Hey folks,
One of our forum members suggested that I drop by and say hello. With 7,100 members I'll leave it to you to decide who that was :)
Name is Ron Hood and website is www.survival.com (http://www.survival.com). We are the worlds leading producer of outdoor survival and preparedness videos. We are also in the process of launching our new magazine (due Feb 1). www.survivaldotcommag.com (http://www.survivaldotcommag.com).
Our business is located in Coeur D'Alene ID and for the last couple of years we've been considering a move to Montana or Wyoming and of course dragging the business along. We've spent a fair amount of time exploring both states and we are still unsettled as to the perfect location. Why move? Lately we've been seeing a crazy influx of unwanted types and it just doesn't jive with our visions of what this Country is all about. As a Vietnam veteran I feel very strongly about the sacrifices our armed forces have made to safeguard the principles that make this country great. We are now in a struggle to keep these rights in place and stop the explosive grip the urban areas are trying to place on those of us who still practice and defend this countries values.
I look forward to reading more about ya all and perhaps finding my way to one of your events.
Thanks for having this place.

Welcome aboard Slamaxe. There are a few veterans and some active duty amongst us and many that would like to see this country get back to what it was designed to be.
Was in your neck of the woods this year (and the past few years a time or two) and noticed something odd this June around Sandpoint: a considerable number of hippies. Yep, the old 60's type, unkempt, long hair, complete with painted up vans/cars and all the oddball trimmings. Is this part of the influx you speak of or did I just hit a hippie convention or possibly a costume party? :D
Also, maybe you could detail a bit more about the areas of ID that seem to be infiltrated with undesireable types and what they seem to be up to...
-
Well I certainly Know whom you are and welcome, thanks for coming by!
You'll see me as Rich on the dirttime forum as well...
Well there goes the neighborhood the hoodlums have arrived....
and glad to have them.!!!

Interesting...
OK... I'll try to give it a shot.
I was the Mayor of Garden Valley Idaho for a term. During that time a group called the "rainbow people" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_Gathering (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_Gathering) Infiltrated and setup in a sensitive salmon spawning area of our county (Boise). By the time they had set up there were almost 40,000 of them by the Sheriff's count. Their BS almost bankrupt our county... babies being born, accidents, drug overdoes, and of course the selling and buying of children. They came into my city one night and pissed all over the produce and meat in our market. When it was tossed out they took it... they burglarized vacation homes and on and on.
Some of those people are living in our town here. There is them and the Californians. Now understand this, I moved to Idaho from California 15 years ago to land my family had owned for a century. My family helped to settle California in the 1860's and by the early 90's we were conservative refugees from a system gone haywire. Idaho was our first choice because of our connection to the land. Before long we started seeing the liberal elements moving into Boise. Example; Some nutcase saw kids sitting in the back of a pickup and demanded a new law to restrict that... it was unsafe! I grew up in the back of a pickup... The law proposal was tossed but year after year I see new liberal rules making their way in.
WHere I live we have a huge herd of whitetail. They're like rats. I shoot them and eat them... yet a neighbor from California argues that they were here before us and they have the claim to the land. Right, so I arrow a buck and he dies on their property and all hell breaks loose... F&G understood and let it go but they kept my deer. It's stuff like that. There is much more but basically CDA is turning into a Democratic destination and it sickens me. Obama this and that. Even the press here is starting to turn. Fortunately we still have our CCW rules in place and class 3's are all over but the future is clear and I don't want my son growing up in that sort of stuff.
Frankly, over the last few years I've learned that if someone from California makes a proposition you will lose. There is something you don't know happening and it isn't good. Lies are the start of that association.
Don't get me wrong on this either, there are other refugees from California, most from rural areas but the fact is that they have made a commitment to move and will make a commitment to support the rules as they exist, not try to change them. They also understand our values as they live in rural areas, not in some urban area where they have grown used to lies and misrepresentation. That is what is happening in Idaho... and they are getting the voting numbers..

Hi Rich,
I'm not a member of Dirtime but I can't guarantee many Hoodlums will follow me!
Thanks for the welcome. I'll behave myself... You have the stick ;)

Howdy Slamaxe, glad you found FSW, Let us know if you have any specific questions about Wyoming. Lots of questions have already been asked and answered so dig into some of the threads here when you get the time.
-
Thanks wyomiles
I've been doing that and lots to read here. Things like taxes, education (I have a 6 year old), business regulations, gun rights etc are top of my list. When ya move a company it gets complicated!

