado but have lived in Michigan for the past 14 years.  I would love to move to either Wyoming or New Hampshire (the "other" free state ;) ), but can't at present, so I have to be a Free State Friend rather than a member (for now).  I'm looking forward to talking with other westerners (I still consider myself one) about such beautiful things as liberty and self-sufficiency.  Cheers!

Welcome! It's nice to have a few more ladies on this forum. What would you like to talk about? Have you read some of the older posts here? You'll find out a lot about us that way very quickly.

Thanks, MamaLiberty!  I'll definitely go through the older posts here when I have time.  My interests include homeschooling, gardening, living off the land, and philosophies of freedom (I'm currently studying anarchy ;D).

Homeschooling Check

Living off Land Check (more deer than we can eat in the freezer)
Freedom Philosophies Double Check

Re:  Anarchy....check out www.strike-the-root.com there are usually great articles.  In fact they've been running a series over the past week based on a new free book, EVERYDAY ANARCHY (links:  full book (http://www.scribd.com/doc/2873289/155325533) & articles/chapters (http://www.strike-the-root.com/archive/molyneux.html)).  Not a bad review of positions, reasons, & logical, opps can't have that, thought.

Welcome to FSW regardless.

Manumit, thanks for the welcome!  I've been reading Strike the Root for several months now, and am currently reading through Everyday Anarchy when I get the chance.  Good stuff to mull over....

Peregrin:
Anybody who homeschools their children is #1 in my book!
Our children are our future and to take the effort to homeschool you children and avoid the "youth indoctrination camps" as Vin Suprynowicz calls them, is paramount to the future of our country.

I look forward to your future comment on the forum. Welcome.

Mac

Thanks for posting the Everyday Anarchy links Manumit!  For people who have more time to listen than read, I noticed Freedomain Radio has the audio book, too:
http://www.freedomainradio.com/free.html (http://www.freedomainradio.com/free.html)

Another anarcho-capitalist classic that's available as an audio book is The Market for Liberty by Linda & Morris Tannehill through our FSP friends in New Hampshire:
http://freekeene.com/free-audiobook/ (http://freekeene.com/free-audiobook/)

While I'm at it, the Ludwig von Mises Institute has Murray Rothbard's For A New Liberty as an audio book:
http://mises.org/media.aspx?action=search&q=For%20A%20New%20Liberty (http://mises.org/media.aspx?action=search&q=For%20A%20New%20Liberty)
and as an e-book:
http://mises.org/literature.aspx?action=search&q=For%20A%20New%20Liberty (http://mises.org/literature.aspx?action=search&q=For%20A%20New%20Liberty)

Also, the Ludwig von Mises Institute is working it's way through Murray Rothbard's Conceived in Liberty as an audio book:
http://mises.org/media.aspx?action=search&q=Conceived%20in%20Liberty (http://mises.org/media.aspx?action=search&q=Conceived%20in%20Liberty)
and has all 4 volumes as an e-book:
http://mises.org/literature.aspx?action=search&q=Conceived%20in%20Liberty (http://mises.org/literature.aspx?action=search&q=Conceived%20in%20Liberty)

Living off Land Check (more deer than we can eat in the freezer)

Hmmm, if you ever need a home for any of that deer meat you can't eat, Mama has a little freezer space... and loves to eat venison!! :)

Yes, my parents still live in Fort Collins, and my brother lives with his wife and children in Loveland, CO.  We're going to Colorado at the end of June for a family reunion.   ;D

Well if you have an extra day to drive north you might want to check out our June get together.

Is that the one going from June 19-23?  We'll be driving from Michigan to Colorado on the 20th-21st (and possibly the 22nd)...I don't think we'll be able to make it, but thanks for the invite anyway!

Fort Collins and Loveland have become occupied territory.  I remember back in the 70s-80s when we would take a weekend trip down there now and then for shopping or antique car swap meets all the farmland.  Now it is getting sliced up for homes and strip malls.  It is such a waste.

If your husband or you are into evil guns, stop by Jensen Arms and you will not be disappointed!

Welcome peregrin. I live in Laramie for now. Self reliance? Being accountable for your actions? Teaching your own children? Yup,,   you'll fit in well here.

Yes, it's definitely changed for the worse.  I get depressed every time I visit--the Front Range has been overrun by gigantic buildings and commercialism.  And the smog isn't just in Denver anymore.  :(

Before there was smog in Denver, there was a constant dust cloud, going back as far as there are observers who recorded their observations. If you go out on the praire far enough to be unable to see the smog over Denver and the lights from anything except stars are night, you will find air which is as pristine as it ever was, according to human senses.
The smog now extends from almost Pueblo to almost Cheyenne. It is merely an indication that more people value a comfortable lifestyle over a less-polluted outdoor environment, something which should be clearly understood by someone studied in Austrian economics.
Most of the population is driven by perverse incentives rather than thoughful contemplation.

Welcome Peregrin!
I was just in WY this last weekend for an Appleseed shoot.
The Free State Wyoming folks I met up there where "da bomb".
Really, just wonderful people. If not for a wife I love down here in CA I wouldn't have gone back.
I'm just guessing here but I think from your posts that you  would fit in rather well.

Did you happen to meet Mary Margaret Glennie while you were still in Fort Collins?

Nope.  I was in high school in the late 80s, and extremely ignorant of politics/freedom in general.  Never even heard of her until you mentioned her.

Belleville--about halfway between Ann Arbor and Detroit.  I think I'd prefer to live in the UP.... ;D
