Welcome aboard Cameron!
Just had some relatives come back from a one year stay in New Zealand. As they just returned a few days ago, I have not had a chance to talk to them much. They are avowed socialists, so it will be interesting to see what they have to say about NZ.
To give you an idea what I'm 'dealing' with: When I asked my nephew what socialist meant he said, "Socialism, social". That's it, guess he thinks it's about being friendly to everybody

Yikes!
The words "liberal" and "conservative" have become essentially meaningless in this country, at least as applied to politicians. I wouldn't necessarily trust Rush Limbaugh's take on them.
Rush can be an interesting listen, but Paul is right, IMHO, in that liberal and conservative have various meanings in various social circles. One observation I would make is that the definitions of 'labels' like liberal, conservative and libertarian are in a constant state of flux. So, it really takes getting to know folks to understand their underlying principals.
But then, that's a good thing?
