Porn Spam
« on: February 08, 2012, 04:59:53 PM »
Whose job is it to lock or eliminate porn and spam, such as the one in General Wyoming Living about young girls?

I report these things all the time.  The near "Kiddie Port" is particularly concerning.

I offered to moderate them and look into how some sort of CAPTCHA could be put in place to prevent at least the bots from spamming us.

Something to prevent unregistered folks from posting is really needed here.

Thanks Mama.

I'm a senior admin on another forum and spend a few minutes each morning swatting spam there too. Any spam, doesn't matter. I figure that there's plenty of porn available elsewhere for those who really want it. :)

I agree, Marcia...and the child porn is especially disturbing.

You could report them to their ISP for illegal activity but they just move onto another.

Special place in hell for those SOB's...

There are lots of unpleasant things in life.
They are usually removed here within a few hours.
Don't lose any sleep over it.

We try to keep up with the deletions, and as long as there's an admin logged on,
we do O.K.

The forum has some bug or hole, evidently, which allows such unregistered postings.
We'll look into it.

The spammers were registered.  I delete their accounts all the time.

I think the spam would be reduced considerably if new users had to be confirmed by a human admin before they could post.  On the other hand, that could add a fair workload for the admins.  Perhaps new users could be restricted (for posting) to a sub-forum just for the purpose of introducing themselves and asking for general posting privileges?  Of course, that sub-forum could fill up with the same spam...

How do other forums deal with this?  As a participant in quite a few, I have never seen this sort of thing?
And these are very large forums by comparison?

If these were registered, does that mean they had to have been registered by a person (not some sort of bot)?  Does the registration process have some sort of CAPTCHA mechanism?

Perhaps this sub-form could be ONLY visible to admin staff and not to the rest of the forum?  They wouldn't need to know this. A quick assessment that we wouldn't even be aware of would take care of the problems.

I'm a Sr. Administrator for a very large forum. There are four other administrators and two moderators for specific sub-boards. At least one administrator is on line all the time. Our members flag problem posts and the notice goes out to all admins and mods. Someone takes them down within a short time. I look at the new accounts at least daily and eliminate those with spam or other violations of our TOC. Very little ever gets into the boards, actually.

We have discussed using captcha and other methods to verify new accounts, but this has worked for us so far. Just takes a little time and effort on our part.

The one difference I see here is that new accounts can start threads. At TMM, they must post at least 5 responses to other threads before they can start one. Most of the spam accounts that are opened have zero posts.

Much ado about nothing. (In my NSHO)
The spam appears.
It gets reported.
It gets deleted.
Usually all in the matter of a few hours.

It's like roadkill. It's unpleasant to look at. When you see it, turn away if it bothers you. Don't gawk. You'll pass right by it and it'll soon be gone from your view.

The problem is if the .gov anti-freedom web watchers see it before it's deleted and decide to raid the servers/steal the domain etc.

THIS ^^^^^^^^

Particularly when it comes to something that begins to look like Kiddie Porn.

The run of the mill spammers are just a PITA.  Like the one I just now reported about 10 seconds ago.
