Nation of Two, Part II
« on: December 04, 2008, 02:32:47 PM »
Just a quick wave "Hello", and more to follow when I'm not playing beat the clock in the cubicle.

Name's Debra Jean, wife to Michael (MichaelNotMike on this board, and the artist previously known as ThornDaddy).  I've been listening to him read me posts, tell me stories, and extoll the wonders of Wyoming in general and FSW in particular for two weeks now, so I guess it's time I showed up firsthand.  Sounds like we're going to be hanging about.

I don't have nearly the time available online that Daddy (my name for Michael) does, but I imagine I'll throw my two cents in now and then when something gets my attention. Which y'all have, for sure.

Until again, greetings all, and thanks for being here.

MamaLiberty - You rock for not only being smart, but also kind to us newbies.

I get a friendly vibe in general on here. DJ said to me last night, "This is the first time I've seen you be active for two weeks on a web board without saying "Bleah!" (Which is what I say out loud when the usually inevitable "King daddy I've been on this board forever and you are all lowly newcommers" troll snipes at me for being me.

Though I suspect a difference might be, other than you all ARE more friendly and decent than the average bear, that on most other web boards people say things to strangers they'd never say face to face, because they'd get punched or worse. It's a little different when the stated goal is to actually not only meet, but be *neighbors*.

I like it.

Look forward to meeting you too!

Did you read how Charlie (the Calico) survived a coyote attack:
http://www.stinkfight.com/2008/01/11/had-a-tough-week/

I yelled fiercely at the coyote and the hungry beast dropped its Charlie dinner from its mouth, we rushed Charlie to the vet.

I didn't own a gun back then. If I had, and shot the coyote....in my neighborhood, the cops would have been called, come and taken my gun. (Though according to California law, if the coyote comes THROUGH YOUR WINDOW OR DOOR, you are allowed to shoot it, IN YOUR HOME.)

How considerate of them. Bastids...  But I'll bet they'd still take your guns. ALL of them. Why, you might shoot some poor criminal breaking in next time. Can't have that!

We keep our cats indoors. Always.

The world is full of coyotes.

Yup. Two-legged, and four!

I've been studying all three of our cats. I think they have much to teach about battle. Our younger pair, two Maine Coon siblings, fight and play constantly. And chase Charlie. Charlie hates it, hisses, and seeks higher ground. Charlie is much larger and could crush the squittens if she wanted, but she just runs away and complains. (We call the two younger ones "the squittens", a squitten is a mythical beast that is a cross between a squirrel and a kitten.)

I think cats can teach us many battle techniques, including barricading, waiting, patience, listening, smelling, and of course, when to attack, and when not to. Cats are "The Art of War" on four legs. And they're full of cautious-but-unconditional love, which makes the solider pure of heart, no matter what actions he needs to take.

There's a thing that Fred wrote on the Appleseed site, a test to see if you're a "solider or a cook." I think Charlie cat is a better cook. (Though she still tries to sneak out onto the battlefield, especially when she hears coyotes out the window.)

I passed Fred's written test with a score of 100%, but I think I'd probably make a better cook (or ministry of information writer / proofreader, something like that). Will keep shooting, but the wife is a much better natural shot than me.

We don't believe in reincarnation, but if we did, we'd be pretty sure she was a warrior in a previous life. It's scary how naturally all this comes to her, and how much of a better shot she is than me, even though I read and listen and have an open mind, remain teachable, and I shoot the same number of rounds as her each time, with sidearm, shotgun and now rifle.

Cindy from Appleseed noticed this too, and told Debra Jean, "Well, you can protect him if it comes down to it." We all laughed. It was funny and true.

Richard and Cindy were great teachers, with the spiritual/Constitutional parts and with the shooting part. But Debra Jean had a physical cellular memory of "having done this before" the first time she laid on the ground with a rifle and wrapped the strap around her arm. I did OK, but was later complaining that my shoulders hurt, and that it all felt unnatural to me. It will take me a lot more physical repetition to achieve muscle memory. Debra Jean had it from the gate.

Debra Jean's also a much better cook than me.

We do want to thank both Richard and Cindy for their time, generosity, and valuable wisdom. We're both looking forward to learning much more.

Gonna go study my cats' behavior now.....

D'oh!

Michael's previous post was, like many things we do, a collaborative effort. He writes the brilliance, and I do a little fluff and edit.

He asked me to be sure to thank everyone, including socalserf, for the lesson yesterday. And I goofed.

socalserf, we want to be certain to thank you for enabling us to receive the great lesson yesterday. Very much appreciated, sir.

Thank you very much!

You know anyone who has done much shooting will tell you that women are usually better students and better teachers.
My wife used to out shoot me. But I out practiced her and now have the better of her. ;)

I'm glad you had a good time.
And DebraJean, please don't call me sir.
Dude, serf, hey you, but never sir.

Hey dude serf!

Yeah, I think it's in one of Ayoob's books where he says women are generally better students, because men don't like to be told anything.

But I really am open minded about this, and grateful for good teachers. Problem probably is that I spend too much time in front of a computer.

I used to be a good guitar player, but when I pick up a guitar now, while I can still play it, it feels odd in my hands. They just want to type.

Gotta keep using my mind as much and start using my body more.

Hi Michael and Debra Jean,  :)

If you are having 'problems' with the yodies there and you have a .22 rifle just use CB caps.  They zip along quite nicely but have the sound output of an airgun.  Used to amaze my friends back in the day with just how quiet they can be... ::) ;D >:D  It goes without saying to use sensible precautions to not be unduly observed when cleaning up the neighborhood.  ::)

Both Libertymom (Renee) and I hope that you'll be able to attend this years Summer event, we look forward to meeting you both!
