Hello all,

Just registered today.  First post.  I hope the holiday season was cheery for all.

Wyoming has been on my mind for a few years.  A couple of weeks ago I discovered Boston T. Party and the FSW movement and that reignited my urge to get going.  I am a miltech/reservist living and working in Germany.  The easiest way for me to get to Wyoming is as a AGR recruiter.  10 more years of federal active service and I can retire and start a new career.  Hopefully something decent that will let me sleep at night. 

I have been torn between staying/hiding in Germany or getting back to the States.  I am newly married to a German doctor and have a newborn.  The in-laws are not pleased with a possible relocation because of all the time and money involved with medical school.  I

I just listened to Ron Paul addressing the Mises Institute and he said one thing people should not do is find a safe haven in Europe.  Of course he was referring to people with enormous amounts of money, which I am not, yet.   

Advice and opinions are welcome and requested.  Should I move my family with the possibility of my wife not practicing medicine?  Should I try to relocate to Michigan where my mother and brothers are?  Lay it on me.  Thanks.

Howdy Chris, Glad you found us. I know very little about Germany so my advise is worth very little. Maybe others here will add more. Either way it sounds like a tough decision!

Your marital happiness probably precedes most other considerations.

If she is not "on board" with a CONUS/Wyoming move, there's much less
point in relocating.  Not that you must be a hen-pecked wussbag, either. 
There's a balance between being the man of your household, and some
"Yes, Dear!" Euro-wimp.  It's up to you to discover that.

Besides, couldn't she qualify over here and still practice medicine?
We've many foreign doctors.

I'm a Senior NCO, active duty Army.

Go talk to your Senior Enlisted Advisor and ask him how to get your wife's credential's validated for the US.  If you do it throught the military, its minimal cost; if you do it on your own, its a bundle! He can't answer your question, but he can point you in the direction and make people move.

AGR tours are 3 years, then you've got to find another, or roll the one you're in over, which means you're competing with a bunch of others for the job.  If you're wanting to settle, look for a Unit Administrative position.  As a recruiter, you're going to run out of options in the 3 year tour, especially as a Marine.

I guess the question to ask is "What do you want?" and only you can answer that.  Once you've decided, do it and dont look back.

Boston, that is hilarious that you refer to the "Yes, Dear!" Euro-wimp.  I often joke at work with fellow Soldiers who have married German gals and now sit down when they pee.  Hope that doesn't offend anybody.  Fortunately, Julia (Meine Frau) is very supportive and is willing to relocate.  We have a good partnership rooted in Natural Law.  Right now I have basically three options.  1 - stay in Germany and work in my Miltech/Unit Administrator Job as a Reservist (limited long-range career options) while Julia  pursues her medical career.  2 - Go back Active Component (I've had enough of the "special shots" serving in 160th SOAR) and 3 - AGR recruiter, which will put us in a civilian locale.

Does anybody have a lowdown on the medical industry and hospitals in  Wyoming? 

Anywho, of course the most important thing is raising my children with the chance to be free, safe and surrounded by decent folks. 

I just started reading Boston's Gun Bible and ordered Molon Labe!  I also ordered both books for my brother in Michigan. 

That is all.  Sorry for the stilted post.  I have few true friends to talk to and years of thoughts I would like to spill out.

As for your wife, Wyoming is in the usual conundrum of having too few people (and usually quite healthy people) to attract many good doctors. The clinic and hospital here in Newcastle have been turning themselves inside out trying to figure a way to get a new doctor here, since the three already in practice are due to retire soon. They have recruited a few over the last 5 years, but none of them will stay because they prefer the much larger patient base of a large city.

So, it will depend on what sort of medical work your wife wants to do. If she would be happy with a rural, family practice that won't ever make her rich, she could find a spot in almost any Wyoming town with a clinic - or start her own. We don't have enough people to attract fancy specialists, but are in great need of honest, freedom loving general practitioners.

But she needs to be very familiar with the insane state of western medical practice going on here now, and the advent of nationalized (socialized even more) medicine coming down the pike. I just let my RN "license" of more than 20 years lapse because I refuse to be a part of that ever again.

She needs to understand well what is going on here in medicine before you can make up your minds what you want to do. If you have questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

Thanks a bunch for the info and reply.  Thankfully, Julia actually pursued medicine to help people, not be a sales rep for big pharma.  Of course, doctor's have their limitations as to how far they can stray from the powers that be.  As long as she can earn a living wage while hopefully contributing to other's well-being she will be content. 

She is already aware of the process to be able to practice in the U.S.S.A.  If you have any specific/general knowledge that you think would benefit us please reply.  I think our biggest concern is her parents.  Granted Julia will be 31 this month and I will be 35 in February, they are concerned about her career in Germany if the U.S. doesn't work out.  We both know that what matters most is the three of us. 

