Recent Gasoline Prices
« on: April 15, 2011, 08:05:26 AM »
Hi Folks,

Just seen on TV that the "average" price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline (as of 4/14/2011) is now $3.81. They said that this price was the "average" price  everywhere across the USA EXCEPT in Wyoming.

What are you folks paying in different parts of Wyoming?

When I went to the gas station here in my town (suburb outside of NY City), and I was paying $4.04 regular unleaded. In New York City it is anywhere from $4.15-$4.39 a gallon.

Just curious. Thanks.

Yesterday at the Shell station in Campbell County - non-ethanol was 3.49 a gallon, 85 octane.

This is the most useful website for gasoline prices I've ever seen:
http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_gastemperaturemap.aspx

I use it before I set out on any trip to decide which area to stop at.
As you can see, Wyoming is the "greenest" state! This is the only time I want to be "green".

You can zoom in, or double click on any area to see the individual gas station locations and prices.

What's really obvious from this map is the political boundaries and the prices. If the price of gas in any area was simply caused by its proximity to oil fields, refineries, or transportation, the state boundaries would not be obvious. The prices would slowly change with distance across the land. But look at Kalifornia. Sticks out like a big red thumb. Yet they drill for oil off the coast and much of the Alaskan Pipeline crude comes to Kalifornia for refining.

A picture says 1K words (modern phrasing).

Thanks for this great site, Mac. I didn't realize you could double-click for prices because the first few times
you click it only zooms. I see you have to keep zooming to get to the local prices.

Las Vegas - 3.89
Reno - 3.91
NorCal - 4.05 (Ouch)

Marc Faber, Gerald Celente and, from a different perspective, Lindsey Williams are
predicting $175 - $200/barrel oil by September of next year. That would translate into approx. $8/gallon gas.

Time to lock in the price of airline tickets and expect surcharges on trucking and the resulting trickle
down of rising prices as a result. I hear one airline is going to start issuing tickets whereby the gas
component can be paid on the day of departure.

I agree. The same can be said for "state and federal tax" built into every gallon sold here. Here is NY, its HUGE.

There are a few curious things though.  Like Missouri.  It's yellow and orange around St Louis, but green around Kansas City.  What's with that?

County and regional taxes, typically used to subsidize mass transit. :(
