California's insanely ravenous government is at it again.

Many unaware of California's 'use tax'

SACRAMENTO — A good portion of California's tax gap consists of "use-tax" payments many people don't know they're required to make.
It's been the law since 1935, said Anita Gore, a spokeswoman for the state Board of Equalization.

The use tax is levied at the same rate as California's sales tax. It is applied to items bought out of state and intended for use in California.

These items could be just about anything — clothing, books, CDs, dogs and cats, medical equipment or whatever.

The tax was imposed originally to keep an "even playing field" between California businesses, which had to pay sales tax, and companies in other states that did not, Gore said.

There is a new buzz about how the state is going to aggressively pursue these taxes most often owed for internet purchases.
The proposals I've seen are for the original tax owed, interest, and a 10% penalty.
And a new enforcement arm, lavishly funded of course.

ONE MORE REASON, IF YOU NEEDED ONE, TO LEAVE CALIFORNIA AND MOVE TO WYOMING!!!

Hmmmm, and they're going to attempt to collect this tax on everything purchased out of state since 1935? Wow! Talk about bureaucrat job security! LOL

Except... people have an amazing capacity to sidestep this sort of thing.

One thing is sure... those who actually stick around to be robbed even more - well, what can I say? Everyone else needs to pack up and get the heck out of there, for sure.

And, don't worry about turning off the light as you leave... who cares...

Uh, gang, Wyoming also has a use tax.  :P

The problem is that it is hard to enforce, and Kali is more motivated these days. But if the state here can collect it, they do collect it.

In calif you are supposed to add the use tax owed on one of the lines on the  tax form.
They can  realistically only catch you on purchases made by credit card. Tracing gift card or cash purchased items would be nearly impossible and not cost effective; also do not have items delivered to your home under your name as these create a trail.
According to my CPA they do not audit for this unless they have some knowledge of a large enough purchase being made, probably by a fink; or as part of a random audit.

This is like collecting a tax at a swap meet/flea market.... They only know what you tell them.

 Never volunteer info..

Ca. has to find the money to hire all those people... Create a new division of "we can spend money. "

From 1935, most of those people have died... What are they going to do ask my 94 year old Mother to dig out all the things she ever got, bought etc. I think not...

Scare tactics by the bully in the room...

I live in San Diego.. moving to Wyoming is a drem of mine.

You guys probably dont have any idea how bad things are here in California when to comes to "hidden" taxes. (I know some of you do.. but many of you may have never liced here).

In north County San Diego we pay 9.25% sales tax.. on top of the state income and federal ncoe taxes. We have some of thehighest health insurance premiums thansk to the millions of illegals who steal health care (yet find it religously objectionable to use birth control and continue to have babies they cant afford to cloth, feed or insure).

Vehicle taxes are INSANE.. the inital purchase of a cehicle will cost you an additonal 12.5% in sales tax and initial registration. They recently almost doubled the cost of registering your car because the state is broke due to the public employees unions screwing the city with obscene pension and benefits plans.

There is also the hidden tax of traffic tickets.. even the most minor of moving violations here is around 400 dollars. Get one of those red light camera tickets.. 435 dollars! Even minor speeding is a 3-400 dollar ticket now... even if there is no one else on the road..

The worst part is those of us who actually work and produce something get nothing fo all these taxes. The roads are horrible, the police are corrupt and vindictive. The local government spends more time trying to figure out how to invade your priovacy and take your stuff than they do trying to fix our destroyed economy (which would primarily consist of them getting out of the business of running businesses)

Oh I wish for the day I could get the hell out of here and move somewhere like Wyoming where personal responsibility is the law of the land. 5 more years my youngest is 18.. (I have split custody) and onto greener pastures..

Hehe maybe I can build a small solar and wind farm and sell power to the local utility :-)

Another reason to vote with your feet and get the heck out of Kalifornia.
I pledge allegiance to liberty and justice for all, and pledge perpetual opposition to the Republic of the United States, and to the control and tyranny for which it stands.

Welcome, Hobgoblin11, from an old California escapee. Lots of folks in your predicament with the kids and custody, I know. My oldest son is in the same boat, but his youngest is almost old enough to choose for himself. You don't really have to wait until they are 18. At 13 or 14, THEY (with you) can petition the court and live with the parent they choose. Check it out.
