Greetings and some questions
« on: March 02, 2008, 11:30:26 AM »
I am new to the FSW idea but it has struck a cord with me.  I moved to Illinois with my wife about a year and a half ago and am getting awfully tired of Chicago politics (even down here in farm country).

To make a long story somewhat shorter - I will likely be moving on within a short time and would like to settle in WY.  I am in somewhat of a unique situation in that I have a job that can be done anywhere with an Internet connection (dial-up isn't practical) but will be on site with one of my clients for several months to a year in Southern Kalifornia.  Since I have no wish to move to their location permanently I'd like to set up residence in what I will consider to be my home long-term.

So - what I'd like to do is find someplace I can call home (a room or small apartment) that is relatively inexpensive and that can tolerate my not being there much for quite some time (several months at least).  Ideally, it would be an area with reasonable land prices (I'd eventually want to build a house and settle full-time), have decent job prospects (preferably IT but I'd be open to a career change).  I'd also like someone to grab any mail that came for me or my business (a small Internet consultancy) and forward it on (a service I'd gladly pay for.)  Basically I'd use the place as a base of operations when I am in town until I can find something more permanent.

Any ideas on a location that fits my longer term goals and a situation that fits my short-term ones?

Thanks!

I should add that having access to a decent sized airport would make it helpful for me to get home to WY easier.

Hi, and welcome!  Thank you for posting.

Please say more about the airports issue.  There are commercial flights into and out of Casper and Cheyenne, I think.  There are also airports in many other communities.  Are you a private pilot?  How big is "decent sized"?  You can find a list here:
  http://www.hotelstravel.com/cgi-bin/airports.cgi?s=Wyoming

There is high speed Internet available in most of the communities in Wyoming, including some from cable providers, some DSL, and some commercial grades like T1.  There's lots of land.  The politics in Wyoming are not at all like those in Chicago.  (One of my brother's lived in Chicago for many years, so I have some idea what you are talking about.)

There are IT jobs.  There are new business opportunities, including in IT.  Feel free to send a private message (look to the links at left of this post) for my e-mail address.  I'd be pleased to see your resume and salary requirements.

Regards,

Jim
My long posts make some think I'm a key figure in FSW.  I'm not. I'm not an officer nor a leader.  I'm just this guy.  I think FSW is a great idea, & defend & promote it as I'm able.   Assuming that anyone agrees w/me is mistaken. Your bad results from your poor assumptions are your responsibility.

Thanks for the reply Jim.

As far as airports go - I just want to be able to get to my destination without too much hassle.  Cheyenne and Casper would probably do.  I currently fly out of Peoria, IL which has about 6 gates and direct flights to Chicago, Detroit, Denver and Las Vegas (and probably a few others.)  It suits my needs and getting through the sec line isn't too much of a hassle.

My main reason for wanting to move to WY is to regain a bit of freedom, tax planning (owning my own business gives me some flexibility here) and to eventually find a nice piece of land (currently live on 16 acres here in IL) where I can go out on the deck, blast through a few mags and not have to worry about annoying the neighbors.  Being able to carry defensive weapons would be nice too (IL has no concealed or open carry - unless you're on the city council in Chicago...)

Will send you a PM as well but wanted to get these clarifications out on the board in case anyone else wanted to comment.

Steve

Howdy Steve ,welcome here.
My brother works on line from a very small town in Wyoming and travels to Denver when he needs to .

Our member BeulahTrash had or has a room available for rent. Beulah is not too far (60 miles) from Rapid City, SD, which my wife uses all the time to fly out. RC has flights to Minneapolis, SLC, UT, LV,NV, and Denver.
Here's the link to the airport:

Just click on the Airlines button to see who flies where.

And welcome to the forum.

Anyone who makes themselves dependent upon aviation under the current petroleum regime risks becoming stranded.
