I am one of the spoiled east coasters who has curbside trash collection 2x per week and recyle material (cans, bottles etc) 1x per week.

How is trash collected out in the rural areas? Recyclables? Do you have to haul your trash to city/county dump? I am particularly iterested in what they do in Crook County. Any info on other rural areas is also helpful.
When I was in Medicine Bow (pop. 289), they had a couple of dumpsters for public use, since the nearest dump was 90 miles away. If you were outside the town, you drove in to town to dump your garbage. You could burn it, but there were often "no burn" restrictions in the county.

Here in Wheatland, inside city limits there is weekly garbage pickup from dumpsters located around town (usually not more than a block away). If you want to recycle, the county dump has a recycling station. People in the county use WDS or other sanitation services, that gives you a dumpster they pick up every 2 weeks. The county dump is CHEAP... don't think I've ever payed more than $4 for a truckload, and recyclables are free (which includes scrap wood).

In another corner of the state where I live (rural Laramie County), a private firm (a mom & pop shop, not Waste Mgmt) provides me with a dumpster where I put my trash and they dump it and take it to the landfill for me.  I could do it myself but the dump isn't nearby, so the cost of doing it myself isn't all that attractive (plus who wants stinky old stuff leaking out of garbage bags in your truck bed?).

Recycling?  Hah!

In Wheatland we burn when the fire ban is lifted, or we hold trash till we have a pickup load and pay $2 (the most we've paid is $2.50) at the dump.

Here in Laramie, the city gave us a nifty blue trash can to put all our recyclables in and they come pick it up every other week.  While tacking on a 3 dollar fee to our water bill.

I love the government here, they do so much for us.
