Moving to Wyoming from Vermont (feeler)
« on: March 12, 2007, 10:24:55 PM »
I am seriously considering a move from the former free state of Vermont to the (hopefully) free state of Wyoming. I am a master service plumber by trade and I have had trouble finding work with the arrogant, rude, and dishonest corporate plumbers setting up shop in Vermont. Basically I am fleeing the mass migration into Vermont of Subaru driving, latte drinking, granola crunching, Progressive voting, former hippies - turned yuppies - turned pretentious socialites from the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts and New Jersey.

My wife and I are well educated, honest, drug/criminal back round free, frugal, pro environment (without steppping on landowners rights), pro 2A Libertarians who value personal freedom above all else, want to work hard, and own some land/small cabin, and contribute to a community of nice hard working folk. This is IMPOSSIBLE in Vermont b/c these individuals (I don't want to use foul language here), have jacked up the prices so high that the common hard woking man or woman can't EVER get ahead unless they are making a combined income of $100K. To top it off they want to turn beautiful rural Vemont into a commuter station stop for Boston.

Where would you suggest I look for: 1) Work - Construction or Oil/Gas Industry. 2) Affordable housing with lease purchase or owner financing possible. AND 3) freedom for seeing, hearing, knowing, smelling or otherwise having contact with pretentious people from Massachusetts, New Jersey or NYC. I have heard Californians have taken over Jackson, but the Cali folk I have met are angellic compared to this lot from the eastern seaboard. I am not exagerating... Just pay a visit to Burlington Vermont and see first hand what a 3 ring left wing circus this has become! I'm not kidding the police are told to be polite to the gang bangers who have followed up the liberal crowd to peddle to their kids! I don't want to sound like I am "out there", but if you saw the Vermont I grew up in you would be shocked. We didn't even lock our doors, now they are selling crack in open air markets downtown. I need some help finding a place in Wyoming that is friendly to people who respect others and want to fit in to a culture of personal freedom and community cooperation.

Dave and Janet,

Head for Buffalo, or about anywhere in Northeast Wyoming to get a job.  Housing is at a premium but you will be able to get job and make decent money pretty durn quick.

Dear Dave and Janet,

Danl's advice is good.  Buffalo, Gillette, Newcastle, Douglas, Sundance, and Hulett might be good places to focus your search.  There are also larger communities like Casper and Cheyenne.

Housing is scarce of late because there's a solid boom in mining and oil.  That seems to me to be a great opportunity for real estate development - buying land, finishing lots, building houses, etc.  Where there is a housing shortage, there is going to be a real estate boom, and that means lots of work for plumbers.  I know that one of the companies I'm involved with is looking to make considerable investments into Wyoming real estate and offer places for RV trailers to hook up, places for people to park trailer homes or rent them, and also site built homes.  Lots of work for plumbers, it seems to me.  I don't think there is any license requirement in Wyoming to practice your trade.

Welcome to Free State Wyoming!  I think you'll be very happy here.

Please consider visiting the jamboree this June.  It's the best way to meet people and get to know folks.  There really is a tremendous community spirit.

Regards,

Jim

My long posts make some think I'm a key figure in FSW.  I'm not. I'm not an officer nor a leader.  I'm just this guy.  I think FSW is a great idea, & defend & promote it as I'm able.   Assuming that anyone agrees w/me is mistaken. Your bad results from your poor assumptions are your responsibility.

Howdy all,

Thanks for the good advice. I guess it's the same decision between affordable housing and good work we have here in VT (rural vs urban/boom).... But at least the folks in WY are a WHOLE lot friendlier! It was a toss up between WY and MT, but WY won b/c the work seems more plentiful and the government less intrusive. A lot of native Vermonters have fled to to North carolina, but that just wasn't for us. NJ is taking over there 2. Remember NY/NJ is busting at the seams with something like 17 million. Thats a lot of people who need to relocate and plant the seed of big intrusive government somewhere. Another nice state was Kentucky, but I called on an "owner financing" deal on a nice little home. it turned out to be a NY'er who bought up forclosures to flip, and then wanted 12% interest!

Planning to move in the next few months.......

Dave

Howdy Dave and Janet, Glad you found us. Here is a quick search of plumbing jobs in Wyoming.

http://www.jobsearch.org/seeker/jobsearch/quick        (EDIT : sorry that didn't work like I thought so, type in plumber in the keyword box and then select the state or location button and select Wyoming, then search now. )

As has been said , Wyoming is still in a boom so lots of jobs. My nephew builds homes in Rock Springs and can't build them fast enough. There are some others here ,on the FSW board, that build homes also so hopefully they will chime in. Have you ever done any "industrial" plumbing, pipefiting etc ? There are several plants being built now and more over the next five years and they will be needing people to help build and then run them, so that is an option.

Take your time here and look around at some of the other threads, several on jobs and realty.
And have Janet jump in with any questions she may have.
Have you guys spent any time in Wyoming ?? If not , plan a trip and come out to look around.? ? ? Miles

Welcome indeed! And, as an X Californian, I very much agree with you about the socialist agenda.

Fortunately, not everyone - even in California - is ready to suck up to the government. Still quite a few there who believe in liberty... just have to get them off the dime and on the road to freedom. I'm working on it. :)

PM if you're interested in visiting me here in Newcastle. I'd love to show you my small town and all the great people here.