Welcome, from a California escapee - who wants NOTHING to do with them or their ways, ever. :) I never really had a home until I came to Wyoming.
-
C'mon over for a visit ASAP.
-
Thanks for the warm welcome,
We will be exploring more of Wyoming this coming summer. We are looking for a small town near a city with an airport that gets regular commercial flights. I'm a mountain guy so we want mountains, streams and land. Our next objective after the magazine is in full swing is to start a school based on self-sufficiency, survival skills and more. We have some leading instructors available to teach the topics we have in mind so a facility to house that sort of endeavor is part of our plan. So far we have found much of what we want in Bozeman MT but this year we will be focusing on Wyoming. We are projecting a year before we move.
Of course there is much more but I don't want advertise our plans beyond what is already known. We did that once and it bit us.

Thanks for your detailed reply to my question, Slamax. Very interesting.
Dang, sounds like human swill soup parked in your AO and made a pigpen of the place. At least it was somewhat temporary. Rainbow Idjits have also made tracks in WY, but are, I believe, gone. Gotta wonder if that's what I saw in Sandpoint. No matter, we will only be visiting the area in the future vs living there... How is it the liberal loons find all the nice places to live and promptly ruin them. ???
White tail are like rats around these parts in the Midwest as well and cause A LOT of problems from crop predation to severe vehicle damage (we've had our share). They are among the dumbest animals I've ever seen and deserve to be eaten. I ENCOURAGE my neighbors to hunt the buggers and some have permission to track across my place. The deer simply need to be culled, as in shoot 'n eat. ;) I guess the bambi lovers would rather see crops and vehicles destroyed. ::) Idjits. Folks of lesser intelligence even hand feed them in the state parks nearby and simply can't understand why the 'pets' have a tendency to bite their hand or ram horns into cars during rut. Ha, ha, ha, I love it.
I talked to some refugees from ID a couple of years ago that now reside in Red Lodge and their comments would echo yours WRT Kali, OR, WA 'refugees' setting up shop in ID and bringing all their goofy ideas (like the bambi complex) with them. It's a shame that folks can be so utterly thoughtless, but it's everywhere to varying degrees. You'll also see some of it in WY, in pockets. Just not as widespread as much of the population remains rural/small town and of a predominately self-reliant attitude. Hopefully it'll stay that way...

Good points Bobcat!
During the last decade I tried to keep tabs on the way the disease spreads. Population trends, attractions that bring them in, number of coffee stands, gay bars etc. I've come to the conclusion that it is like a disease. It consumes the health and harmony of the body it infects. It is invasive and insulting and it need not just come from Kalifornia. It spreads....
Recently I've noticed that our little paper, The Coeur D' Alene Press, is publishing more letters to the editor that complain about how we Idahoans drive or conduct ourselves. Of course these are from outta staters. I think it was last year that some germ wrote that he could never feel safe in a state where he saw so many people wearing guns. I don't know if he had Xray vision or put his hands on folks but his theory was that we are unsafe here... Then there was a flurry of letters supporting that guys viewpoint. Now I gotta ask ya... was that planned? Did the Press purposely allow those to be printed? I'm of the belief that these people target topics and then use a team system to support whatever outrageous viewpoint they espouse. Naturally this has an effect as most folk here are sorta naive when it comes to manipulation by Californians and others. After all, we trust each other. So this sort of attack is not pushed aside but allowed to stand.
When I was a kid in California there was a dairy farm down the street from where I lived. Mom used to give me .10 to walk down and buy a bottle of fresh milk. One day the farm went away and they were bull dozing the farm to build apartments. A guy was standing there with blueprints and I asked him why they were taking down the farm... In an accent from New York (I had relatives from there, I knew the sound) he said "Well kid, these country bumpkins can never compete with educated city people" ... It stayed with me.

