In NY I think that counties and cities can impose sales taxes also.  I know that when I'm forced to go to NYC the sales tax is way more than 4%.

"My" county is Genesee in NY our rate is 8%, Erie county which contains Buffalo NY is 8.25%, Monroe county which contains Rochester NY in 8% also.

So Dakota is maddening. Doing gun shows there it seems every county has a different percentage. And they are pit bulls in collection, with the usual threats to not let you do anymore guns hows unless you pay up. Some how ;) I usually comply.

Crook county: 6%

Yes, but it doesn't matter since you can't buy anything here!

Being already retirement eligible and subject to 'pop smoke' likely within the next 12-18 months or so, the commonly-travelled road SOUTH holds little attraction for me. Association with some like-minded folks, and the tax situation (with proximity to Montana as well), holds some appeal that others' traditional "pre-retirement snowbird" locations can't. A recon is in the planning stages, aided by a stalwart friend with whom I correspond. Seed was planted awhile back, but his loaning me Molon Labe didn't hurt.  Choice of donation of that which was earned by me remains with me. That it drives those who want it but can't have it to a frenzy is simply dessert.
