Wanted to Borrow: Kilt
« on: September 21, 2012, 10:10:39 PM »
Hey all,

I've recently been made aware of a charity called Kilted to Kick Cancer.  Though I'm not quite set financially to drop several hundred dollars on a kilt, I was wondering if, by chance, someone in north east Wyoming (Newcastle area) had a kilt they'd let me borrow.

Let me know if you have any leads.

Thanks!

I'll go halves with you, Jim.  We saw a horse-hair kilt at a dedication ceremony, this week,
that was serious business and inspiring.

Liberty is “Stolen” by your own signature. Find the adhesion contracts and deal with them.

Wow, that sounds great.  I have a friend who had a grand kilt.  It was in the ballpark of $800, but it had over 9 yards of tartan in there!

Hey guys-not sure, but I think the cost involves doing research about the family tree as much as the cloth and it is not cheap.
If you could come up with a simple pattern, perhaps some of us that sew could make you one.  You have to do the research though as we sewers are too busy!!! :o  ~W~

Funny--I just happen to have a book---"The Clans and Tartans of Scotland".  Its a little gem of a book as it gives a history of each clan and then a print showing the tartan pattern for each clan.

Just an FYI.

I might have to check that out.   I've done some research myself, but it would be cool to browse other sources!

I'm a Buchanan (on my mother's side) and have been to the Family Land near Loch Lomon.

Kilt & Kit can me frightfully expensive depending on what you get. (I went to a Kilt Shop in Glasgow... Ouch.  May as well have been Brooks Bros.)

Great Kilts are almost never worn.  "Prince Charlie" cuts are for Formals.

It's not too hard to pleat your own kilt if you have the time and sufficient yardage of Wool Plaid. (Instructions abound)

But you still need a sporran, knee socks, and appropriate foorwear (shirts/tunics can vary greatly).

mjolnir, have you checked eBay (filter for mens clothing)?  Lots of kilts, hose, shirts, accessories for reasonable prices.  No doubt, most are not the real deal, but unsure if that's required for your purposes.

Kilts can be rented online.
Just search "kilt rental"
