Hello FSW
« on: December 04, 2010, 08:16:17 PM »
I've been reading this forum for well over a year now, and have been wanting to register to join and chime in with the good folks here at FSW. I was very happy to find the FSW, especially after reading some of BOSTON's many books.

My new FSW "screen name" will give you a bit of a hint about of me, my personal character and constitutional beliefs.  Please make no mistake. My wife and I are NOT your typical, for a better word (as punned by one of your members)  "Coastie" (New Yorker?) looking to come out to live in Wyoming to change things (your local laws/government, customs, thoughts/beliefs, traditions/lifestyles,politics, etc, etc.). On the contrary, my wife and I want to help to preserve these things that make WY what it is. Unlike NY and east / west coast socialist / progressive democratic liberals, my wife and I are both freedom/liberty loving Patriots who are sick and tired of the US government imposed "social(ist) justice" and other tyranny being shoved down our throats, especially here in the liberal/Fabian-progressive/Democratic socialist "welfare state" of New York. I have decided to "Vote with my feet" and get the heck out out of this hell-hole state.

I was born and raised in New York City back in the days when, believe it or not, family values, respect for others, religion and the sense of "neighborhood" were all strong.  Needless to say that things have changed.  Now that the kids are grown and gone, and I've recently retired, my wife and I wish to per sue and live a simpler and quieter self-sustaining lifestyle in a State with other like-minded freedom loving people. We know it wont be an easy "cultural" transition, but we are not afraid and are willing to make whatever changes are necessary to become good neighbors and citizens of a local WY community.

We are now actively planning on making the move out to WY as soon as possible.  Our first trip to WY a few years back was the "typical tourist" thing in the Yellowstone/Yosemite area.  Over the past several years we have traveled around and checked out many different possible retirement areas including AZ, ID, UT, NM, WA, OR and even some parts of MT.  A few months ago my wife and I drove back out from NY to WY driving around pretty much of the entire state checking out the different areas to determine where it would be best to "settle."  We liked what we saw and the people we spoke with.  In fact, many good WY residents approached us and initiated conversation after seeing our vehicles's bug-covered bumper and NY license plate.  My wife and I have pretty much fell in love with WY. We especially enjoy the lack of crowds, traffic and people who don't "generationally" live on the government welfare/handout teat.

We plan to drive back out again in the spring of 2011 when we put our current home on the sales market. We will look at a few properties seen on the internet that we have some interest in, and talk with a few realtors.  Except for the cold weather, WY seems to be a best fit for what we are looking for.  We considered MT, but from what I have read in several blogs many of the MT born residents up there are hostile to "outsiders."   Personally speaking, I am not looking for, or want, any hassles with any of the locals or (especially) the local LEO, so, as we say in NY, "Fuh-get uh-baht it."

Hopefully we will get to WY before the "Schumer Hits The Fan."  I've worked in some of the toughest ghettos of New York City during several major electrical blackouts, and let me tell you folks, once the lights go out it is not pretty.  I can only imagine what would happen when the real SHTF happens!  I don't want to be anywhere in (or near) a major city when the Golden Hordes start to move. I believe it is only a matter of time, and the time is drawing closer fast.

Like other "newbies" of this forum my wife and I will have many questions about WY. I kindly ask for your patience and your assistance with my questions.  Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have.  Hopefully I will get to meet some of you folks one day soon.

Thanks.

Welcome. And if you're used to New York winters Wyoming can't be that much worse. Might even be better in some of the areas.

Welcome! Looking forward to talking more with you. If you haven't read elsewhere in the forum, I grew up in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, PA. Wyoming is the best move we have ever made!

Hi Stratispho. It depends on exactly where in NY state you live. In upper NW NY by Niagara Falls near Lake Ontario and Canadian Border, it is brutal cold and lots of snow (similiar to Wy?), while down south in NY City Metro area it can get cold, but not brutal.

Looking forward to talking with you and everyone here at FSW. Thanks for the welcome.

Horatio Alger and (to a lesser extent) Ayn Rand have written stories that suggest New York was at one time a place of hope and reward for those who were honest and earnest.

In my area, four vehicles in one minute is "heavy traffic".  Except for a couple weeks during the bikers' "rally", when they are as thick as flies on turds.  Most everyone here has some kind of job, and the term "hard worker" is really a form of praise.  The firefighters and EMS (EMT crew) are all volunteers (and I served two years as a volunteer EMT).  Anyone who says that fire and EMT services need to be funded by taxes is a liar and just plain stupid.

