It is about time that I post and say hello.
« on: August 01, 2006, 09:33:42 PM »
Please let me begin by saying hello to you all.? This is truly an honor to be in such amazing company as all of you.? I hope my words do justice to my thoughts and intentions.? Please read on.?

I am not certain where to begin because I have so much to say.? I have been lurking on FSW's site for a short while now, and through my reading I have solidified many of my already strong feelings and thoughts of what it means to be truly free.? I can tell you this much for sure:? I absolutely must find my way to Wyoming soon... however, I will be facing some very tough resistance.

Back in 2002 I started a new job and met a truly great friend.? You all know him here as Sean Galt.? This chance meeting has been the equivalent to adding white gas to an already hot flame in terms of my political and social awareness.? I believe what got me started were two things I found in Sean's office.? One, on his desk was a copy of Molon Labe.? The other was a note pinned to his board that asked, "Who is John Galt?"? Of course I had to ask... dammit.

Now that I have read Molon Labe, Atlas Shrugged, and several other key texts I have found myself in a whole new mindset.? I have also adopted a new political stance which holds very true to the Libertarian and Constitution ideologies.? However, I really don't like the word Libertarian because of the old baggage it carries with it.? I would prefer to find a different way of saying all that I believe in a word or two....I just have not found it yet.?

Where all this leaves me now is something I am proud of, yet frustrated and fearful all at the same time.? I'll explain.?

I am happily married and have a 21-month-old daughter who means the whole world to me.? I currently work as a pharmaceutical rep in central Iowa.? Shelley and I have a very comfortable life living in a suburb of Des Moines, IA.? We are surrounded by many very loving family members who cannot get enough of our daughter.? Therein lays the problem and resistance.?

Shelley understands the problems with the country and the bankrupt political system we are trapped in.? We communicate at length about it, and the ways to escape it.? She agrees with the premise that we have lost our freedom and will not be able get it back.? She also agrees that Free State Wyoming is how and where we need to be.? Where we disagree is the urgency.?

I am ready to move to Wyoming.? I would be willing to leave as soon as we sold our house.? I'd give my 2 week notice, load the truck, pack my few guns, and head west.? I have no qualms about leaving my "comfortably numb" life here at all, so long as Shelley and Lily are with me.? I know that I'll be able to carve out a very good life for us out there.? I was born and blessed with a tremendous work ethic and more than my share of entrepreneurial skills.? Not only can I make it work... I can make it work well!!!

Shelley on the other hand is not even close to ready.? She is very close to all her extended family who live in an around central IA.? I cannot blame her.? They are wonderful people.? I believe Shelley wants things in America to get a lot worse before she'll consider making the move.? I fear how much worse and how fast things may change.? Am I being paranoid?? I don't believe so... I just want to be prepared and have acted in advance, as opposed to trying to act when it is too late.?

So, can someone please tell me?Where do I go from here?

Thanks!!
JD

Possibly something like Sean and Korey have done, buy land in the area knowing that it will be a couple years before you are able to move.  That way you at least have 'a place'.

Howdy d_j,

Welcome to the FSW Forum!  Your spirit shines and is most welcome.

A few short, easy trips to visit people in Wyoming may be just the
ticket for Shelley.  [It may make you antsy to move, and if it does,
that'll probably be something you'll have to keep control of, since
you may stimulate defensiveness in Shelley.]  Nice and easy does it.
Incremental exposure to Wyoming may be comfortable enough for
her that she may end up convincing herself ;) that it's the best thing
for her to do for herself and Lily, right away, even if she has to
drag you along .... :D

You'll likely get lots of good suggestions from others, and I hope
you can make it all work for the benefit of you and your lovely family.

Best wishes,   Lex

JD, so glad to have you here !!  Will Shelley join the forum ?  She could find some answers to many of her questions here. There are probobly other ladies here who have gone through the same  process of deciding what to do.
As was said above , if you can take some trips to Wyo. you should.
I have moved my family several times in our lives together and we always find new "family" where ever we go and always have found a way to see our relatives, athough not as often as we may have liked.

Now, where have I heard that before?  :D

Just say you believe in freedom. Best way to put it I think.

Where we disagree is the urgency.

Sounds like you are half-way there.

This is a very feminine trait. Can't blame a wife for being feminine.  ;)  When the people took to the Oregon Trail in the 19th century, from looking at the journals it's clear it was always the men who wanted to go, and the women just put up with it (in those days anyway).

What you need is to establish a comfort zone for her in Wyoming. That means, getting some friends and feeling the same sorts of feelings she gets with family and friends where you are now. Fortunately this is very easy because the FSW crowd are great people and lots of fun to be around (and Wyoming folk generally are easy to get along with). So as others have said, get out here and start visiting, going to gatherings, looking at property, looking at businesses, getting a feel for different towns. It is lots of fun! A lot easier than piling all your possessions in a covered wagon, too.  :)

My wife was also very reluctant because of family. I used the low-pressure approach over a period of years. I was always looking at properties, ranches, etc on the internet and leaving them on the screen for when she came to look at her mail.  ;) I finally put this one up there (it was for sale at the time) and she was hooked. We went out and looked at it, and she noticed how fun it was to be out there and how great the people were, so she bought it. Now she has something to play with while we are retired.

I suspect she still will spend a fair amount of time in Oregon, but in two months we are going to be Wyoming citizens!  ;D

First and foremost...thanks for the warm welcome.? I'll have to spend time in the future to get to know each of you.?

Secondly, and nearly as important.... Sean, although he is a very great and loyal friend, is more likened to a DOG sometimes!!!!? I guess that would explian his being this man's best friend and his unending loyalty.

.... C'mere boy...good boy!!? Now SIT!!? :D

I'll have to post more another night.  Sorry so brief, I have to get my work done before I can play (AKA....plan, scheme, dream, fantisize, strategize, and shoot). I know you all understand.

Take care and God Bless each of you.

Welcome here, diehl_jesse, and thanks for your post.

Not being a married fella, I've nothing really to add to the fine
advice already offered here by others.

Iowa is really not that far from Wyoming, so visits are within
a (long) day's drive.  It's not like we're all moving to Alaska...

Best of success to you in a Wyoming future!
