What we are looking for: your suggestions, please
« on: January 10, 2007, 10:13:21 AM »
Here is what we like/dislike and what we are looking for.  Please give your suggestions as to which towns in Wyoming best fit our profile.

I like:

Mountains
Trees
Warmer temps

Dislike:
Open plains
Strongest winds

So far I'm thinking of Buffalo or Sheridan areas (bear in mind I don't know much about Wyoming).

Schools aren't an issue as we homeschool.

Would like to be close to a decent-sized town so my daughter can go shopping (she's 12).  I'm a RN so I'd be looking at a hospital for employment.
Hubby's an archaeologist.  Working right now out-of-state because there is no work here for him.  He has also installed satellites, done other things.
He can pass a drug screen, great personality, great worker.
Right now they're lifting 30 lbs. all day long, his group is outworking everyone.

What are your suggestions as far as towns?  We will be renting - what are the prospects of that, I read there aren't many rentals in a lot of places.

  Thanks in advance

I would pick sheridan.  Great town.  it is closest to Billings, the great tax free shopping center.  I think it is about an hour from Sheridan.    If you are a nurse, you shouldn't have any problem with finding a job.  Wyoming is in constant need of good nurses.  Check with the BLM for archeology positions.  I know there are many places in wyoming to do archeology.   I'll look into that for you.

Sundance would be my choice. The weather is quite mild compared to other places. Lots of trees in the Black Hills!
Spearfish, SD is not very far, or you could go west to Gilette.
Anyway, that's my NSHO.

Buffalo/Sheridan are basically the same place. Work in one and live in the other. Well within range of the mountains, community college available, and plenty of opportunities. Don't know how many opportunities are up there for hubby but you should be in good shape as an RN. Real pretty country up there, just too darn many people for us. Remember, in Wyoming, anything within 30 miles is local. As far as warm temps??? Kinda SOL there. Cold is cold. Good luck, Paul Allen.

Yeah, it's kinda funny about this stuff. People have these likes and dislikes, but humans are adaptable, you know? Cold? Your blood will thicken, and there is this high-tech thing called "clothes".  ;) Another internet friend, on the WAL list, moved from Florida to Montana, and he's loving it.

For example, I grew up in nice green, forested northern Wisconsin. My Dad got a job in a town south of San Diego, and I just hated the look of it when we first moved there. And later I was stationed out in 29 Palms, right there out in the desert. Now, the desert would seem to be about the least likeable place there is, but, it kinda grows on you. Then I got to reading Edward Abbey's books, and finally understood why.

Try to have an open mind about this. While constant wind does not have a lot to recommend it, at least the mosquitos aren't bad! You just have to be smart about where you site your home (hint: in the canyons and gullies, not on the ridgetops like the California immigrants around here do).

I really don't have the words.

? You seem to have the words to be insulting - I really don't know why anyone would take the time to write a post like that - I have said SEVERAL times that I've never been to Wyoming.
? This board, and other places on the net, is where I'm getting info from - BEFORE we come out there for a fact-finding trip.
?
? Until we get there and look around for ourselves, the internet is about all we've got.

? Please just skip my posts from now on, since they trouble you so much!? ?::)

Hellzapopin, I just can not imagine there was anything in that post intended to offend anyone.? I hope you do not take any offense at my post either, it is surely not intended to offend.? It is hard to express levity sometimes w/o seeing facial expressions.? I would suggest that you ask if an offense was meant, then respond accordingly.? Please do not make an assumption of offense.? If I intend to insult, offend, ridicule or deride etc. I will make it clear.? It has been a joy to have you on the forum and many of the questions you ask are questions that others will have as well.? You gotta love the above pic of the Wyoming Wind Sock....... ;D

Well, seeing as how you didn't even write the post, how the heck do you know what the intent was?

I happen to know Outlander and I know that no insult was made.  He lives in the South West portion of Wyoming where there is nothing but open plains and MUCH wind.  There really is no reason to be so sensitive.  If anything, error on the side of grace giving people the benefit of doubt.  He put a smiley face showing a wink.  I don't think that was insulting.  If he errored at all it was in not explaining himself enough.

You need to realized that with this forum we get over and over peole who want paradise - mountains, trees, no wind, temperate climate, small town atmosphere with enough big city amenities.  I don't think that there is anywhere on earth just like that.  Wyoming (as in another thread) can be VERY harsh.  But it can also be very beautiful - even high deserts or rolling plains.  Don't miss the wide open spaces where you won't see another person for 50 miles or more.

Please don't take this personally.  Everyone here is just trying to be helpful and realistic.

Martha

I would tend to assume that he meant well, but ask, if I was concerned, if he meant to be snide.  Please assume that there is no offense intended until clearly otherwise, at least that seems to usually work for me :).

Wind is a certain thing here . Ya just gotta deal with it .
Plains ...............well , just have to deal with it .

You must learn to overcome . Wyoming is a great place . I have lived all over this country from CT. to CA . Wyoming is the best for me . Plains so I can see'm coming , mountains so theres a place to Bug Out to .

If YOU cant handle a little joke , grow some thicker skin , cause it gets hot here also .

Here's one to think about also , make sure you have a dependable car/truck . Its nothing to drive 60 miles to get some place . Winter can catch you off guard , roads close , trucks pile up on the highway , cars slide off the roads like a demo derby . ( with global warmming coming who knows ) .

I'm not sensitive.? It was rude to come onto a thread where I'm clearly seeking information, and post things that may or may not be a joke............? His little "smiley face" you mentioned is so TINY that I can't even see what expression it's making; so how am I supposed to know what it means if I can't see it?

I'm not seeking a paradise environment or I wouldn't be looking at Wyoming - to me, that's just a given.? It's pretty obvious that I'm going in with my eyes wide open, nothing I've posted on this board indicates that I'm looking for some sort of la-la land.? I know Wyoming, generally speaking; is windy.? I'd already seen the Wyoming wind sock on another site.

Everyone else has been very nice and helpful, though; so that's something.
