Interested in more information!
« on: January 15, 2008, 10:58:54 PM »
Hello, my name is Steve. I currently live in Idaho and have come across your organization somewhat by accident. I had been doing some self study on politics and through a series of linked articles came across one regarding various types of migration. One of the types mentioned was political migration and your organization along with others were cited as examples. So I continued my reading and became very interested in the idea of joining in a community of politically like minded individuals. So I am very interested in finding out more about your organization and what it is doing locally there in Wyoming. One small criticism I feel I must make is that your web-site, your primary advertisement to the world, is not very informative. The statement on the front page that ?We are too busy to update our site? then having the top articles on the page being dated from last year is woefully insufficient in my opinion. Some of the information that I am, and probably others, are looking for are:
A) How successful have you been in your recruiting efforts? How many people are in Wyoming and how many have agreed to move at some point?
B) What is your organization doing? Such as what are the bills in your State legislature that you are concerned about? Which do you wish to support, and which ones do you wish to warn constituents about?
C) What have been your organizations successes? Did you manage to garner enough support to get a bill passed, or enough opposition to get a bill stalled?
D) What have been your organizations failures? Why would you want to state your failures? Simple! To make the case for why you need more support from like minded people in joining your efforts!
These are just a few of the things I was able to think of right now. I?m sure I will have more later, but if anyone could give me some insight, it would be greatly appreciated.
In the interest of full disclosure, I have also researched and visited the Free State Project in New Hampshire. I found them to be a very well organized group with a lot going for them. The only problems I had with them was with the location in the North East, and the cost of property there. I like the Idea of Wyoming being in the West, and better property ownership prospects. Also, I would not be able to commit immediately as I have a child in school here and would have to wait for him to graduate before considering a move. Thanks in advance for your reply(s) Steve.

Steve, the best way to get to know us better is to read as much as you can on the forum here. All the questions have been answered many times. The original website isn't updated much because all of the "action" is here on the forum, though there have been plans to maintain the other.

I'm sure others will post here as well.

One of the most important things to address in your questions is that of "organization." The FSW, as an organization, pretty much isn't one. The whole purpose of it, really, is to recruit like minded people to move to Wyoming and maintain mutual friendships/assistance where possible. What people do, politically and otherwise, once they get here has nothing to do with the FSW organization. We have no "officers," formal business meetings or any of the other trappings of the usual organization.

The FSW, as such, does not engage in any political action at all. We do not publish our numbers or much personal information, most of us being very private individuals.

So, welcome and take a good look at the forum.  ML

Steve,
All kidding aside, it is indeed true that we are not a "formal" organization, but rather just a group of (somewhat) like minded freedom loving people. We're a self help group, perhaps a "mutual aid society"? We meet up with people who come to visit and extend a welcoming hand. We give out useful infor regarding jobs, real estate companies we've dealt with, and give people a taste of the political climate. We sometimes help people move in when they arrive. I have been on both ends of that aspect, both receiving help and later giving help. We're all over the state and many are still out of state with plans to move within a year or two.

Indeed, we have no officers and no dues and no formal agenda or timetable. We chat a lot on the forum and meet other folks that are a reasonable distance away. Most of my friends here in WY are FSW members and they have helped me out as well as me helping them. That's what friends are for, especially liberty minded ones!

That's my take on it . . .

You guys are sick. Sick!  :D

Steve, yes we have a much different character than FSP. We have our own lives to live, and generally are not into organization per se. That is, much like the rest of Wyoming!

I guess you could look at us this way. We present information, and an idea (moving toward freedom), and a ready-made set of initial contacts for people who have the initiative to make the move. It's up to the potential movers to supply the rest. We aim to have people fit in to their local communities when they get here.

We also have get-togethers now and then. That's the fun part.

Politics? We've had little impact so far. There just ain't enough of us to turn things around at the moment. Maybe that would change in time, but the good thing in the meantime is that the hand of government is generally lighter here than most places, and the culture is one of "mind your own business" so that's likely to continue - no matter what the legislature does. I think we had an effect in Crook County though.

Sorry it has been so long before replying. I just wanted to say thanks for the information (some of) you have given, and wish all of you and your non-organization the best of luck.  I will continue reading and gathering information from other threads in the forum as suggested. ;D
Thanks, Steve.

It doesn't seem that we gave Steve much of an answer. There is no easy "click through" site that really makes the case as far as I know. Wading through a lot of forum posts isn't going to really encourage some. However, the FSP gave a really good synopsis of why Wyoming is a great state for a freedom-minded migration:

http://www.freestateproject.org/archives/state_reports/wyoming1
http://www.freestateproject.org/archives/state_reports/wyoming2

(you will have to cut and paste these links in your browser window)

FSW continues to grow every year. Provided members can still arrange an annual summer event, it will likely continue. Regarding info. on political matters in WY, I would ask of the more politically minded individuals, and those working in political parties, in addition to the source of info. in the threads here.
