Newb with Questions

Hi all, I have been lurking for a few weeks and have been reading as much as I can on your site.  Recently I joined the forum so I can ask questions and converse with you all.  A little about me, I am 30, have a four year degree in Forest Resource Management, and currently work for the US Forest Service.  (Please don't hold it against me.)  Working for the Gov has caused me much internal conflict lately.  At least where I am at, I see way to much waste of taxpayer money.  I would love to find a job in the private sector and have been looking.  I am engaged to a fine woman who puts up with more than I think she should have to.  I like to hunt, fish, shoot, and work on vintage dirtbikes.  Recently, my brother gave me a copy of Molon Labe and Boston's Gun Bible.  I have finished them both and have passed Molon Labe around for others to read.  I have a hard time with lending out the 'Bible' though and instead show it to people and encourage them to buy it.  I think I may have sold at least 4 people on buying it.  Hopefully Boston will forgive me for passing around Molon Labe, as it is not my intent to deprive him of profit by providing it to people.  I loved the books and will soon be purchasing Hologram of Liberty. 

I will not be able to move to Wyoming any time soon, but have brought it up to my fiance.  She seems to be receptive of the idea and suggested that we go to Wyoming to visit sometime next spring or summer.  I was happy she seemed so receptive to the idea.  Today, while on the internet, I about fell out of my chair when I read the "passe comitatus" headlines.  I see this as a major problem and the real beginning of some real serious problems.  I am starting to think that maybe now would be a good time (although maybe a little late) to prepare for the worst.  If the worst was to happen, I would pack up my family and head west.  I am currently in Northern Wisconsin, and this is not the state I want to be in if things get serious.  Socialism is frighteningly appealing to many here, although they don't call it that.  My one question is, does anyone here think it would be a good idea to buy a little land in Wyoming, not so much to build on, but to have a place to go once things really do get out of hand. Maybe even just an acre or two to put a camper on or something?  Is land reasonably priced right now?  I can see a time when things really go downhill and property values in Wyoming increase as people flood to an area that still holds people with the sense to know what Freedom and Liberty really mean.  Any input on this idea would really be appreciated.  The last thing I would want to do is to have to flee to Wyoming and then look for a place to call home and be a burden on anyone else.  I look forward to getting to know you all better and listening to your ideas.  Thanks.

Not sure about your timeline but the Forest Service is looking for folks in Wyoming right now (link here)...unless of course you want to leave their employ, which in that case there are plenty of wood related jobs in the forested areas from logging to mills...check out the cities of Dubois/Pinedale/Hulett/& Sheridan.  Log Home manufacturing is out there and with the potential economic insulation of the Jackson/Cody area clientele may remain a pocket of opportunity.

However, given the dependence upon commodity housing-related materials and the low near and mid-term forecasts, I myself am looking to leave my wood background behind and become a Jack-Of-Most-Trades...unless the woody stuff comes into play on my own terms.

Thanks for the reply.  I guess I would prefer not to work for the Gov anymore.  I feel that the gov is too bloated, takes too much money, and uses it too irresponsibly.  There are very few things that private industry couldn't do better than Gov in my opinion.  What I would really like is to just be left alone, do something that I enjoy for a living that provides for my family, and have a simple life.  Molon Labe and Boston's Gun Bible really struck a cord with me.  I think that the ideas in the books have been in me for a long time, but to read the ideas put so clearly and concisly on paper really opened my eyes.  With the current state of the country, I feel as if I had better be preparing for the worst case senario.  After observing this site and reading the ideas put forth on it, I feel that Wyoming would be a perfect situation.

Perhaps better in Wyoming than northern Wis., which is closer to population centers. As a deputy sheriff I can tell you that you dont want to be near a big city in times of civil strife. I'm just saying . I was hoping to move in the summer of 2010 but may have to go sooner. I actualy know a girl from Moorcroft who lives here in Louisiana now. She can possibly tell me about the area(jobs, housing,places to go) if I wasn't such a DA I would have asked her by now.

Howdy HodakaD, Yes ,if you have some extra cash I think it would be good to buy some land. There are some good deals out there still. We are having a get together this spring so if you do make a trip out be sure to coordinate your dates. That way you can get to know some of the folks here a little better. There is a small town called Saratoga that is opening up an old saw mill again. It will be turning all of the beetle killed pine into wood stove pellets.

Welcome! I do hope you will make plans now to come visit as soon as possible. There are several clusters of FSW folks in various parts of the state, so we can manage a mini-gathering almost any time if necessary. Most of us will be glad to help, so please ask questions or for information you can't find already posted here on the forum.

There are jobs going begging here in Weston county and nearby areas. If you are willing to be flexible or learn new things, you can't go wrong. There are some nice places still available around the NE corner of the state, and the prices are good, especially compared to much of the country even with the recent collapse of real estate.

We are a long way (90 miles) from the nearest major city - Rapid City in South Dakota, but it is close enough to get the few things you might need there.

Thanks for the encouragement MamaLiberty.  I am excited to see Wyoming again.  I haven't been there since a vacation with my family in 1990.  How much does land go for in Wyoming.  I assume land in the mountains and land in the plains is vastly different in price.  Is it possible to just buy a few acres (<10)?

Although 20,000 troops by 2011 may not seem like a lot spread throughout the whole country, I think it sets a bd precedent.  Why are they needed anyway?  Seems like if the National Gaurd wouldn't have been federalized, they would be able to handle this situation to me.  Just seems suspicious that the STATE National Gaurd was sent overseas so the Federal Army could move into the state.

I wouldn't have any idea what to tell you about the price of land. It's going to vary from one county to the next, and depend on a lot of things. I'd suggest you take a look at some real estate websites to get a good idea - but remember that you can't really tell much about any of it until you are on the ground actually looking at it! The R-E folks are not real good about returning phone calls or emails here. They operate best in person and many of them do not even advertise their best deals so you have to be here to find them.

Look at the web sites to get an idea, then plan to make a trip to see for yourself. That's the best advice I can give! Here's my favorite real estate person, Vera Huber. http://www.homeplaceusa.com/ She helped me buy this place.

The 20,000 troops by 2011 was in the washington post in mon or tues paper.  That averages to 400 per state though i am sure they will not break it down like that.  In my thinking, it is obvious why they want it...........control.  And pres ele reps keep saying he is going to do stuff at "the local level".  Personally, I am very concerned this is the plan for taking guns from us.  Pray I am wrong.

This kinda surprised me. When i returned from iraq, i started talking to a bunch of other soldiers that i would run in to at gun stores and most are worried about obama taking guns, so i'm really not sure how compliant alot of the military would be at confiscating guns from people.

I found this interesting because I had just finished Boston's Gun Bible and he talks about Posse Comitatus.  There is an actual question given to Navy personal in a survey that asks if the Government bans non-sporting weapons, and people didn't comply, would they be willing to fire on U.S. citizens who refuse or resist.  Apparently, the Posse Comitatus act only applies to Army and Ariforce personel.  Navy, Marine, and Coast Gaurd personnel are exempt.  It would be interesting to see how those Navy personnel answered that survey.

I dont remember any survey like that? Thats interesting to hear though, maybe Ill look into that.

GMZ, My statement was misleading.  In BGB, Boston said the survey was given in 1994 I think.  I made it sound like it was a frequently asked question.  I thought it was interesting all the same.
