They need to be surge protector power strips. Not all power strips have surge protectors. Though if they are not surge protectors, but have a circuit breaker (which you have to reset after they flip), they may offer some protection, but possibly not enough.

And they need to be plugged into a grounded circuit.   All that extra "juice" needs to go somewhere in the event of a surge/spike.   Problem is that many older homes don't have grounded circuits.

I have a big APC battery backup and super surge protector for the computers and printer and that is turned OFF when I get done here. Most electronic stuff is not left plugged in unless I'm using it. The refrigerator is the one I physically unplug from the wall in the case of a fadeout, but that's only happened (when I was home) twice in something like the last 6 or 7 years.

In an electric storm, if I can "feel" the static building as the lightning gets closer, I will go around and unplug everything from the wall. Up here on this hill, overlooking the wide prairie, the strikes can come mighty close. I've felt the hair on my head start to rise a number of times. Scary stuff! :)

My house was built in 2000, and the engineer who inspected it before I bought it said everything was properly grounded.

I'm not sure those "power strips" are much protection against anything but occasional static bursts, but I seriously doubt they'd be much help against lightning anywhere near close. When a thunderstorm is nearby, I go around and unplug sensitive items - especially electronics. They can be damaged by a close strike even unplugged, I understand... but we do what we can.

One of the dangers I was not aware of until a few years ago is the occasional LOW voltage. If things like compressors in the refrigerator are running and this happens, it can damage them -especially over time. Anyway, this is what I've been told.

The question, then, is what can be done to protect them? Currently, if I see the lights dim, I unplug the refrigerator until the lights are steady again for at least an hour or so. This has only happened a few times, but I am concerned about it happening when I'm not home. Is there some sort of protection device for that?

Off topic, I know... but then I didn't start it.  >:D  :P

Ahh, what to do about a 5-10 amp load and line sags. Always the easy questions.

Well, the kludge would be to snake your hand in and dial down the fridge to like 2-3 if its on 8-9. This prevents it from
kicking on every ten minutes. The downside is, after 4-5 hours things may tend to thaw, and you may tend to forget
if the electric storm is causing distractions.

Another widget is a voltage controller for your fridge, plug it into the wall, plug the fridge into that. The idea was that
these cut down the startup surge and lowered power consumption on old fridges. They also tended to keep the lights
from dimming as much if your local grid power was bad, or your generator was wimpy.  If lighting hits, its a solid state
device and tends to blow up before the fridge.

They also do make MOVs(surge suppressors) that clip right into your breaker panel. One side hot to neutral, and other
other side hot to neutal. If you want neutral to ground I think you would have to manually wire it in rather than just
snapping them in. The idea was you don't have to surge suppress every outlet.

The last alternative for line sags, really big honking coils. Small ones are the size of a breadbox, big ones are the size of
mobile homes. Considering the cost of copper these days, I hate to think what they cost now. In the 90s a small eighty
pound one was a few hundred bucks. Probably why battery/inverter backups are the soultion from pretty much everyone.

Flywheel backups, some places have em, never seen one. Come back in forty years maybe they'll have a hardware store
version.

Now, back onto topic. What are the particular indigenous irritations of wyoming for a new person ? No booze on sundays,
fireants, carnivorous squirrels, armadillos, large flying birds that attack shiney things, gas stations closing on sunday at 4pm?

The only two negative things I can say about Wyoming involve the idiot "permit" required to CC, and the fact that I can't just shoot the damned (king's) deer that are damaging my baby trees. Of course, one or both of those are a problem most everywhere.

But I can cope...

Yeah, the deer subject was always a fun one in michigan. You ask the question of "have you tried blood meal", the ones who
don't say "eew", "ick", and "nasty!" say that it just lures in the coons and possums.

However, while you need a permit to shoot and kill the deer, if you "accidentally" nail one about eight times with a BB rifle
or some sort of airsoft gun while target shooting in the back yard, whos to know ?  >:D

A slingshot and something about the size of a shooter marble might also be handy.

Getting off topic. Maybe split hunting/survival/gear debate to another thread?

Thank you.

Lots of threads for those, Michael. These things tend to inter relate. I'll go away.  :-X  :):)

I'm not saying go away, and I'm not saying that everything is not interrelated, it is.

I don't mind tangents, but it feels like we've lost the plot. The plot, as related to my original post when I started the thread, was me and Debra Jean crowing about the joy of the fact that we're finally moving. I'm going to post more about that as we're on the road, and once we're there. At the rate the thread is splintering, it's going to feel like I'm hijacking when I post again about the original thread!  :D

The Internet is an open playing field, but that means it has to be self-moderating to have any usefulness. I'm not playing cop, I'm making a gentle nudge back to what I started typing about six pages ago, the place it was at for the first five page, and I'd love to have it sort of still resemble when it's at page ten.

There is an old Arabian proverb. "the dogs bark and the caravan goes on".

Pretty analagous to governments. There have been thousands of governments for thousands of years. Most or all of them are gone, the ones existing now will sooner or later be gone. The one we put up with in this country today will be gone in the future too, its just a given. Governments do not last but people and social and business structures do. Governments once they outlast their usefullness usually end up in the waist bind of the past. Most governments expire from simple suicide just by growing in to tyrranical entities and the citizenry must end them to save themselves and their future from it. Ends of governments are cyclical, and in all actuality no great loss and usually for the betterment of all. Governments would have no example or frame of reference without societies to base themselves upon.

LAST FULL DAY IN CALIFORNIA:

I walk to the local post office almost every day. Yesterday evening, I took my last ever walk there. What is usually ordinary to me felt religious, because it was the last time I'll take that walk (we're leaving for more-free pastures in Wyoming tomorrow).

I took pictures on my walk. I kept thinking to myself "California sure would be a beautiful place to live if it weren’t for all those damn Californians!"

LAST FULL DAY IN CALIFORNIA:

With a lot of hard/smart work and a timely dose of good fortune, the day I finally say that myself may not be too terribly far off. Congratulations!

Although I understand completely the idea of a last walk (been there, done it), if ya REALLY wanted to enjoy your "last day in KA" to the fullest, you should have come down to SD, taken a train to Tijuana and partied like a dumb American/Canadian frat jock. Then again, getting back home in one piece would certainly have been a somewhat slight question mark....but at least you coulda told your grandkids ya'd been to TJ and survived the trip back! ;D >:D

Or at least the socialistas that had them brainwashed for the past 40-50-odd years. But believe me, I know what you mean.

I'm glad to hear that you are finally out there. Cali. would not be a bad place, if it wasn't for about 99% of the people there. I spent enough time there when I was in the Marines. I couldn't wait to get out of there. That was back in '70. I hear it's a lot worse now.