Slamaxe, not sure how much $ you have to invest but your post got me thinking about this place.
http://www.landwatch.com/Platte-County-Wyoming-Land-for-sale/pid/123000080
The price has been coming down over the last year or so, so you might be able to get it for less. (I have been keeping an eye on it and dreaming about living there :)) There are 1400 acres. Buildings in place. Just north of the North Platte river and close to two large lakes. In the mountains. About two hours from Casper and an Hour and a half to Cheyenne.
I also mentioned this location because if you are the type of person who is a business person you might be someone who could see that this ghost town might be revitalized with people of like mind. Here at FSW we have had several discussions about a group buy of real estate. We have always needed someone to take the reins and put it together. With your business as a start I think many others here have ideas about businesses they could relocate to a "freedom loving" town.
Just thought I would throw it out there.

I drove through Couer D'Alene once, that's a REALLY pretty area. Really sad to imagine it infested with those rainbow critters. Reminds me of one of my friends who used to work in a lumber mill in WA. The whole place got burned down by one of those eco-terrorist groups. Don't remember which one, but I believe it was one of those groups that believes in "
non-aggression" (but only when it pertains to plants or themselves, not others, and surely not those "evil corporations." ::)).
-
Bozoland? Ha ha ha ha ha ;D Trust me, you'll like Wyoming a lot more! ;D Survival training? Look up the "cold weather indoctrination" thread in the gun board here. Sounds like you'll fit right in. Welcome to FSW ~W~
-
wyomiles... you are a demon... :D
We just dumped a hunk of cash into the magazine and some other land investments (stuff is cheap here right now). I'll be thinking about this.
Not sure the wife would enjoy it at first and educating my 6 year old is on top of the list so actually living there might be a stretch. With that mine I'd want to know about water quality. Locally we have the silver valley on the Coeur D' Alene river and for a century or more it has been dumping stuff into the water. So much that they don't dare disturb the sediment on the bottom of the lake since what is under the mud cap is toxic. Kids can't even eat more than one or two fish a week for fear they'll get poisoned. The entire silver valley area was a "superfund site".
With that in mind I'd need a lot of info. but the idea of owning a bar.... and maybe putting in a really good BBQ place... Some other stuff too it could be a lot of fun work.
Now if there was a place like that with a hard rock tunnel mine. The birdy would be chirping a lot louder.
Grumble, grumble.
I'll check up on that "cold weather indoctrination" thread but the last thing I want is to step on anyone's toes. Anyway... as I get older the cold bites deeper. Hell it was 10f today and I had to put on a long sleeve shirt!

Hello from Wyoming! Having lived in Bozeman in the late '70s, and Idaho in the mid '70s, I think you'll find Bozeman to be more liberal than north Idaho. And complaints about Californians were rampant in both States back then, as the were in Colorado in the early '70s. (I recall "Don't Californicate Colorado" bumper stickers were frequently seen, even in Boulder back then.)
I don't know if any city in Wyoming has regular airline flights, if you mean the big carriers. If you don't mind the commuter flights or "teeny weenie airlines," you'll have a lot more choices. Good luck with your plans!
-
You won't be stepping on anyones toes ;D Additional instructors/experienced folks would be welcome. It's all the way up to 0 now so it's getting warmer. ;D
-
Folks of lesser intelligence even hand feed them in the state parks nearby and simply can't understand why the 'pets' have a tendency to bite their hand or ram horns into cars during rut.
You wouldn't believe the antics that happen in Yellowstone every year. People walking up within 20 feet of a bull elk and setting off the flash in their camera. ::) We had one family of tourists show up at Bill Cody Ranch with a broken-off buffalo horn stuck in the side of their van. :D
As to hippies, look at the bright side. Most of them don't vote. I wish more people were like that. I've known a lot of people tending that way, and the more disreputable they look, the less trouble they give you. Mostly they just want to get stoned and "commune" with nature. The folks I have most trouble with are not hippies, but "civic improvers", always pushing for a new boondoggle, with a tax hike to support it.
Slamaxe, you might look at a border location between Montana and Wyoming, e.g. Sheridan or Lovell. Billings is the largest city in Montana, is nearby, has a nice non-bureaucratic airport and tax-free shopping. And the Big Horns are really cool.