I am dead set on getting to Wyoming as soon as possible.  Good or bad, the best/only way for me to get there is as a Army recruiter.  Hopefully I can get good placement in Wyoming.  My backup States are Montana and Michigan.  My plan is to be in Wyoming by the fall at the latest.  I have already talked to my Mother and Brother in Michigan about coming to live with us in Wyoming.  So far, they are all for it.  We shall see.

I'm scratching my head about Michigan. Upper Peninsula, maybe? 

Being in your 30's means you don't have to pay attention to parents any more. 

You do want to keep your wife happy though, at least within reason. 

Only Europeans think they have to die in the same town they were born in. Moving somewhere does not mean you are stuck there. If it doesn't work out, move somewhere else.

Oh, and get out of the military. That occupation has fallen into disrepute, and for good reason.

Indeed, Michigan is a hotbed of activity for liberals right now.  Gov Granholm has made a collective mess of things with evermore debt and increased taxes, even in the face of an automotive industry crash.  Things ain't lookin too good for freedom in MI.

While I truly enjoy visiting MI, but I can't imagine relocating there.  As you mention, with family there, maybe it's a convenient landing spot to get back in CONUS.  But I'd be making plans to move as soon as I landed.

Even with the 'wilderness' of the UP, you'd still be subject to the garbage generated from Lansing.  The auto industry is in about as bad a shape as I've ever seen it, and I've been attached one way or another as a supplier since the 70's.  And it's going to get worse before it gets better.

Best of fortune to you and yours in getting back to CONUS.  We really need as many freedom minded folks as possible right now...

If YooperLand ever decides to leave the rest of that cesspool, I might consider moving back.
Loved it up there, even with the 5-10 feet of snow on the ground all winter.
However, Wyoming has a lot more going than "Michigan" ever will have - elk, deer, pronghorn, real mountains - do miss the sailing though.

Hello all,

Thanks again for the replies.  The winds of fortune are starting to blow my way.  A couple of weeks ago I was informed that there were not any vacant recruiter positions in Wyoming or Montana.  The closest were Utah, Idaho and North Dakota.  Michigan also came up and it was Ironwood, MI which is in the northwest corner of the UP.  So, I settled on Ironwood and started my processing.  Well just about an hour or so ago, I set my school date for March and got a slot for Wyoming.  I should be in Wyoming by late summer/fall.  I don't know exactly where yet, but just getting their is good enough for me right now.  I know the military isn't in vogue right now, but it is my ticket to get to Wyoming.  I just hope that being a recruiter doesn't sour people towards me.  Off the subject, does anybody deal with Ted Brown and the Shooter's Den?  I am looking forward to getting a custom built M14.  I sent him an email and am waiting on a response. Yes, yes I will post it in the proper topic.  I was looking forward to getting a snow mobile for Michigan.  I suppose they aren't needed in Wyoming.  Anywho, everyone have a swell weekend and look forward to hearing from you and possibly seeing you in the future.

Below is the current snow cover map of the country...looks like a bit more (depth & area) in Wyoming than the ol' U.P...  The Big Horns are the upper center "pink" streak...Jackson, Yellowstone & the Tetons up the west side and the Medicine Bow (near Laramie) in the south central (with a resident expert on that area & the white stuff)...the little dot in the upper east are the Black Hills.

PLUS throughout most is all the BLM and forest service roads....snowmobiles most definitely...in fact, there are resorts that cater specifically to 'mobilers throughout the winter...

Thank you for the snow depth analysis.  When I told Julia that the U.P. wasn't going to happen, she replied that we won't be able to partake in the sledneck culture that I was so excited about. 

As for the school.  I was referring to recruiter school.  Sorry for not explaining that. 

Now comes the busy part.  Getting Logan's birth reported to get him a passport and SSN.  Has to be done to get him over.  And Julia's citizenship.  Then selling the cars, etc....

I was thinking about a Toyota Tacoma for the States.  Is that acceptable?  I have spent 7 out of the past 9 years in Germany and don't know if I will be tarred and feathered for "buying foreign".

Don't know about anyone else, but it's none of my business what you drive. There are no cars actually "made in America" anymore anyway, if that matters to anyone. It doesn't to me. If an American car maker wants to sell me something, he'd better compete with everyone else honestly and openly.

You probably want something in a 4WD, if possible, especially if you live outside of town even a little. It's not just snow and ice you'll be dealing with, but good old Wyoming MUD!! LOL And some of that stuff is really something else - like a million gallons of super glue with rocks thrown in.

Get something tough and reliable. That's far more important than pretty - because you won't see the pretty through the mud a lot of the time.
