Introduction from new subscriber

Hi All.  I hope I am posting in the right place.  I didn't see any other introductions under this sub-topic but it says it is for newcomers to introduce themselves.  This forum, the whole thing, is a bit hard to figure out.  I am not sure just what is what yet!  I am sure as I continue to browse around things will settle out a bit.

Anyway, I found y'all by way of having read the book Molon Labe!  Before that I had no idea that any of this was in existence.  After reading the book I was so excited at the prospect that just maybe folks were actually doing what the book had proposed, that I hunted around for a "Free State Wyoming" site on Google and found this.

Well, I am a libertarian and I agreed with just about everything that Boston T. Party wrote.  I feel like I'd like to meet James Preston! what a hero.  Now I am not a "gun-nut" like the book talks alot about.  Had to "google" what an A1 is.  But, I was raised as a boy to know how to handle a rifle.  Today, although I do not shoot it, I still keep my grandfather's old .22 long rifle (just in case).  I was a pretty good shot as a kid and still am today.  Of late my youngest son and I go target practice with a new Benjamin pump-up air rifle (.188 caliber).  Found out you can't even shoot one of those in our own backyard here in Spokane.

I absolutely agree with the book's premise that we are not going to get anywhere by running in national elections.  Or doing any of that other stuff, like writing your (fill in the blank) congressman, newspaper editor, etc.  What is needed is a platform on which to build and a plan.[/color]

Now I have a question:  To what extent is this real-life Free State Wyoming movement based upon the tactics and objectives of the book?  Is there like a group of organizers who are directing moves to particular Wyoming counties?

Another question:  Do y'all think there is still time to do a Wyoming takeover?  In the book there wasn't alot of the recent actions taken by the Feds that are really beginning to look police state to me, like the decision by the Fatherland Security Admin. to require airlines check with them before issuing you a ticket.

No, as far as I know nobody is trying to duplicate the story in Molon Labe here in real life Wyoming. It's just a story.

Our main goal is to be good neighbors and live free as possible, promoting liberty and justice for all in our everyday lives and relationships with everyone.

Some of us, as individuals, do participate in various aspects of civic and electoral politics, but it is not as part of the FSW.

You have come to the right discussion forum, certainly.  The people here are "actually doing what the book had proposed" in some measure.  Anyway, many of us are moving to Wyoming.  Some of us were quite taken with Wyoming before the book came out.

It is good to learn you are a libertarian.  Liberty is that pearl of great price.

As there is no "rifleman" notation by my name, I shall not trouble you with my thoughts on rifles.  In his book Unintended Consequences author John Ross goes over some detailed scenarios involving a shooter with .22 hand loads taking on a group of thugs with good results.  If you want Boston's views on low caliber rifles, you should consider a copy of Boston's Gun Bible. 

I was not aware that the laws in Spokane were so backward.  Though, of course, I strongly encourage people to be very aware of their back stop no matter what they are shooting.  Gun ranges are also a good place to meet other decent people who make good neighbors, in my experience.

With regard to getting anywhere by running in national elections, I think that Ron Paul is doing what can be done with that approach.  There's nothing wrong with someone doing it, and the more sincere their views about liberty, the better.  Expecting easy victories in national elections, or even expecting to get the nomination of some major party, would be kidding yourself, of course.  But, as L. Neil Smith has written extensively in his online news 'zine The Libertarian Enterprise, a presidential candidate like Ron Paul who simply stands up for real principles of liberty and does not try to be all things to all people is a good thing.  It won't likely get him in the White House, but it sure has the opportunity to get his message out to a lot of people.

As to writing letters to newspaper editors, I think it is a good thing, and I've done it all my life since about age 12.  I just think you have to pick sensible newspapers.

A plan is a good idea.  More on that below.

The book is just a book.  The organizers of FSW have indicated that the preferred counties initially are Crook, Weston, and Hot Springs.  But, I think if you plan to move to any county in Wyoming you are welcome here, and if you move to a lower population county, you are doing a bit more for the effort.  I would not say that anyone is directing moves, but people are cooperating in helping each other to move.  There has been an enormous amount of information sharing here on how to find help and get things together when you arrive, too.

Is there time to do a Wyoming takeover?  Sure.  Is that the objective of FSW? Not as far as I can see.  The objective of FSW is to bring decent people with the spirit of liberty to Wyoming.  The plan, such as it is, is not to take over Wyoming.  Rather, the plan is to bring people to smaller population counties in Wyoming where they would live near each other and presumably have activities in the county to good effect.

Boston has used the analogy of an ice cube tray.  The counties in a state are like the chambers in the ice cube tray.  Some have more water (population) than others.  I think those freeze slower in the water case - something about surface area to volume ratio.  So, if we put ourselves in the smaller population counties, I think we can have a greater effect.  Since I'm not really convinced that any form of politics is going to change much, I don't think that political action is necessarily going to be how we make a difference.  But, if you think that political action is the way to make a difference, you obviously want as many of your own kind of political thinking in your county, and as few of the boot on our necks party in your county.  So, smaller population counties make sense.

The book was written in 2003 and released in January 2004, I think, based on what Amazon has about it.  So, you'll have to wait for the sequel to see some of the more recent outrages.

As to "is there time"?  I would say, there is, some.  We are evidently in the early stages of a hyperinflationary monetary crisis.  I think we are also very near a peak period in the slave rebellion cycle.  So, bad things are going to start happening much more often, and soon.  It therefore makes sense for you to prepare.

I think preparedness means different things to different people.  It is examined in considerable detail on other threads. I would suggest that where you are physically makes a big difference in whether you survive crazy times.  Just as it is easier to stay warm in the winter months in Southern states, it is easier to stay free in times of tyranny in free places.

Brass is itself an alloy of copper and zinc, so reduced to its constituent elements, that would be lead, copper, and zinc. 

It turns out that there is an alloy of lead, copper, and zinc called "leaded brass."  I did not know it, so thank you for your comment, as it got me thinking.