Huh?  I went to the NJ / NY area a few times on business when it was cold and snowy.  I think the most interesting was around 1993 when my hotel could not keep their parking lot clear and I had to wait a day before I could get out and get to business.  NJ and NY weather can be wet, biting, numbing cold.  Wyoming cold is nowhere near that.  Even on the few days (in the last five years) when it was twenty below, I was fine going out to work because the air was dry.  Wyoming at any sub-zero temperature is better than Chicago at freezing temps.

Maybe I disagree with their stupid generalizations.  But I understand their desire to keep out the fascist turds.

Thanks rjhodges for your reply.  I appreciate your comments, but to be honest, I cant understand if some of them are a "personal dig" or meant purely as an observation/opinion.  In any case, hope that we can chat again. Thanks (?)

Welcome, FDNYLiberty. I hope you will come to visit us here in the NE part of Wyoming as soon as possible. We have a fairly large FSW community here and very much enjoy having folks come to visit because so many of them wind up staying! :) Our spring Jamboree in June is an excellent opportunity to meet FSW folk from all over the state, as well as many who are in the process of moving or just newly considering it. Great way to network, as is the forum here.

Looking forward to talking with you here, and meeting you as soon as you can get here.

Welcome to FSW FDNYliberty. "Schumer hits the fan"? "Golden hordes"? I follow Johns blog and am on their site too. Same name. Winter is fun here. Many folks spend years planning their visits to Wyoming to ski in the finest powder on earth.

Yer right. Time is getting very short. All the signs are out there. Mostly the fedgovcoinc is giving away their own insights by the proliferation of the TSAs screening methods to just about every venue you can think of.

I mean no insult to you or your family.

I suspect that many in Montana are weary of seeing wealthy city people moving in and bringing along their city mental disease.  It may be unfair if they generalize that to a dislike of any "outsider", and when that brush stupidly applies to good folk too.

HI Biathlon,

No we do not ski, hunt or fish, but we are willing to learn! :) Especially fishing and hunting.

Thanks for your welcome, and glad to hear you are on JWR's blog.

Hi MamaLiiberty,

Thanks for your warm welcome. I have been reading your posts with interest for the longest time.  You sound like a real character, and I look forward to talking with you on this forum.

My wife and I discussed the June get-together, but we have travel plans for early May that will include trip back across country to see our daughter and then head back into WY before driving back to NY by end of month.  The June Jamboree sounds great, and I hope that me and the missus will soon become a regular attendee in the future.

Thanks for your welcome MaMa. :)

Hi rhodges,

No insult taken......

You are correct that "painting with a broad brush" is not the right thing to do.  I am FAR from being a big city mentality liberal (or fascist), and I do not consider myself a "wealthy city person."  Hell, I worked for a living since I was about 15.  No "silver spoons" were ever in this mouth.

Some of the nicest people I met and/or know are FAR from being "wealthy."  I measure "wealth" in many other ways than money.

Looking forward to chat with you again on this forum.

@FDNYLiberty:
There are folks up here too that don't like "outsiders" or newcomers. I think that's typical of many people.
Lots of the locals here are cattle families. Been here for a couple or 3 generations. Cattle ranching is their life. They're used to wide open spaces. They don't like the "sell outs" that have placed their ranches on the market and divided the land into tiny parcels (40 to 80 acres) and allowed people like me to move in. They are used to allowing their cattle to roam on other private property and don't like the idea that I call the sheriff and charge people with trespassing if they come up here dropping off or picking up cattle.

Other than that, everyone here is great. Just a few families.

We really like the idea that even the government workers (DMV, assessor, treasurer, clerk, deputies) are as nice as can be and there is never a delay to get service at their windows. Nobody has "an attitude" up here. When I voted last month nobody blinked an eye at my openly carried handgun.

Kids can roam and play on their bikes in the summer without a nervous parent watching over them.

Often, when we are driving on I90 between Gillette and Spearfish, SD, we see NO cars in front or behind us. We don't even use our turn signals anymore unless there should actually be someone who would actually see it.

Crook County has ZERO traffic lights. There is no such thing as the excuse (I would have been here on time but the traffic was heavy!"

Well, that's my story and I'm sticking with it . . .

Mac,

Thanks for that 'story', LOL!  Yes, I can relate to what you are saying about the "sell-outs", but the question is, "who do you blame" -  the sell-outs who sold their ranches, or the person who buys a parcel?

I though there was "one" traffic light in downtown Hulett??? Drove thru there in September. Seems like the new "golf community" on the heil adjoining the airport there is going to spell trouble like it did in Jackson Hole with (liberal) California money folks coming in.

Nice to meet ya Mac. Looking forward to more conversations.
