Maybe the North Central Airlines DC-3's I flew in 1966-1967 didn't get the tender loving care that they could have had if they had been flown only occasionally.  The creaky old machines I flew were in the air every day, had to keep them going to keep the air fare money coming in.

I did some work on a project that was to make lighter more powerful radial aircraft engines. We started with a 3500 HP R-3350, lightened it up by 25% and got more than 9000 HP with the same 3500 hour overhaul. And this was with using diesel fuel. :D
No leaks either.