wyomiles... you are a demon... :D
Ron
Just doing my part ;D

A gentleman in Boseman has a restored WWII Willys jeep with a de-milled M2 on a pintle mount. He would drive it in the Independence day parades.
Not this year. someone objected to the .50
I thought "in Montana?" ???
Ugh.
-
Zen... Funny to see you here !
Same here, we had a guy in a Willys with "ma Deuce" mounted on a pintle firing blanks on the 4th of July parade. Every year there he was, dressed as Gen McArthur firing his deuce and some dinks objected to the noise... "scared them" so they banned him from shooting it. Year before last he showed but no firing. this year... no show.
I decided that before I move I'm gonna enter the parade and mount an acetylene cannon made to look like a 105 on the rack. That will disturb the pansies...
Ron
-
BTW...
Don't want to put a turd in anyone's soup but I'm not really "conservative", more like pragmatic. I believe in sin taxes and freedom. I frankly don't care what folks do so long as it doesn't interfere with what I do or hurt other folks. Legalize it and tax it. Shoot gangs on sight and release the restrictions on silencers and autos and follow the code of Hammurabi... 'cept don't kill them, just take a finger or a bank account. Flogging is better than jail. I don't care who or what a person is so long as they act like civilized humans and keep their hands off my people and stuff or my neighbors people and stuff.
Simplistic but it worked for thousands of years. I'm no anarchist but I think we have too many laws restricting behavior and business except of course for banks... them we need to adjust some oh yeah and politicians and bureaucrats, they need a whippin annually just to remind them who they work for.
Ooops, Scotch is running low... gotta go ;)
Ron
-
Ron if you show up in time I'll rent you my 3 lb cannon to use for 10 lbs of
FG powder... I'll throw in some 3/32 fuse...

Hey Ron,
I wanted to scout around and gather some intel before I reported back to you. I guess you couldn't wait :)
Seems like a good bunch of like minded, liberty loving, self respsecting, self sufficient folk here.
Our kind of people!
I'm worried that I'm gonna go to Wyoming next June and not want to go home...
-
Rich,
You have a canon?!?
The National muzzleloading cannon championships were held in Amenia NY for a while (Yes New York)
About 15 miles from were I grew up. very cool stuff!
One year the Litchfield CT unit was missing one of their crew. I was invited to fill in. I put the powder charge (pre weighed and in a tinfoil cake like a ring-ding) in the muzzle.
they were shooting 8 oz juice cans filled with number 9 shot and epoxy. A giant Glazer Safety Slug!
(Actually the epoxy would make it a Mag-safe, I guess)
The other popular projectile was 12oz soda/beer cans willed with concrete.
What are you using?
-
Rich,
You're all heart!
This is what I had in mind... the 155mm
http://www.cannon-mania.com/bigbang.htm
A saw instructions for converting one to feed from an acetylene bottle. Much less expensive than the FG powder... and the rent...
Zen,
Thanks, seems there are a few Hoodlums here already, keeping a low profile but sharing their interests in a Free State.

"Legalize sin and tax it"? You need to google up Wayne Allyn Roots website! If the dumba$$s in Commiefornia did that with weed their deficit would be gone in a week or so.
-
Yes I do... Its made from a Terex Ram bit short of 5 feet...
When it was made I had a then seemingly endless supply of
scrap steel round stock and cut sections of it....
It is currently undergoing a ReBore to accomodate Beer/Pop
cans with wad...Which of late I DO seemingly have an endless
supply >:D
Its cool because we left sections of the chrome plating like trim
rings on it and parkerized the Rest...
I do not have a carriage built for it, the one I had split at the lugs
when fired, and have been using sand bags since.

Nah, they'd just create another program "for the children" and get even further into debt.
-
True Sister but they'd be verrrry slow and Verrrry happy when they did it and afterwards they'd celebrate with Twinkies and chocolate while they remarked on the wonderful colors everyone was wearing.
Wayne Allyn Roots looks like he is pretty close to where I am. Sadly, to get to that point I suspect we'd need a successful secession movement and then put those rules into operation on a small scale.
Ron
-
Slamaxe: I like the sound of your close pairing of "successful" and "secession." The two words together just sort of roll off the tongue. As does, "There's many a slip between the cup and the lip."
The thought of merriment in the courthouse squares of small towns in the South during the early months of 1861 did come to my constrained mind, as did the results.
I'd prefer several voluntary confederations of States, to the hungry federal Leviathan, any day of the week. I think that this sort of arrangement is within the bounds of the current U.S. Constitution, as long as the confederation's business is done informally. Guv-to-Guv, so to speak.
