New Here..
« on: September 07, 2008, 09:24:59 PM »
I am not currently in Wyoming, but have grown more and more interested in moving there. (Many thanks for a wonderful book: Molon Labe!)

My beloved man and I are looking at several states for our homestead. He has lived in several states and I, being a former *Military Brat*  have managed to live in 30 states. Some for a few scant months, some for a few years.I have also lived in several of those 30 since being an adult.(My favorite states were Montana, Kentucky and, you guessed it, Wyoming!)
He and I have a heavy focus on self-reliance, 2nd Amendment Rights, organic farming and off grid living.
Not a kid here...sigh...wish I was!
Currently, we are in Texas, due to his job and mine.
So...still poking about the site trying to figure out everything...

Welcome Lamb!  I just moved to Wyoming about 3 weeks ago. I moved from Florida. If you and yours are interested in living off the grid and are familiar/knowledgable about alternate energy- you may want to consider getting into the wind energy field. Lots of that here in southeast Wy. They are actively looking for a lot of help and prefer hiring stable folks- not kids. Not sure if this helps or not but thought I'd throw it out there.
Anyway- Welcome and good luck! Lots of helpful, friendly folks on this board- none of that "ego" nonsense I've seen on most other boards.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome!
(And mentioning butternut squash really hit me where I live...I LOVE butternut squash...especially stuffed with sausage and chopped apple...drooooooooooool)

To give you a perspective of what I am dealing with where I live....starting at 4:30am this morning, we had some fool wandering the neighborhood popping off rounds from a semi-auto. The police showed up...30 minutes after they were called ::)  ....and this is considered a *safe and quiet* neighborhood.
Yeah. Right. So safe and quiet that I sleep with a loaded shotgun by my bed and have five dogs (2 in front, two in back one in house) all trained to attack intruders.
I am just tired of it.
I remember so fondly my days living in Montana, in a cabin almost 50 miles from the nearest city. (The nearest city being Sheridan, by the way! I was barely above the border, lol.) The biggest threat to my  well-being was this dumb old mule deer buck that developed an unnatural attachment to one of the cows and came courtin'. Poor cow was so scared out of her wits, she stopped giving milk! (and no, I didn't shoot the buck, he was old and would have been too tough and gamey to eat...I just let him wander the fence line, poor thing)
I need to get out. It won't be for another year, due to my beloved man's employment obligations, but it will be be as soon after that year as possible.

Welcome from someone who was recently welcomed himself! I know how it feels to want to get away and not be able to do it for a while. My wife and I are in college and won't graduate until next December...but when we do...we're gone! I'll look foward to meeting you when we all get where we're going. Good luck!

Welcome, welcome......

As always I want to impress upon those  wanting to move that the sooner the better.  As the economy tanks the jobs that are so plentiful here will dry up as those who just want to eat make it here before those who want the freedom.

I know it can be tought--I moved 6 kids, 4 horse, 3 dogs, 2 cats after shutting down a business, liquidating the inventory, packing the entire house and garage by myself.  It would have been very easy to stay and wait for the right time.

I know each story has its own twists but in this case it might not have the ending you want it.  My best wishes to all that want to move.  As with others in the past we(Shawn and I) still offer our house as a place to stop off and have dinner or stay the night if necessary.

Just a thought...

Mama would be delighted to give a nice warm home (350 degrees ought to do it) to any butternut squash anyone has that they don't want. I could almost live on the stuff. LOL

There should be one homeless butternut at the very least, since a warm home was given to the bread ;) Still waiting for the skin to turn tan. We I liked it most as a soup, with roasted garlic! Would that make it more edible Danl? :D

I would go so far as to say, "There oughta be a law ag'in it......"   (As I dodge the tar and feathers  >:D)  I would have to put it in the classification with Okra!  That oughta get everyone going! ;D

Follow your recipe for butternut squash soup, but leave out any onions and garlic...instead, put in for spices 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Right before serving, fold in thoroughly(ask wifey or cooking person if you don't know what fold means in cooking terms) 1/4 cup whipped cream (no sweetener) or sour cream per serving. You can serve this hot or chilled. A dab of sour cream or whipped cream on top with a dusting of nutmeg is a nice touch.

Yeah, chubby chick that adores cooking here! I can cook gourmet novelle cuisine on a woodstove or collard greens and ham-hocks and cornbread in a gourmet kitchen. ;D No one has EVER gone hungry around me! I lived in a tent for 5 months by myself in the NC mountains from Nov til March(was homeless after marriage break-up 5 years ago), always managed to have a hot breakfast and a hot dinner.

Back to independence and freedom..
Got a bit of a question...maybe observation is a better word...

I advocate and live personal freedom to the highest degree.
I do not pay taxes (other that gasoline and sales). I have never filed a *1040* or any of those other BS IRS forms. I don't bother them, they don't bother me. I opted out before I ever got opted in. I tell all my employers I am *tax exempt*. Usually work for cash anyway.Even ran my own business on a cash only basis and was quite successful.

I drive without a gov't issued license. The car is tagged and insured but not in my name.

I do not use my SS#. (I doubt I can remember it!) If anyone asks for it, I tell them it is not necessary for that particular purpose, period. I have a bank account <shrug>, my bank gave me no problems. I used an old college i.d. and a state i.d. from another state (does not use SS# on it) that I got years ago to open my account.

Not one of my firearms is registered. It is no ones business but my own as to what and how many I own. I buy from private sellers. (Bless Texas yard sales...yes, YARD SALES!)

I have people appalled at these admissions. I have people constantly tell me "But I can't do that! What about my 401k, my pension, I have kids, what about my tax *refund*?"(actually, the belated return of funds they lent the gov't. interest free!)
My question is:
Why are you afraid? What the hell can they do to you? Put you in jail? You have already been raped or otherwise divested of most of your freedoms, why give the government even MORE control?

Sorry...bit of rant there....
