Big Brother's little helper?
« on: July 24, 2016, 04:06:08 PM »
I went to the movies this weekend and I'm not happy!

I went to go to the new movie about Hillary but it was sold out. Instead I went to the Start Trek movie and purchased a ticket for a later showing of Hillary's America. One of the reason's I wasn't to bothered by this is because the theater I went to has installed a bar in their waiting area. They took out all the children's games. So between the shows I sit down and order a drink. The bar tender asks me for ID, which is a little surprising because I'm over 50 but whatever. He takes my driver's license, walks over to the register and SCANS IT in what looks like a credit card reader. So I start taking to him. Does anyone ever object to you scanning ID's? (No) What if I gave you my passport? (It scans them as well.) Has anyone EVER said "you can look at my ID but not scan it?" (No) What if they did? (I don't know, I would have to ask the manager.) When I expressed my concern about being on someone's database he told me it's not linked up to any government database. When I replied "Yet" he just shrugged.

I'm I out of line for being upset, both with Carmike Cinemas for doing this, and everyone else for not giving a shit?

Your ID is going into some kind of database. I would also be upset that someone would record my ID details without my permission. A couple times at Walmart, the cashier demanded that they put my birth date into the computer for buying booze. And my response was to put my items back in the cart and go to another cashier. One old fart said he was required to do that, always. (Liar.)

I don't mind them seeing my ID, even though I must look well over 40. I do object to them tracking me.

If their liquor buyers were evenly distributed between 21 and 66 (just assume for a moment), that 45 year span would give more than 16,000 unique birthdays. The city has a population just over 10,000. Divide by some number to get the number who shop at Walmart. Statistically, the odds are very high that they can identify me just by my birth date.

Pretty creepy.  Since this is still a nascent policy,
folks need to quickly and loudly object.  That'll likely at least buy us some time.

The old fart surely was around for WW2, so after telling him off, I gave him a Sieg Heil! salute to remind him that he was siding with Hitler.

I constantly get this probing  :P  at checkout lines, asking various questions of me. I always refuse, and they never get bent out of shape for it, or refuse to sell me something. I also use cash most of the time.

Businesses, especially big corps, love databases. But we don't have to cooperate. Just get in the habit of refusing all such requests.
