They invite you, there's a secret initiation, you learn a secret handshake, and voila' you're a Mason.(Thats the short version) If you're a Christian, or a Catholic(last time I checked with a Catholic friend) it is frowned upon, to put it mildly.

Actually, you must express an interest and request a petition (application).

I've just put in a petition at the local lodge here, the A.F.A.M Malta Lodge #17, Thermopolis.
