Art of Liberty
« on: August 09, 2012, 11:46:10 PM »
The soul feeds on more than words.
When the talk stops but the silence can't go on . . .

Rodeo posters, old photographs, movie clips, comedy sketches,
spoken word, storytelling. . . what've you got?

I'll kick it off with Willie Nelson's "Gravedigger".

And one from Shawn Colviin singing a favorite Tom Waits song, "Hold On":

Music's only one thing.  What else?

Rodeo poster…

My favorite, by far, souvenir from my recent Wyoming trip is a rodeo poster.

Check out the link.

Hulett was sold out so I picked up the 2011 Black Hills print.

The artist is amazing, and works from his studio in Hulett, at the antiques store on the corner across from the aptly named “Corner Store” on 24.

I got a signed print and a great conversation with his family for $20.

That…is the Art of Liberty to me!

Wonderful stuff!
It's not that people are dumber, it's that stupidity used to be more painful.

Holy Smokes, that guy is terrific!  It takes a while for his pictures to load since
he probably can't bear to cut them down to web size.

And all this time he's been right there in Hulett. . . . .geez.. . . .glad you
found him on your trip!

Terence,

He only does one poster a year. The entire poster is a copper etching, I mean, how many people still do this? He said he snuck into an etching class during college to learn it. They moved out to Wyoming I think he said about 10 years or so ago. He estimated the time involved to create them at about 4-6 months!

Extraordinary.  I predict something from this talented artist is going to make it into our house!

Here's 75 covers from Liberty Magazine.
http://www.libertymagazine.com/art.htm

I made up the term "Art of Liberty" and a web search shows one
or two references to the term though nothing serious.  It would make a good
name for a T-shirt and/or logo company.

Enjoy the magazine covers. . . .

Born in Philadelphia with every relative I ever heard about. . .

The first musical memory of my dad was around
this Elton John live Soul Train performance (On a Heathkit TV he
soldered in the garage) of "Philadelphia Freedom".

Note: John belts it out with no song track and a LIVE mic, unheard of today!

Parse the lyrics and the song is still inspiring . . .

Some lyrics from Liberty. Performed by the Grateful Dead, written by Robert Hunter.

Saw a bird with a tear in his eye
Walking to New Orleans---my, my, my
Hey, now, Bird, wouldn't you rather die
than walk this world when you're born to fly?

If I was the sun, I'd look for shade
If I was a bed, I would stay unmade
If I was a river I'd run uphill
If you call me you know I will
If you call me you know I will

 Ooo, Freedom
 Ooo, Liberty
 O... Leave me alone
to find my own way home
to find my own way home

Say what I mean and I don't give a damn
I do believe and I am who I am
Hey now Mama come take my hand
Whole lotta shakin' all over this land

If I was an eagle I'd dress like a duck
Crawl like a lizard and honk like a truck
If I get a notion I'll climb this tree
or chop it down and you can't stop me
Chop it down and you can't stop me

...

Nice tune.  Would've never found that without an Atom.  Here's the
music to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKYqIOh2Kcg

Here's one for Tuesday:

Not a night goes by
(That) I don't dream of wandering
Through the home that might have been
I listened to my pride
When my heart cried out for you
Now everyday i wait again
In a house that might have been.. . .

Enjoy!

Neil Young, "Here We Are in the Years"

Time itself is bought and sold.
The spreading fear of growing old
Contains a thousand foolish games
That we play.

While people
planning trips to stars
Allow another boulevard to claim
A quiet country lane
It's insane.
