Arizona Meetup?
« on: November 15, 2008, 07:21:02 AM »
Hi all,

After reading about the East Coast meetup, Sally and I started tossing around the idea of a meetup in our area (Tucson). We're not sure how many of you are in this neck of the woods or would be willing to travel. We're thinking either a one-day thing just to get together, maybe spend part of the day at the range, and then have lunch and/or dinner, and chew the fat about ideas, philosophy, predictions for the Obamanation, plans, etc., whatever comes up. Or... make it two days with one devoted to going to the range.

First question, is anyone interested at all?  I know of no other FSW-interested people in Tucson, and only one other couple in Phoenix.  If somebody wanted to travel, one solid day of driving would cover all of Arizona south of the canyon, San Diego or extreme southern Cali, Vegas, most of New Mexico, and El Paso.  A loooong day's drive might expand that to Bakersfield, or up the Cali coast past LA, the "Arizona strip" north of the canyon and extreme southern Utah, southern Colorado (the Springs is about 11 hours by car, (weather permitting - the Raton Pass tends to get closed at the drop of a hat), and into the Midland/Odessa area.

From what I've seen on the board, even the most optimistic range doesn't include too many FSWers.

Any others in Tucson/Phoenix that we're not aware of who might be interested?  For those further out, what kinds of activities would make it worth a day's drive?  We're thinking the 13th/14th of December to make it a Bill of Rights day celebration/memorial service.  One problem for those travelling is that we are "in season" for the snowbirds, and so motels are pricier, and RV slots harder to find, than they would be in the summer when nobody wants to be here at all.

kylben, not sure how many AZ. folks are on this board but I know of a few at "the mental militia forum" ( the old Claire Files  forum). If you haven't posted there it might be worth it?

We are in Prescott.  Depending on our schedules, I would certainly be interested.

We're currently trying to firm up plans for December to see our daughter before her deployment to a sandy place.

G'Morning Kylben,  :)

Both Libertymom and I are currently living in E Mesa.  A trip down to Tucson would be doable for us with enough notice to meet with you and other FSW members in Arizona.  Let us know what you'd have in mind (we'd have to check our availability for Dec. 15th/Bill of Rights Day).  Feel free to PM us.

Steve and sbeckman,

I'll get in touch by PM after work.   Glad to hear you guys are interested and living close by.

Just FYI, BOR day, the 15th, is a Monday, so we were thinking of doing this 13th and/or 14th, the weekend immediately prior.

wyomiles,

I have almost no history on the MM forum, haven't really gotten to know anybody there, even in a nodding acquaintance kind of way.

I just checked the schedule, there's a gun show that weekend.  It's at the fairgrounds, which also has a range on site.  Not sure if/how that would fit into any of this, just throwing it out there.

We will be in Phoenix at the Ben Avery Range on Nov. 29-30 helping teach a rifle course. Would love to meet up, but looks like the date is earlier than what you had in mind. We are hoping to Leave Las Cruces and be in WY this fall.

That sounds like the Appleseed that I can't make it to....

If you're coming from LC, that means you'll be passing through Tucson, right?  PM me if you like, maybe you can at least stop and say hi.  We have family in that weekend, which is why I can't make Appleseed, but I'd still love to have a quick visit.  We're only 1 mile off I-10.

kylben,

It looks like I will be driving to Tx. about the 16th/17th.

I'll discuss this with my wife and see if I can be in the Phx. area on the 15th.

We're in Tucson, and aiming for the 13th/14th weekend. The 15th is a Monday, and I'll be at work till around 4:30-5:00.  If all you can manage is a quick stop by on your way through town, we'd still love to get together in the evening after work for a short visit.
