Best and Worst "Run" States

Wyoming comes out #2, behind North Dakota.
CA is dead last of course.

This is a financial comparison of debt, unemployment, deficits, housing prices, wages, and education, not about freedom, climate, or scenic beauty.

North Dakota has an excellent 'free' banking system.  If WY is #2, now, it would surely
be #1 on this list with a similar banking system.

But the same can be said of any state that depends on "outsiders" for their goods or services. Take my old home state of NV for instance. One could say that they "export" their tax burden elsewhere and that is why there's no state income tax. It's not the locals that pay for flights, hotels, and the gambling tax, but others.

It's always good to tax someone else!  >:D
In fact, Las Vegas came up with a clever additional tax while I lived there that taxed non-LV residents MORE than local people just to make sure the tax increase passed (hotel room surtax). Clever.

All hotel/room tax is an "exported" tax to those who don't live in the area.

But your point is taken in that there is no shortage of government funded "projects" in this state. We are not as frugal as it would appear.

Wyoming also has a lodging tax; they've tapped that keg too. Free government stuff with no pain, what's not to like? Until you buy something not made in your state, or travel outside it...  ::)

All states play that game; it's just that Wyoming is particularly good at it, while those in government like to act "conservative". I will say one thing though, at least the legislature had the self-restraint to take some of that money flowing in and put it in the mineral fund, with interest (or is it dividends?) from that fund making up a significant portion of their yearly budget. Most other states would have spent it all immediately, and then some. So maybe the title of "best run" has some validity. Fortunately for the Wyoming legislature, the bar is very low.
