The cost of moving (BIG $$$$!)
« on: July 11, 2006, 09:12:10 AM »
So, I've been checking around, and what some of the truck rental companies want to charge me to borrow their truck for a while... is outright ridiculous. Ryder, Pennske, Budget, etc... all those guys.

Looking at anywhere between $2,300 - $3,000 to move my crap about 1,800 miles. That's not including something to tow my truck with.

Excuse me? WHAT?!? :o :o :o :o :o

Does anyone have any other ideas? I can make the move... though I will be severely financially stressed if I do it the rental way. Severely. As in nothing left.

I am contemplating stealing the damn truck, returning it when I am finished, with a more reasonable amount in an envelope on the front seat.

How big of a truck do you need and how soon?  I bought a 17 foot box van from U-haul last year and a 10x5x5 trailer that I used to move all my stuff.  I still have stuff in them, but once I build a garage or find some other storage they will be free for other use.  Since I have no serious plans for the moving van now, I would be open to just selling it outright too.

Ya, my 1,200 mile trip cost around $2000 inc. truck, trailer, and fuel. :-[

Not sure how much of your stuff you need right away, but the rates are a lot cheaper in fall/winter.

Well.. you could just start by bring up only what you need to live and make enough money ... then save up and go back and get the rest.  I'd rather do that than spend everything I have bringin everything up here.

Well, ?I had hoped to take it all with me. I have a multitude of tools, tool boxes, job boxes, engine lift, welder, appliances (refrig, washer&dryer, chest freezer), gun safes, cold weather work clothing, etc, etc, etc. I would be able to do without the appliances, but not the tools or cold weather gear... I need to make a living.

But...

My timing problem is this: My main storage facility (that is, my parent's house... ?:D ) will be unavailable, as in gone in October. I really can't leave anything behind, as storage fees in the area are comparable to rent for a small apartment... I can't financially do it.

This haul has to come with me. I don't have the time or the wealth to sell it for pennies on the dollar, to buy it again at full price once I get out there.

I'm still looking around for truck deals, I'm not all that encouraged by what I've seen in the totals column for the rental fees. I'll find a way though.

EDIT: I don't mean to come across as a whiner... I am moving, that's all there is to it. I will be just a bit poorer than I expected, which I am understandably unhappy about... though that will be temporary. I plan on working hard to fill my coffers (so I can empty 'em again buying tools and ammo  :D ) again.

A suggestion - rent a Suburban with a trailer hitch and unlimited miles, then rent a U-Haul trailer, then make a round trip so you don't get hit with one-way fees.? Then drive your car filled with the rest of your stuff that wasn't disposed at a yard sale or the city dump.

Well now, it turns out the family went behind my back... and took up a collection to help me out... which I find embarrassing... but, I'd be in a spot if I didn't accept the help. I guess I have more than a few people out here "rooting for my team" so to speak. I was surprised at the response! The collection takes enough "sting" out of the rental fees to make it easier on me.

All in all it's not any cheaper, just a little less of my $$, and a lot less hassle - like doing the round trip thing... which I would be doing if I had not unexpectedly received family support in this.?

Thanks for the responses.

Now, I'll be sitting in my own Chateau d'Slappy (once again) in 1 month! Am I excited? You bet!? ;)

We are owned by our possessions.  :)

Some person could make money by getting a big ugly old truck or bus and renting it out to movers, seems like. I mean within FSW. Folks in the Montana group are in the same boat.

Leave the appliances behind. Unless you are personally attached to them.  :)

Take multiple trips.

See about train transportation, esp because it sounds like your stuff is heavy.

My Dad moved his family (wife and 5 kids) from Wisconsin to near San Diego, in a 1957 Ford station wagon, hauling the smallest available U-Haul trailer. Just a little perspective.

<later, after your post came in>
I'm glad your family is doing what families are good for.  :)

I made several trips, hauling stuff each time.  There were four of us, setting up two households.

Two times, we borrowed a 26' trailer from a friend.  On one trip I hauled a 14' trailer from U-Haul, one way for 700 miles and the cost was under $200.  The big stuff I shipped via freight.  They came to my house and gave me a quote (flat fee) and when I accepted, they picked it up and put everything in storage at no additional cost.  When they had a route that went by Wyoming they shipped it out and let me know it was coming.  They did the lifting and moving and nothing was damaged or broken.

They picked up my stuff in January and delivered it in April.  It worked perfectly for me as I was getting my house in Minneapolis ready to sell and was still doing work on the house in Wyoming.

The cost was high ($2,000) but worth it.  No hidden charges and it was all really big, heavy pieces including a 1,500 lb. upright piano.

I also did a lot of sorting, tossing, donating before I left Minneapolis.  Actually I have continued in Wyoming as I simplify my life.

Have you checked out ABF U-Pack Moving?  http://www.upack.com/?nlnk=foot
A friend of mine had no problem getting one of their trailers delivered to Cody.

When I moved from Kalifonia, the costs were about the same. I finally found that loading my truck up and pulling the largest Uhaul tariler I could get, would cost a fraction of the cost for the big truck. I think the trailers were going for ~$300 for a week. You said storage was high where you are currently located. How about 50-100 miles away? It wouldn't be that hard to move most of your stuff there and it's convienent for a visit back.

Also I mailed some things. Large lightwieght items aren't that expensive. I also mailed a lot of books. You can mail media mail and its fairly cheap.

I can not remember whether I previously commented on this forum or another, however this will bear repeating.?

If you can find some Amish folks and ask them who they get to move their stuff.? They know who to get it done cheap.? Those people are moving all the time.? They will close a biz and just start up again at the new place.? They make it look like no big deal.

Well, I've made it to Douglas.? 8)

The move went smoothly for the most part. Other than worrying about the severely overloaded truck, and about $700 spent on gas... I made it o.k. and I'm happy to be away from the east coast. It's as if a great weight has been lifted from my shoulders. Now I can concentrate on getting myself established here.?

So... I suppose I should be changed to "Member, in Wyoming" now.? ;D

After a bit of practice at the range here in Douglas, and a few more 210+ scores on the Fred's AQT, I will happily call myself a Wyoming Rifleman. I came well supplied with AQTs if anyone would like to join me.
