Motorcycle Trip to Wyoming - meet up w/ FSWers?
« on: July 05, 2006, 03:08:11 PM »
I'm finalized on plans to visit Wyoming with five friends via motorcycle in about two weeks.  It's a short trip from Portland/Vancouver area to Wyoming and back, just mostly to see the sights.

Three of us are familiar with the FSW and the other three are not.   This won't be the trip to do any house hunting or anything, but I thought as long as I'm there I'd love to meet up with any FSW people.   My favorite ideal location would be Thermoplous on Wed. July 19 for lunch.   I added Thermopolous to the itineary as it's one of Boston's selected locations.   Time didn't allow making it all the way to the eastern ones.

The other possible date for meeting would be the 17th evening or anytime on the 18th in Jackson.

Anyway, I'm sure it's a bit of a shot in the dark but you happen to be in one of those locations on those dates and would like to see some nice bikes and chat over a sandwhich or something... give me a ping.

Thought I'd 'bump' this one time to see if anyone is in Thermopolous and would like to have lunch.   I'll be leaving tomorrow so if I don't hear from anyone today it won't be possible for me to see later responses.

Geez, I hope someone PM'd him. Hate to think he's going there with no one to stop and have a beer with. I guess we're a little thin, that part of the state...

Let's see...
motorcycles....
Wyoming....
two weeks from now.....

And you're not going to the eastern side of the state?  For example maybe something like...........

Sturgis?

Come on, Crook County is right in the middle of all the crazy motorcycle action!  It'll be a little early for the official Sturgis events, but there'll still be a lot of motorcycles and stuff starting late July, early August.

Nope, not going to Sturgis.  In fact I'm back in Vancouver, WA now from my trip.  I did successfully make it to Thermopolis and had a excellent lunch at "One Eyed Jacks" bar in town.    It was interesting to see that part of the state.  We came up from the southern end, starting in Jackson.

Hot Springs is one of the three target counties that Boston identified.   It is mostly a desert county.  Thermopolis is not a very big city, but it's the biggest in the county.  I think population is around 4,000. (?).   Interesting that the climate is more a desert climate than forests.   There is a deep rock canyon just south of town that the main highway goes through.  It was a dramatic and beautiful part of the ride.   The river seems like a popular destination for locals when the heat hits 100 degrees, as it did when we were there.   As is the large reseviour near Shoshoni, just outside the county.

An interesting aside is that the Wind River Indian Reservation covers a significant portion of the county, and surronds the largest nearby city, Riverton, which is in an adjoining county.

In fact much of the land in the area is either FedGov or Indian.  This is an interesting map: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/united_states/fed_lands_2003/wyoming_2003.pdf, though it lacks county boundaries.

Anyway, sorry I missed local FSWers on my travels, but it was great to see parts of Wyoming, drag five friends along, and, as mentioned, the burgers at the One Eyed Jacks were great.

Here's a quick-and-dirty county overlay of that map you posted:

Good map,  For those who don't know, if you notice the bottom quarter of the map, from the west to about Laramie, shows a "checkerboard" of ownwership. This is the land grant that the Feds gave the Union Pacific as incentive to build the railroad. Every other section of land for twenty miles on eather side of the rails were given to Union Pacific.  Occasionally the company sells these lands as is evident in the eastern part of the state.   Miles

Darn! We ended up going to Thermopolis on the 19th, took our friends to Star Plunge to swim and then went to the Safari Club at the Holiday Inn for lunch.  That was their last day visiting us and we hadn't planned to go to Thermopolis until Tuesday.    I wish I had known sooner where you were going to be dining.    We're only 45 minutes from there, maybe next time.    Glad you had a good and safe trip!
