Hi everyone, I'm Erik and I hail from North Carolina.

I'm currently a senior at Appalachian State University studying Criminal Justice.  At one point I wanted to become a police officer.  Before I began my real education through books and online forums.  It began with Unintended Consequences by John Ross, followed by Boston's Gun Bible, then Molon Labe.

I grew up in a libertarian family.  So these three books were readily available to me as my father(Who is a rifleman) owned them.  After I began to read them, I started discussing what I read with my dad.  My dad is a man of stout faith and principle, unwavering in what is right and what is wrong along with what is necessary.  This was when my real education began, to much dismay of my liberal minded professors.  I notice immediately that those very same professors did not like being interrupted during lectures to be told that they were wrong and why.  It seems debates are not a popular form of education anymore, instead it's one sided liberal propaganda with no free thinking students to argue back.

I recently took a 10 day roadtrip to Wyoming before classes started fall of 2006.  I went with my dad, and drove the 25 hours to Wyoming taking turns sleeping and immediatly slept for 12 hours when we arrived in Cheyenne.  From Cheyenne we toured the state, going to Rock Springs, then to Jackson through the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone, on to Cody, Sheridan, through Casper(didn't stop though), and back down to Cheyenne before we headed back to NC.

I don't know if 'Falling in Love' with Wyoming when we went there is right, I think both my dad and I fell in love with Wyoming after reading Molon Labe before we had even set foot in WY.

We both want to move there, my Dad unfortunatly is financially stuck in NC through some land development(His company that I work for in my spare time builds houses).  Also my younger brother is in his junior year of High School, and my mother has her own business here as well.  I believe once my brother enters college, my father will be able to convince my mother to move to WY and bring both their businesses.

I, luckily, have the priveledge of being young with no geographical obligations.  Although that may change once I enter the Marine Corps this fall.

I finish my college up this year, and plan on entering the Marine Corps.  After I finish my training, I wanted to come out to WY and find a place.(I'm heading into the Marine Corp Reserves)  But more importantly I wanted to lend a hand in 'freeing' a state.  I'd love to donate as much time and energy as I can to drawing others to WY and helping them get started.  I've had plenty of experience in building houses with the exception of plumbing and electrical work, maybe I could help out with housing.

I'm not sure what I will do when I'm in Marines. I've always had an interest in protecting folks, and felt a calling towards law enforcement and private security(Seriously considered Blackwater after the Marines until I realized what sort of politicans and VIP's I'd be risking my neck for...).  Might try for WY law enforcement, couldn't hurt to have Libertarian with strict principles and beliefs in such a position.  Especially if I worked my way up.

If not, well, as much as I know about Construction Business - I've no real desire to own my own.  I'd prefer to start a Firearms/Camping/Hunting store.  Been around firearms all my life, would love to own my own firearms store.  (With an indoor and outdoor range!)  I've given that a lot of thought and worked up a rough business plan for it.

Any guidance towards WY would be greatly appreciated, I can't wait to move out there and get some WY callouses.

 ;)

Hi Erik,

Just a short post to welcome you here, and thank you for your comments.
I'm very flattered that Mol?n Lab?! was so inspirational to you for Wyoming.

I've a great respect and fondness for the Corps, and there are a few Marines
here on the Forum (razorcityrifleman, in particular).  Feel free to begin a post
about the Corps, or PM them directly.

Regarding all else, let us know what we can answer or offer.

Finally, if you're free 22-24 June, we've our 4th FSW Jamboree coming up,
and your family is heartily welcomed to join us.

Welcome to you.  That's a hearty Navy welcome!  Heh.

Glad to see you have a clear idea of where you want to go and what you want to do with your life.  It's nice to see people so focused.

Be careful in the corps.  I have utmost respect for Marines, don't get me wrong.  But you're also going to be the "tip of the spear" as they like to say, and reserves or not, expect to be going to the sandbox sometime soon.  So do be careful there.  Wyoming is going to need a few, proud Marines to draw the fire for everyone else!  :P

Anyways, if you have any questions about military life in general, feel free to ask.  I'm a pilot flying MH-53E's (that big ugly black thing under my name to the left).  There are, like Boston said, plenty of Marines on the board as well, and I could get you in contact with some as well if you'd like.

Again take care, enjoy the last semester or so of college you have left, and keep learning.  Hope to see you in Wyoming some day.

Hi Erik!  We moved here from NC back in 2005! Sounds like you made a similar road trip out here that we did.  Hope you can make the move soon!   ~W~

Thank you everyone.   ;)

I'm excited to finally be finishing up my degree, and even more excited about heading into the Marines and Wyoming.

