Is FSW in My Future? Visiting Thermopolis This Week
« on: June 04, 2007, 12:09:35 AM »
Today I mailed my SofI to sign up as an associate member.? Three years ago I started searching for libertarian communities ? groups of people who survive and thrive without depending on the government or surrendering their individuality and property.? At some point in my quest, I found the FSW website.? My impression of FSW was a group of rugged outdoor types living in their hand-built log cabins.? I couldn?t picture any role for me ? an older woman who hasn?t even been on a camping trip in several decades.? I have been working in information systems for the past 25+ years, most recently developing web and database applications.? ?

A few months ago I started some serious retirement planning.? I am in the market for a business friendly state to set up a small company to supplement my very inadequate savings.? When I was researching Wyoming my thoughts turned to FSW.?

What a surprise to read postings on the forum from people of all ages with so many different skills.? I expect there will be many interesting people at your June Jamboree.? ?Hopefully, I can join you next year.

This week I'm planning a retirement recon trip for June 7 ? 13.? The Thermopolis area is on my itinerary.? Does anyone have any info about good places to visit, stay or eat ? or places I should avoid?

Thanks for your help and keep up the good work.

Mari in Washington State? ?

Welcome indeed! I'm a 60 yr. old retired nurse who escaped from California! Too bad you couldn't make it to the Jam this year, but please do come next time. I don't know anything about Thermopolis, but if you get over to Weston County any time, please plan to drop in. I'll be here. PM if you want directions or just to yak.

Looking forward to meeting you!  MamaLiberty

Mari,
Welcome to the forum and FSW.

I live in Crook County and have only been to Thermopolis about twice. I looked at property there a year ago. I almost settled there. Nice place. Quiet. Looks nice. You've got to go see the hot springs and walk across the little bridge and thru the park. It's very nice. What else it has going for it I honestly don't know.

According to my "official" spreadsheet here, Thermop is on the 99th percentile as far as the high temps in the summer. During the hottest month the average high is 91F. Likewise, it's not nearly so cold as other places around the state. My wife can't take the heat due to a medical condition so we moved to a cooler locale.

If you'd like to PM me with your email adr I could send you the climate spreadsheet that shows about 180 locations throughout the state for rainfall, minimum high, max high, min low, and max low. Don't know how important climate is to you.

And no, I don't live in a hand built log cabin!

All for now and good luck on your recon trip.

Hi and welcome Mari!  Thermopolis is a really neat place to visit.  You should definitely make your way to one of the hot springs pools/hot tubs.  The Tipi one is more quiet, less kids  ;D  Star Plunge is nice too but it is a hot spot for the younger crowd.

You have to visit the Four Winds Trading Post! You'll find some like-minded friends who own the store.  I have not eaten there except at the Holiday Inn & Safari Club and it is pretty good, no complaints. Great place to visit to see some interesting animals (taxidermy) and really cool pics of safari trips.  Prices are average.  There is an Italian restaurant that was recommended to us but we have yet to try it out.

There are several stores to browse through, bookstore, boutique type store, etc.  There is also a dinosaur musuem if you're into that. I think it costs about $15 to tour - please, someone correct me if I'm wrong on the price. It's kind of a small museum but they sometimes have bus tours to another place to see where the dinosaur bones were found/are being found.

Anyway, stop by the Four Winds store and the folks there will be better able to recommend or not recommend places to go.  HTH.

Have a wonderful and safe trip!

Howdy Mari, glad you came back to visit with us here.  Yep we are a pretty diverse group and the JAM last year helped me to see what a great bunch of folks are assembled here.
What direction are you entering Wyoming from as we might be able to point out some places to see along the way.  Miles

Thanks to everyone who made me feel so welcome here.? My trip to Thermopolis is not going to be this week. Apparently the vacation and on-call schedules got scrambled and it was just easier to make the trip another time.

Does Thermopolis smell because of the hot springs?

I visited them in Yellowstone and absolutely despised the stench.

Thermopolis does not smell bad at all and takes only minutes to get used to.

Just think of it as the smell of healing powers Erik, LOL!  Your swimsuit will be stinky after you've been in the water but it'll eventually fade.  You get so relaxed you won't care!

Mari - sorry you had to delay your trip but our weather hasn't been all that sweet the past couple of days, had some snow yesterday.  Today we're getting into the 60s.

My neighbor was in Thermopolis this morning and on the way back saw a mama bear and her two cubs near the exit to Worland.

There is a big barn of a roadhouse bar on the side of town opposite the Safari Club called, I think, One Eyed Jacks.  They have excellent burgers.  I think they brew their own beer too, which I wouldn't have tried as we were riding motorcycles in Wyoming and stopped there for lunch last summer.

Alas, One eyed Jacks  is no more, it burned May 11, and will not be rebuilt.  If it's great burgers you be looking for, try Butch's in Kirby, or the cowboy bar in Meteetse. Both serve buffalo burgers and they are equally terrific.  The cowboy bar is very interesting, it has changed very little since Butch Cassidy was arrested there in 1894.
Also Thermopolis gets my vote for the prettiest town in Wyoming.  When in town walk up the public trail to the summit of Round top, it only takes 10 minutes but the view is wonderful.