I'm not worried about being sent overseas in the Marine Corp, as a Reservist I have the ability to volunteer for tours and plan on using that to my advantage.  I figure it will give me an edge over when I'm sent, so I can manipulate the time table to some degree in my favor.  So I know I'll be going, as I plan on voluntering to do a tour after I finish all of my training.

I have my eye on moving to Cody, there was a wonderful little firearms manufacturing plant there called Ballard Rifle and Cartridge Co along with a couple of very nice firearms stores(Their names escape me, I do recall they were very close to each other with very nice gun smithing setups in the back doing some beautiful customizing.)

But it all depends, I'll need to find out where the Marine Corps Reserve stations are if there are any in WY or nearby states.

Only part I dread of being in the Marines on the west coast is that chances are extremely high I'll have to visit the Marine bases in California.

I'm also curious as to if this site is directing people into any particular counties, if this is an attempt at a Molon Labe scenario I'd like to know what county(s) we are gathering in.

Is that what the recruiters are telling you bud?  Those guys will say anything.  If it is, you better check your facts with actual reservists.  If you've been reading the news lately, you'd see that people from both sides of the fence in government are calling for a larger presence in Iraq from both the Army and Marines, as well as Individual Augmentees from the Navy and Air Force.  In addition, the total ground forces of both the Army and Marines are in for a large expansion.  Please, trust me when I tell you, that reservists do not have the latitude to choose when and where they go in most cases these days.  If they are calling people back from the Inactive Ready Reserve force (people who don't drill anymore, but are still on a list of those eligible to be recalled) then a guy fresh out of boot camp and his MOS school (and you're saying infantry or some kind of military police is what you want right?) are prime for going over.
Take what I say for what it's worth bro, but realize that once you are in, you belong to them.  Reserves or not.  They say when and where you go.  I know, I've been dealing with it for over six years.

Thank you Blaineus, I haven't signed anything yet.  I'm waiting to find an internship(Required for my major, a 600 hour internship in a criminal law related field) before I sign my life over.

I see that the three counties FSW is pointing towards is Crook, Weston, and Hot Springs.

I reckon Thermapolis is in Hot Springs.  Is Gillete(sp?) in Crook?  And I don't know what is in Weston.  Not much it appears.

I didn't get to visit any of these places and I missed going into any of these counties.  So whats it like?  What does each county have to offer compared to the others?  Is there a Topic on here about that?

Sorry to post again, but there isn't an Edit button.

Boston, I'd love to come out to the FSW Jamboree.  I've talked a couple of my best buddies into a roadtrip out to WY, there of conservative mind(though not very political as in they don't pay much attention to politics nor follow them).  But they love the outdoors, hiking, camping, four wheeling, biking and alll of that good stuff.  So I talked them into it pretty easily by showing them pictures of my trip.  We're hoping to go sometime during the summer, one is a psych major and the other is in Dentistry school so we're trying to work something out.

But the Jamboree would be a great date to aim towards.  Hopefully I'll be able to drag dad away from work(I wouldn't call it drag, but he's a very busy man with lots of obligations) and make a trip of it.

You are welcome bud.  Listen, I'm not trying to tell you to not join the Marines.  There is a lot of great things you would learn and do in the Marine Corps Reserves.  They're a noble, hard fighting group.  All I'm trying to say is do your homework, and remember that recruiters are trying to get you to sign on the dotted line no matter what.  They aren't always completely honest about what is going to happen to you later on, and they're under a lot of pressure to keep the numbers up.

    Good luck to you!

Hi Erik,

The first thing to learn about the military is that recruiters say whatever it takes to get you in, and they are only bound by the contract you sign. Make sure you read it more carefully than they want you to. Notice the parts about them "owning" you for eight years and that everything is trumped by the "good of the service." I can't tell you not to join. Young men want adventure, and then when they get older often question its worth. Jared's advice elsewhere about working hard and saving money applies to military service also. If you do it right you can have enough money to pay cash for a house and have that head start in life. You have to negotiate bonuses and entry rank with the recruiters, and with a (Bachelor's?) degree they might want you for an officer.

Boston has written on this forum that Molon Labe is not what exactly what we are doing in Wyoming. The three counties you mentioned are 'preferred', but their main advantage is in finding an existing community of FSWers. Other areas also have communities going and you can read the forum for information. Gillette is in Campbell County, but provides a lot of jobs within commuting distance of Crook and Weston Counties. The forum has plenty of info on each county. See Jared's pictures of Crook County and then tell me it doesn't look like heaven.

Hop to see you and your buds at the jam.
